Google abandona el desarrollo de la aplicación de Gmail para BlackBerry

Parece que esto en algunos medios ha caído como una mala noticia para BlackBerry, pero a mi entender es algo que no tiene repercusión alguna para los usuarios de BlackBerry, más bien es algo bueno y todo. Os estaréis preguntando porque digo que es bueno el hecho de que Google ya no de soporte a la aplicación de Gmail para BlackBerry, vamos por puntos:

1º Google ha dicho que abandona la aplicación nativa de Gmail para dispositivos BlackBerry, pero esto no quiere decir que no podamos simplemente añadir una cuenta de Gmail y recibir sus correos simplemente añadiendo la misma en nuestra cuenta de BIS.

2º La forma más sencilla y natural de tener integrada una cuenta de Gmail en nuestro dispositivo BlackBerry es tenerla configurada vía BIS, con ello se aprovecha al máximo la tecnología Push de BlackBerry

3º Tenemos la sincronización inalámbrica de Calendario, Contactos y elementos eliminados. Dicha sincronización inalámbrica el usuario de BlackBerry la puede activar y desactivar a su conveniencia y de forma separada cada una de esas opciones.

3º Si disponemos de un dispositivo BlackBerry con sistema operativo 5.0 o superior tendremos también la opción de Aplicar etiquetas, Agregar estrellas, Marcar como correo no deseado y añadir Indicadores de seguimiento.

4º Si buscamos correo mediante una búsqueda avanzada podemos seleccionar el Buscar mensajes De forma remota con lo que tenemos todo el correo de nuestra cuenta de Gmail disponible en nuestro dispositivo.

5º Lo malo de tener las aplicación de Gmail era que la misma se ejecuta en segundo plano y comprueba si hay correo nuevo cada 20 minutos, hecho que lo que hace es dar la responsabilidad de comprobar si hay nuevo correo al dispositivo con el correspondiente impacto sobre la duración de la batería en el dispositivo. Vaya que no utiliza y aprovecha en modo alguno las ventajas de la tecnología Push de BlackBerry y con ella al tener integrada una cuenta vía BIS se recibe el correo al momento, sin esperas de esos 20 minutos.

Vaya que no hay cosa que no se pueda hacer sin la aplicación de Gmail simplemente integrando la cuenta con BIS y con ello obtenemos las ventajas antes descritas de utilización de tecnología Push.

Si todo y eso queréis instalar o continuar teniendo la aplicación de Gmail instalada lo podréis hacer con el link oficial de Google hasta el próximo 22 de noviembre, fecha que ha decidido Google para no ofrecer la misma ya oficialmente.

Por cierto comentar que también siempre tendremos la opción de acceder a nuestra cuenta de Gmail vía el Navegador o Browser que está optimizado para su visualización mediante dispositivo móvil.

NewsPile Google Reader PlayBook App Gets Social With v1.0.6

I have been digging NewsPile on my PlayBook and it just got a nice update. Dennis let us know that v1.0.6 of NewsPile brings the most requested feature. It offers integration of sharing and bookmarking services! With this update you can share the articles you love on the following platforms: Delicious, Evernote, Facebook, Google+, Instapaper, Read it Later and, of course, Twitter. This update has also improved the user interface a bit with the left navigation pane growing a bit to make it more usable.

BlackBerry 7 Devices Now Get YouTube Mobile HTML5 Website

YouTube’s website on BlackBerry devices has been pretty pitiful since it first launched. Google has slowly been updating their mobile sites but iPhone and Android versions have always come first. It seems like Google techs are starting to pick up BlackBerry 7 devices because more of their properties are now showing higher end mobile experiences for newer BlackBerrys.

The latest is YouTube getting an HTML5 mobile version for BlackBerry 7 devices spotted by Bla1ze @CrackBerry. Nothing crazy new but hopefully Picasa will also get an overhaul. You can check out the new YouTube HTML5 experience at www.youtube.com from your BlackBerry 7 device.

Google Apps Connector for BES v4.0 Released

I am not sure how many companies are using the Google Apps Connector for BlackBerry Enterprise Server but it just got an update this month. MiBlackBerry spotted the news on Google’s website along with a change log. It really just adds support for the latest version of BES along with:

Here is a breakdown of the features:

Support for BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 5.0.3

Release 4.0 of the Google Apps Connect includes support for BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 5.0.3. BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 5.0.2 is still supported as well.

Read-Receipt functionality

When the BlackBerry device gets a message that requests a read receipt, the device will prompt whether to send a read receipt, and whether to remember this setting. This feature is disabled by default. To enable this feature, set the following registry key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Apps Sync] "ReadReceiptEnabled"=dword:00000001
This setting will take effect the next time you restart the Dispatcher and agents. If a user previously had set a BlackBerry device to deliver a read receipt by default, when you enable this feature the BlackBerry device will deliver a read receipt without prompting the user.

Free-Busy

When scheduling a meeting on the BlackBerry device, users can view free/busy information for other meeting attendees. This information may be cached up to 15 minutes. This feature is disabled by default. To enable this feature, set the following registry key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Apps Sync] "FreeBusyEnabled"=dword:00000001
This setting will take effect the next time you restart the Dispatcher and agents. If this feature is enabled, free/busy will be visible for all users who share their free/busy settings with the Google Apps Connector user, whether or not those users share their free/busy with an individual user. As a result, users may see free/busy schedules in BlackBerry that they would not have permission to see in the Google Apps web browser, and vice versa.

