Review: Allergen Free Cooking for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Allergen Free Cooking

It’s funny, there’s one thing that sticks with me when I think back to the finalists for the BlackBerry Super Fanboy contest. Besides the creativity, I think about the content; applications to be more specific. How fitting that the winners also included developers. We’ve heard about Marco van Hylckama Vlieg’s ever useful Screamager application, which was out and about at DevCon 2011, and also came in handy during our Halloween Trick or Treat trek. There’s another one that was shown off in a fanboy video that isn’t quite as well known, but is definitely awesome. Another Fanboy contest winner, Alexander Perri, could be seen cooking with his PlayBook next to him- check out his My Everlasting Light video at the 3 min, 45 sec mark to see the app in question. That application is actually his own creation; it’s called Allergen Free Cooking.

When his video was posted in the blogs, I immediately reached out to him, wanting to know which app it was. At DevCon, I finally met up with Alexander and we discussed the application, its creation and its future. Since day one, it hasn’t left my BlackBerry PlayBook, though it does cause me to salivate which in turn creates the danger of potentially causing water damage to my tablet. Read on for more.

Allergen Free Cooking was developed by Alexander Perri under AP Photography and by CR6 Technologies. It’s currently only for the BlackBerry PlayBook, though there are plans to bring to OS 7 BlackBerry smartphones. The application is currently in version 1.0 and has a file size of 32.6 MB.

Cost: $1.99

Rating in BlackBerry App World: Not Yet Rated

Allergen Free Cooking Main Menu

In a nutshell, Allergen Free Cooking is a recipe book that caters towards those with intolerances, or allergies towards dairy, egg, gluten or soy by currently providing 19 delicious recipes. According to the about screen, these appear to be provided by stylist and Chef Biance Drennan. There are two ways of accessing the recipes; view all or view by type. You can do either from the main menu, where types are divided into Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Dessert.

Allergen Free Cooking recipe list

Below these categories, the navigation menu can be found, which is stationary no matter which screen you are viewing. In this menu, there is a link to the master list of recipes, as well. In either view, each entry includes a thumbnail of the delectable dish. Let’s take a look at one now.

Allergen Free Cooking recipe card

The design and layout of the application is wonderful, it showcases Alexander’s photographer skills quite well. This includes the look of each “recipe card”. Each recipe card includes items such as a description of the dish, storage options, substitutions, information on specific ingredients, serving size and difficulty. The recipe card also lists the ingredients, measurements and directions. The description, ingredients and direction fields may include more information than it can display. You are able to scroll up and down within those fields. That allows for maximum information and minimum use of the screens real-estate. What’s done with the rest of the screen? How about 4 beautiful images capturing the dish from start to finish? My stomach is growling as I write this while looking at the app. Excuse me while I go get a snack…

Allergen Free Cooking grocery list

Of course you need to keep track of the ingredients needs for these recipes. Conveniently, Allergen Free Cooking has a section where you can manage your grocery list. Rather than one massive list to run through, your items are divided into four categories;

Fruits, Vegetables & Herbs

Spices, Seeds & Grains

Meat, Fish & Milk

Baking, Honey, Syrup & Condiments

The ingredients are preset with no option to modify them in any way. Wait, no you can choose the quantity of each item you want to pick up. Each entry has a quantity tracker to the right, allowing you to easily mark off of many of each you need. To the left of each entry, a check mark is displayed. As you drop items into your shopping cart, click on the checkmarks to track what’s left to pick up. It’s simple, to the point and easy to use while pushing a cart or juggling a basket. The only thing I can think of is combining recipe cards with the grocery list. Include a button that will automatically add the ingredients from a recipe card into the grocery list. Streamlining this process will make the app go far.

Allergen Free Cooking gallery

Otherwise known as the drool den, the gallery displays larger image of all 19 dishes. Scroll through, wipe your mouth and decide which one you want to make next. What you make this section more useful is being able to tap on an image and be redirected to the associated recipe card.

Besides the couple of additions I mentioned earlier, this application is amazing. Each of the features is powerful on their own (photography, layout, recipes and grocery list), but Allergen Free Cooking combines them into one beautiful package. Alexander is looking for more recipes to add to future versions, so if you do decide to pick this up, let him know of your ideas. You can pick up Allergen Free Cooking for $1.99 from BlackBerry App World.

BlackBerry Fanboy Video Contest Finalist #5: Inceptionally Fast

Ok CrackBerry Nation, here it is. Our fifth and final finalist video in CrackBerry's BlackBerry Super Fanboy contest. Following up our first, second, third and fourth finalist entries (which were all AWESOME), this one is titled Inceptionally Fast and comes to us from Shahriyar Ali, who lives in India. BlackBerry is taking off in India and this proves there are BlackBerry Super Fans there... it's awesome to see an entry submitted far from CrackBerry HQ.

Inceptionally Fast is pretty darn clever. Inspired by the movie Inception, the story explains the BlackBerry infrastructure showing how fast and secured data is transferred from beginning to end. Action packed and awesome, it's yet another amazing entry in this contest. Watch it above and sound off in the comments!

That's it for our finalist videos. Getting down to the final five wasn't easy - we had some other great entries submitted which we'll make live shortly on CrackBerry's Youtube Channel for your viewing pleasure (we'll follow up with some shout outs). I'll be following up later today with a post showing off the five finalists in one post... we'll want you to post in the comments with your favorites... and from there I've assembled a new judging panel that's going to spend the night trying to sort out who the ultimate winner will be. It's not going to be easy.

BlackBerry Super Fanboy Contest Finalists Roundup!

Super Fanboy Contest

OK CrackBerry Nation, over the last two days we've posted our FIVE Finalist Videos in CrackBerry's BlackBerry Super Fanboy contest. The videos have been AWESOME and you can find all of them below. If you haven't watched them yet, I suggest taking 20 minutes to watch them all now. You won't be disappointed.

It was hard deciding upon five finalists from all the entries submitted (you can see them all on our youtube channel) to begin with, and now things are going to get EVEN more difficult as our judging panel deliberates on who the grand prize winner will be. For your chance to influence the judges on who you want to see win, be sure to watch all the videos and respond in the comments with your rank order favorites and reasoning. We plan to announce the winner tomorrow (Friday) here on the blogs, so hurry and get watching!

Huge props go again to everybody who participated. And to those who didn't make the final round, watch your email as we'll be following up with a nice consolation prize. And to the five finalists... I hope you get some sleep tonight... tomorrow is a big day! Good luck!

Our first finalist video in CrackBerry's BlackBerry Super Fanboy contest comes via Marco van Hylckama Vlieg, who put together an AWESOME BlackBerry rap video. I don't want to give too much away in the teaser here, so hit play on the video above and take it all in. It's totally hardcore BlackBerry Super Fanboy. Which also means I'll slap on a little warning for explicit lyrics. :)

Our second finalist in CrackBerry's BlackBerry Super Fanboy contest comes to us via CrackBerry member Deathcommand. Deathcommand is well known on the CrackBerry forums, having racked up almost 4,000 forum posts to date (win or lose, he's a BB super fan in my book!).

Following the first and second of our top five CrackBerry Super Fanboy contest finalist videos (which we're posting in no particular order), our third finalist video comes from Julien who lives in Los Angeles. A BlackBerry user for over seven years, Julien says he takes his BlackBerry with him just about everywhere he goes.

Ok, so we're one, two, three finalist videos down in our BlackBerry Super Fanboy contest and it's time for our fourth to get unveiled here on the CrackBerry blogs. This video comes to us via Alexander Perri of Toronto, Canada and he's called it BlackBerry, My Everlasting Light (aptly name for the Black Keys song which the video is set to).

BlackBerry Fanboy Video Contest Finalist #4: BlackBerry, My Everlasting Light

Ok, so we're one, two, three finalist videos down in our BlackBerry Super Fanboy contest and it's time for our fourth to get unveiled here on the CrackBerry blogs. This video comes to us via Alexander Perri of Toronto, Canada and he's called it BlackBerry, My Everlasting Light (aptly name for the Black Keys song which the video is set to).

As you can read in the full video details provided below, Alexander was trying to come up with crazy ideas to show off how much he loved BlackBerry, but decided that just didn't make sense and instead went for an approach that was literally all him. The video above walks through a day in Alexander's life, which is definitely a day in the life of a BlackBerry addict. I think a lot of the hardcore CrackBerry readers will see a bit of themselves staring back in this one. It's a well put together video. Definitely a BlackBerry Fanboy, that's for sure. Great stuff!

The video was filmed in Toronto, ON at my house as well as my girlfriend's house. I am the only person in the video and I operated the camera for most of the shots (my girlfriend Tania helped with a couple of scenes). It was filmed on my Nikon D7000 DSLR with a wide angle 24mm for the more zoomed out shots and with a 50mm for the close ups. It was filmed and exported in 1080p. When thinking of ideas to include in my video, I was trying to think of the craziest thing possible. After going through some ideas, I realized they just didn't make sense. After a long while of thinking, I realized I'm not going to try to fabricate some crazy video, but use my daily life as inspiration. I realized I use my BlackBerry a lot. Actually, between my phone and my PlayBook, I'm using it all day long. I feel a sense of panic if I don't have my BlackBerry in my pocket, on the table in front of me or by my side. I am constantly holding my BlackBerry, always checking emails or my social feeds. I am downright addicted to my BlackBerry. This made me come to the conclusion that I was going to film what a typical day in the life of a BlackBerry addict is like.

I am a photographer, graphic designer and as of last year, I'm a BlackBerry application developer (I have developed 3 apps for the PlayBook under AP Photography and 1 more is in the finalization stage), but in my free time I find myself either checking out CrackBerry, development tutorials and news or playing around in Flash Builder to find new and better features to add to my current projects. Because of this, I focused on me being a developer in the video, and what my day is like when I'm developing apps. I literally use my BlackBerry for everything. I use it as my alarm, to get the news and weather, to play games while I'm bored (yes, even in the bathroom), to check and send emails, make phone calls, watch videos and play music, as my e-reader, and so much more. I was only able to capture a few of the many uses I have for my BlackBerry because I didn't want the video to drag on. Basically, I use them for everything and I always have them on me (much to the disapproval of my mom and girlfriend). I also always have to have the latest and greatest BlackBerry. As you can see in the video, I have a BlackBerry Torch box, PlayBook box and Bold 9900 box on my desk. I bought an unlocked Torch 2 weeks before it was released in Canada, I got my PlayBook from RIM for developing an application (I would've bought one on day one if I hadn't) and I got the Bold 9900 on day one for app testing, but obviously use it as my everyday phone. I simply love BlackBerry!

BlackBerry Fanboy Video Contest Finalist #2: BlackBerry Adrenaline!

His video entry is titled BlackBerry Adrenaline... and well.. let's just say as I did with our first finalist video, I'll keep the teaser here short so you can watch and be surprised and entertained for yourself. But it's definitely got a bit of everything, action, humor and everything in between. When you're done watching the video above, you can keep reading below for more on deathcommand and his BlackBerry Adrenaline video. CrAzY awesome stuff!

Hello. My name is Hans Lee. I am 17 years old and am known as Deathcommand on the forums. I am currently in highschool and attending Georgia Perimeter College. Yeah. One of those million campuses.

I got the 8330m on sprint in 2009 of September, and after a few days of learning I finally found out how I could use it. Most of the learning was from my Youth Pastor at church but soon I began to love it even more.

