BlackBerry Enterprise Express Activation app not supported on BB7 devices

It's bitter sweet when a brand new series of BlackBerry and OS launches. Sweet because of the excitement of getting that shiny new device in your hands. Nobody was more excited than the fearless leader of the CrackBerry Nation Kevin. I don't think it could have been clearer in his unboxing video that he more excited than the 6 year old on Christmas morning when he finds that new red bike. For those of you who missed it, go back and watch the video, you can't fake that love for the BlackBerry.

The bitter part though is many of our favorite apps are not supported on the new series of devices. Today was no different when I went to setup my new Bold 9900. OK so my Audible.com app isn't working, the Cineplex Mobile app isn't' supported, nor is Copy2Contact; but Enterprise Activation for BESX isn't supported?!?

*Note: The article doesn't imply that BES isn't supported by BB7, just that the BlackBerry Enterprise Express Activation app in AppWorld isn't supported.*

 

Dear RIM, how am I supposed to activate my new BlackBerry Bold 9900 on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express? Do I have to call my carrier and pay an additional $15 on my data plan for the Service Book to be pushed down? RIM you created this app so we didn't have to do that anymore.

BES support is the bread and butter of the BlackBerry ecosystem, for goodness sakes RIM YOU need to support the devices YOU make.  Please tell me that the guys who work down the hall in the app development department didn't get the memo on that a new series of BlackBerry smartphones were launching?

Revisando el Foro de la web y debido a un problema que me surgió ayer, se me ha ocurrido la idea de dejaros un listado con todas las paginas web del acceso a la configuración BIS de los principales operadores de telefonía móvil que están dando servicio BlackBerry en España.

Y seguro que algunos preguntareis y esto para que es, pues todos los que sois usuarios de BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) debéis entrar en esta web para poder configuraros vuestras cuentas de correo electrónico en el terminal y así poder enviar y recibir e-mails.

Esta misma pagina del operador es la que se accede a través del dispositivo móvil normalmente desde la carpeta configuración (para versiones 4.x,5.x) y desde el icono configuración y después cuentas de correo electrónico para OS 6.

Team BerryReview @ The BBM Hackathon in NYC

We told you earlier that BerryReview was sending three contestants to RIM’s BBM Hackathon event in NYC this week. They arrived yesterday and now we finally have a picture of all of us together. All of the BBM Hackathon contestants received a prerelease BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry Torch 9810 which is really nice. From left to right the picture shows:

All three of them have great ideas for BBM connected apps and RIM has some senior employees there to make sure it happens. I am definitely excited for what is cooking today and tomorrow.

Foursquare Talks About Success of BlackBerry App & BBM Integration

 

Pete Nofelt from Foursquare made an appearance at the BBM Hackathon with some interesting data to share. BlackBerry is a huge part of Foursquare’s success and Pete was backing it up with numbers. Their implementation of the BBM Social Platform has been a HUGE hit and really skyrocketed their user engagement along with bringing a record number of users. Here is some of the data Pete shared:

Pete had a couple of tips for developers. Mainly don’t be spammy and respect a users trust they gave you when installing the app. He said that BBM helped users share data outside Foursquare and lets you share data outside your graph. He also said that developers should change the package name to avoid conflicts if you use RIM’s plugin. He mentioned that the RIM provided code degrades gracefully so it wont throw exceptions if a user is using a non BBM6 supported OS or does not have BBM6 and installs your BBM powered app. Last but not least he recommended throwing in extras like a nice bright color scheme and start up screen which users appreciate from Foursquare.

RIM Talks BlackBerry Messenger Growth Numbers

Every so often RIM shares with us how BlackBerry Messenger is doing. At the BBM Hackathon at NYC Tyler Lessard, VP of BlackBerry Alliances & Developer Relations, share the latest numbers. They are pretty impressive and I think it is the first time RIM has shared how many BBM groups there are.

Why Social & BBM SDK is So Important to RIM – Wordmole Getting BBM Treatment

  

At the Hackathon Tyler Lessard and the head of the BBM SDK initiative (didn’t catch his name) talked about why BBM is so important and why this BBM Social Platform is exciting for RIM. Tyler bases his reasoning on Ray Kurzweil and his “Law of Accelerating Returns” which boils down to proving exponential instead of linear growth in technology. He talks about how companies are now building on today’s technology. That means they are building their apps assuming things that never existed just a few years ago. For example, the big push into the cloud means operating systems are now assuming that the cloud exists and building on top of it. Its the same thing for Social, NFC, connected Gaming, etc.

RIM found that apps that were socially connected were 8 times more sticky than their non connected versions and bring higher levels of engagement. All in all that means they are opening a huge new social graph to developers that is only available for BlackBerry developers. That is why I am really looking forward to RIM’s first BBM Hackathon. RIM let us know that they plan on doing many more Hackathons with possible other locations in North America and around the world. They have done some in Asia and Europe in the past but those were mostly a sponsorship of another companies Hackathon. They are counting on these 30 Hackathon contestants to tell them what they are doing right or wrong and provide feedback directly to the managers and developers involved in the BBM SDK and the BlackBerry dev platform in general. Anybody noticing a paradigm shift in how RIM is reaching out to developers?

On a side note the slides RIM was using to show off the BBM SDK and its features all showed off screenshots of Wordmole with the BBM SDK features built in. That includes chat and a few other features. I did not have a chance to check the BlackBerry 7 devices to see if they have this new version. Check the screenshots below to see what I mean:
