Interim PlayBook OS Update Coming Soon With Fixes

One of RIM’s Project Managers, John, let drop in the Beta Zone that a new PlayBook OS update is coming soon. This is an interm update that includes bug fixes and improvements without any new features. It is intended to fix some issues before the main 2.0 update in February. Mauricio @BBRocks noticed the thread on the beta zone which you can check out here but this summary below:

I just wanted to let you know that we’re working on an interim Tablet OS software update to precede the 2.0 release in February. It won’t have any new features (we’re still perfecting those!), but a good percentage of the content came from this community.

Here is a list of some of the included changes (should make some of you happy):

- Daylight Savings Time: updated some time zones
- Updated Bluetooth and Wi-Fi drivers improving co-existence and connectivity
- BlackBerry App World account payments reliability improvements
- Improvements to VPN connection reliability
- Addressed some scenarios where BlackBerry Desktop Software would not restore applications to the PlayBook

You’ll see this update within a few weeks. I know some of you wanted more in the interim, but the focus is going into making things solid for 2.0. For what impact this community did have on this update, I thank you!

I can update this thread when it becomes available.  In the mean time, feel free to share your thoughts!

He said “within a few weeks,” so expect the update in late January. Not impressed.

Are there really NO new features ready to be implemented? Faithful PlayBook owners have been waiting for native email since release 7 months ago. Now we get an update with time zones and wi-fi drivers?

Disappointed to say the least.

Reliance Releases OS 7.0.0.464 for the BlackBerry Curve 9350

Reliance has released 7.0.0.464 for the 9350.  No news on what has changed but you can download it from the Reliance BlackBerry Software page.

Updated: BlackBerry PlayBook OS v2.0.0.3894 Developer Beta Available – App World Removed!

Update: RIM let us know that their note in their blog post this morning that said App World not being included in this version of the PlayBook OS 2.0 developer build ”was a typo that has since been removed.”  Hopefully that means RIM is not even considering it anymore. Now I can finally download the update and check for myself.

RIM has rolled out an update to the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 Developer Beta bringing it to v2.0.0.3894. This is not the regular consumer build and to ensure that RIM has taken the DRASTIC measure of removing App World from the developer build in this update. That means you can only sideload applications for testing. The problem is that RIM has essentially turned the developer build from something you could more or less still use regularly and test on to a device that is for development only. There is a reason other OS development builds of upcoming OS releases like Windows, iOS, etc DO NOT DO THIS! It pisses developers off!

Wind silently drops OS7.0.0.439 for the 9810

Wind has released OS 7.0.0.439 right under our noses.  No news on what the changes are, but I am installing it right now, and will list any noticable changes.  You can download it directly from the Wind BlackBerry Software site.

For those of you who like to stick to the official carrier release OS updates Verizon released OS 7.0.0.374 for the Bold 99930. This is an official OS but a backup is always recommended incase something goes wrong with your update.  Contrary to the usual no change log with this one you get quite a change log.

Developers Register your PlayBook For OS 2.0 Beta Access

RIM did not deliver the live update we were hopping for OS 2.0 but if you are a developer you can register your BlackBerry PlayBook for early access to the OS and test your Apps. Note that this will not include native PIM apps that we were all hopping for.  To register follow this link and input the information, it may take minutes to 24 hours to receive the update pushed to your device.

RIM Notes: There is 24 hour window for devs to install the update if not they will need to register again.

The PlayBook OS 2.0 is available today as a developer beta

To install the 2.0 Beta on your PlayBook, you must register your PIN below and install the update within 24 hours. This version of software contains support for developers to test their applications against the following runtimes:

• Runtime for Android apps
• Adobe AIR 3.0
• WebWorks
• Coming soon: NDK 2.0

This version of OS 2.0 does not contain end user features such as: email, calendar contacts, video store, etc.

Possible BlackBerry BBX (QNX OS) Name Confirmed in QNX Auto Summit Japan Slide?

Rumors have been floating around for a bit now about what RIM will call their future QNX based OS when it migrates off the PlayBook and onto phones. It obviously cannot be called the BlackBerry Tablet OS anymore and CrackBerry posited that it would be called BBX merging BB with QNX. Now Kevin scored a slide from the QNX Auto Summit Japan presentation that seems to be pointing to the BBX name again.

My Japanese is nonexistent but you can clearly see it shows support for BBX, iOS, and Android. Let us know if you can figure out what it says!

BlackBerry PlayBook OS v1.07.3312 Fixes Adobe Flash Vulnerability

RIM has pushed out an update to the BlackBerry PlayBook OS bringing it to OS v1.07.3312. This version is now available and addresses a vulnerability that Adobe announced in Flash on September 21st that could potentially cause issues for devices that support Flash though no exploits are currently documented. Users running OS v1.0.7.2942 will get an update that will only include this Adobe Flash update and should take only a few minutes to install. This is because of the piecemeal updates RIM allowed for in the last update which should make subsequent updates much easier.

So what are you waiting for? Hit that “check for updates” button now!