Web Reader – Slick Google Reader Client for the BlackBerry PlayBook

I am always on the hunt for a better Google Reader experience on both my BlackBerry smartphone and PlayBook. The latest I have found is Web Reader for the BlackBerry PlayBook and I have to say I am impressed. It does cost $4.99 which puts it in stiff competition with the capable and free GeeReader app. Still Web Reader does hold its own with some pretty cool features that simply look good.

You can check out more about Web reader on their website or pick it up for $4.99 in App World. They also have a blog post up about their aggressive memory management that should make the app run smoothly.

Change Default Search to Bing in BlackBerry 7 Browser on Verizon & Other Carriers

 

We told you earlier this week that the BlackBerry 7 browser now allows you to add custom search engines and change the default search engine. What we couldn’t tell you back then is that this lets you bypass the Verizon and other carriers default setting of Bing as the default browser search option and set to to whatever you want like Google or even BerryReview. This is surprisingly easy in BlackBerry OS 7. All you need to do is follow these steps:

1. Open the web browser
2. Hit the menu button and select options
3. Click on Manage Search Engines
4. Hit the menu button and select New
5. Enter in the name (Google) and for the address copy and paste one of the following:
1. To search Google Mobile Search use: http://www.google.com/m/search?q=%s
2. To search BerryReview articles use: http://www.berryreview.com/index.php?s=%s
3. To search BerryReview Forum posts use: http://www.berryreview.com/forums/search.php?q=%s
   NOTE: The way this works is you simply copy the URL from a search you would normally use and notice where the URL has your search term.
6. You can then click on any of the available search engines to change your default search provider!

BlackBerry IM Clients v2.5.88 Leaked for OS 6.0 Devices

 

The fun continues with marginally updated versions of the BlackBerry IM clients. The latest were extracted by rr_yy and bring us up to v2.5.88 for those of us with OS 6.0 devices. Nobody is really noticing anything crazy different in these builds but it may be worth a shot if you absolutely have to have the latest version. Keep in mind they might also simply FUBAR your device so don’t say you were not warned!

BlackBerry 6 Browser Search Bar Now Goes to Google Mobile Site!

Finally! Its amazing how the small things make such a big difference. Since RIM introduced the Google search bar in BlackBerry OS 5.0 (I think) it has always directed searches to the Google desktop site. For the last few days I have noticed it is finally going to the new Google Search page they just released for BlackBerry OS 6.0+ devices with WebKit browsers.

I cannot confirm if this is the case for those of you with devices earlier than OS 6.0 but if so let us know in the comments. Thanks Shaun for reminding me about the change. Both of us are not sure what finally changed and if it was on Google or RIM’s part. Either way I am MUCH happier now…

Google Improves Search on BlackBerry OS 6.0 Devices!

FINALLY. I have been waiting for Google to finally get their act together and realize that BlackBerry OS 6 has a WebKit browser just like Android and iPhone. They just announced on their blog that they have revamped Google search and a couple of related properties for the BlackBerry OS 6 browser. The new interface is really slick and really enhances the experience. The only real problem is that RIM still seems to be sending us to the desktop search page from the browser search bar… Still I love the new autocomplete feature.

Here are the new features:

According to Google “These features and more are available on most RIM OS 6.0+ devices with WebKit browsers like the BlackBerry Torch and BlackBerry Bold 9780, and can be accessed in 20 languages across 70 countries.”

To check it out simply go to www.google.com from your BlackBerry with OS 6.0. You may need to clear your cache to get it to work.

Google Ad “Confirms” Verizon Wireless Launching The BlackBerry Bold Touch 9930

Verizon has been super quiet about their upcoming BlackBerry smartphones but John, a reader and fan of BBRocks.com, let me know they may have slipped up with a Google ad. If you go to Google and search for “bold touch 9930″ the ad at the top should be for a “Bold Touchscreen” which everyone by now knows can only be one device, in this case, the BlackBerry Bold “Touch” 9930. When RIM first announced the Bold 9900 series they didn’t specifically mention which carriers would offer it but it looks like Google isn’t good at keeping secrets, which is nothing new.

Clicking on the ad takes you to a page that says “The selection you made is unavailable at this time” but it does take you to the official Verizon site which can only tell us one thing…they’re getting ready. When they’ll actually launch the Bold 9930 is still not known but RIM said it’s “expected to be available from carriers around the world beginning this summer” and since summer is already upon is, it’s definitely around the corner.

Anyone on Verizon (or any other carrier) excited for the Bold 9900 series?

Easy BlackBerry Browser Bookmarklets – Create QR Codes or Search BerryReview & More!

For those of you who don’t know what a bookmarklet is here is a brief description. A bookmarklet is a small bit of JavaScript code stored in the URL of a bookmark in your browser that is designed to add functionality by clicking on it. I was thinking about this concept when I was at BlackBerry World and found it actually works in the new BlackBerry WebKit browser. While I would rather have more robust Browser addons like I mentioned yesterday this has spurred my interest for now.

Here are some of the bookmarklets I created so far with more to come soon. You simply hit the BlackBerry menu button while hovering on top of the link below and select “Add Links to Bookmarks.”

• Search BerryReview Popup Bookmarklet
• Search Google Mobile Popup Bookmarklet (instead of searching Google Desktop search like the browser does)
• Create a QR Code for the website address you are currently looking at using SnapMyInfo

There are limitations though that annoy me like not being able to save a bookmarklet to the homescreen but I plan on creating many more. The possibilities are endless from a “Subscribe in Google Reader” bookmarklet to a “highlight specific text or searching Wikipedia inline.