As I found out, my 8330m would never get BlackBerry 5.0. I was devastated. But I filled in the gap by falling in love with CrackBerry.com. I remember when the 9650 rumored with 256mb's of RAM, when it was labeled as a Tour when the Tour was changed only to have WiFi and a trackpad as added features.

I remember the release. I read up Kevin's article at least 3 times that day and many more after that. I remembered that in my head, RIM just released the best phone created.

Fast forward to September 2010, I asked my dad if I could get the 9650. He saw the $200 price tag and said no. He told me to get a phone that has 4G and a bigger screen. He even offered to pay for the Epic 4G if I agreed to use it. I said I wanted the 9650 for its keyboard and after a good hour of begging him and pestering him, I was grounded for my persistence and for declining his offer.

1 Month later I asked again. Same result.

1 Month later. I asked again. He finally agreed. Now it is the same with the 9930. Except he now wants me to get the Galaxy S2.

My video is called "BlackBerry Adrenaline" as I try my best to make this as much into an action genre as possible.

It also features Mystery, Comedy, Tragedy, and Horror.

What you see in the film is not me being reckless (well it kind of is). I understand what I am doing and I do practice. The type of running is Parkour. I chose to add this because I don't feel the videos on what people did for the What Would You Do for a BlackBerry Storm? contest were quite... amazing enough. For example, the tattoo for many is very un-risky. If there is any problem, they can get money back or just have them fix it. Shot with paint balls? It's merely pain. Bruises go away within a few days. How about embarrassing yourself at Time Square? Why do we want others to think this is what BB Addicts do?

Mine is a bit different.

A BlackBerry user can do what? They aren't afraid? That is what I think is awesome.

For explanation, the video begins with a happy intro, which has a very small bit of mystery, which turns to action, and then turns to comedy, then back to action, then to terror and drama.

I hope you enjoy the video. May the best video win.

Acting, Hans Lee and Abraham Lee.

Extra Info: Filmed By Abraham Lee, Ellen Lee, Joseph Nam and Hans Lee

Also. There is a magical purple line at the first scene. I don't know where it came from and it gives nothing to the video so don't try to analyze it at all. It is a hardware issue.

** Quick Note: For anyone interested in learning Parkour. Do not attempt to pick up at the level that I displayed. It is not a sport that is simply seen and repeated. I have been training for over 8 years (since I was in 3rd grade). You can contact me on the forums if you want to learn but even I am not the best teacher. Youtube has been my teacher.

Typed on my 9650

BlackBerry Super Fanboy Contest Finalist Videos on the way... stay tuned!

Super Fanboy Contest

The entry deadline for our BlackBerry Super Fanboy contest came to pass at noon yesterday, and our judging panel stayed up LATE last night watching all of the video entries and arguing back and forth over which should qualify as finalists. Overall we were really excited with the videos submitted - there are definitely a lot of BlackBerry Super Fans out there!

We've now narrowed it down to our five finalists, and today and tomorrow will be running each of those videos here on the CrackBerry blogs in a dedicated post. Be sure to watch them as they air and leave your feedback. Once all of the finalist videos have run on the blogs we have a new set of judges who will step in to decide on the winner.

Big thanks to EVERYONE who submitted a video entry. Stay tuned... the Super Fanboy contest finalist videos are coming right up!

BlackBerry Fanboy Video Contest Finalist #1: BlackBerry for Life rap - Go Hard for the Brand I Love!

Once you're done watching, keep reading for the back story on this video entry as well as the full lyrics to the song. Bonus points go to Marco for developing his own BlackBerry PlayBook app too. On a day where Apple is doing their new iPhone announcement, I think it's totally good timing that we're posting this up on CrackBerry today... time to go hard for the brand I love!

This thing has been a long time in the making. I pretty much started immediately after the contest was announced. First I spent several evenings writing lyrics. This was harder than I thought it was gonna be because the words have to flow exactly right. Next up was recording the song. Rapping isn't really one of my core talents so this was even harder. Probably the hardest part of preparing this entry. The song was recorded over several evenings ending up in a humongous GarageBand project file. Everything in the soundtrack is me. The megaphone yelling, the backing vocals, all me. In the meanwhile I found some violent destruction footage on the net to spice things up a bit. And of course the various CEO pics etc.

I wanted a BlackBerry baseball cap but... I didn't have one! I have no idea if they even exist but I had to have one. So... I made one myself. My wife found me a plain black cap and I bought some white felt, cut out pieces to form a BlackBerry logo and glued them on. It came out pretty nice I think! She also got me the fake gold chain which I used to create the 'wearable PlayBook' together with the case and some tape.

I managed to find a cool 'ghetto scene' photo which I manipulated to have 'Blackberry for Life' grafitti artwork in Photoshop. I also prepared the 'Blackberry for life' tattoo-reveal piece in the meanwhile. I'm still learning After Effects so this was pretty cool to try. Then came the shooting. I was starting to run out of time and I hadn't really practiced a lot so this was quite the challenge. The blue screen setup (in my living room) wasn't really ideal so it doesn't look quite perfect. My lipsyncing cold be better as well but there was not enough time to practive.

Then I prepared the scenes in After Effects, going for the 'gritty black and white' look from the original DJ Khaled video. Like I said before, the blue screen setup was a bit crap so it doesn't look perfect.

Finally I mashed everything together in Adobe Premiere and there it was, my Super Fanboy Contest entry. I don't think I've ever spend this much time on a video so I really hope you'll like it!

For those who wonder what the cool Crackberry Logo scroller is: It's my own PlayBook app 'Screamager'. It comes with this animation.

Since some bits may be a bit hard to understand thanks to my stupid Dutch accent I'm also including the lyrics.

I think it's time for me to go hard for the brand I love

I think it's time for me to go hard for the brand I love

I think it's time for me to go hard for the brand I love

I think it's time for me to go hard for the brand I love

This is for Waterloo! Crackberry told me I could

We had some wins some losses

Just a life of a Blackberry boss's

With the case off tapping on the keys like a mother fucking messaging boss

this is dope as it gets

fly as fiftyseven passengers

This Bold be another classic bitch

everybody knows I got it if you want it then get at it

but You ain't gonna have

no You ain't gonna have it

If you could you would get rid of me

what you gonna do when a fan gotta go hard

but I won't let you get to me

you should already know I'm gonna go hard

If you were as real as me

You would never let an iPhone in yo yard

Fart apps ain't shit to me

this is in my veins and it gets to my heart

so I am, I will I gots to say

There ain't no other brand than Blackberry

I am BBMing it in until the end I got to go, go, go hard

Let me be heard

I hate robots and fruity turds

WebOS was cool and all

Till Leo the clown dropped the ball

Windows Phone, seriously?

Don't give a damn if you can't see

Man I don't care what you think is best

My gear's the the best so fuck the rest

Blackberry owns, RIM's the best

Better take note it's me who said

Don't care what others think they see

Apple hipsters got nothing on me

Don't even talk Wind-ows or Droids now

Stead of RIM they gon go down

Maybe I would have slowed down if I knew what I know now

QNX in the house gonna kick some ass

Soon you're gonna be the one who will be sassed

TAT's gonna get it on

We got what it takes to be number one

I guess it's gon be what it's gon be

But there's one thing you gotta hear

Gonna tell you like Crackberry told me

Fuck y'all hippies I'm out of here

If you could you would get rid of me

what you gonna do when a fan gotta go hard

but I won't let you get to me

you should already figure imma go hard

If you were as real as me

You would never let an iPhone step in yo yard

runnin' fart apps ain't shit to me

this is in my veins and it gets to my heart

so I am, I will I gots to say

There ain't no other brand than Blackberry

I am BBMing it in until the end I got to go, go, go hard

I'm goin in, I'm goin in!!!

I go hard for the Bold

I go hard for the Torch

I go hard for the Playbook
