Free BeepUs App Makes Push to Talk BBM a Reality

I have always hoped that RIM would add Push to Talk or other voice calling features into BBM. So far RIM has just made it a little simpler to send voice notes but nothing near a full push to talk with presence solution. That has not stopped Tuk Digital Solutions from trying. I noticed a few friends on BBM were using BeepUs and decided to check it out. The free BeepUs app uses the new BBM social network APIs to allow you to have free Push to Talk conversations with your BBM friends.

I am not sure how well this will work continuously since RIM does have some limits on the transfer size and continuous connections on BBM but the concept is awesome. If you like sending voice notes or using Push to Talk you will love BeepUs . Hopefully Tuk keeps on adding new features to the app!

ZocDoc Launches BlackBerry App to Help You Find a Doctor (US Only)

ZocDoc is one of those services you hope to not use often but is very useful. Their service intends to help you find a doctor near you who accepts your insurance and book an appointment through the service. They also let you read other patients reviews of doctors all from your mobile phone.

They currently offer over 5.5 million appointments with doctors including primary care physicians, dermatologists, OB/GYNs, dentists, eye doctors, and many more. They told us that they have over 700,000 patients per month who use the service to find doctors in major US markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, Philadelphia, Houston, Phoenix, Washington, DC, Atlanta, San Francisco and Boston.

Free imo.im IM Client Beta Adds Morse Code & Sleep Scheduling Features

Imo.im has been updating the BlackBerry beta of their cross platform IM client for awhile now. We mentioned their last major release that added location sharing and now they let us know that they have two new tricks. The latest release v1.1.1 adds the ability to chat using morse code which converts your message into vibrations. That could be quite a bit of vibrating during a meeting so I am not sure how great of an idea it is. The second option is on the other side of the spectrum allowing for sleep scheduling. It lets you set your schedule so you don’t have to worry about getting morse code vibrations or other messages while you are in bed.

Free MyMobileCoverage App Lets You Create Your Own Personalized Coverage Map

One of our tipsters pointed out a really slick free app for BlackBerry smartphones called MyMobileCoverage. The app lets you create your own personalized coverage map so you can visualize your dropped calls, data speeds, voice quality, and other metrics from the app. It has some pretty slick features though it is even useful just to get your CellID.

This is obviously not for the privacy conscious like me but the idea and implementation is actually pretty impressive and reviews on App World are positive.

Twitter v2.1.0.20 & Facebook v2.0.0.55 for BlackBerry in Beta Zone

The BlackBerry Beta Zone rolled out some updates this week to the two main social apps. Twitter for BlackBerry was updated to v2.1.0.22 with a bunch of fixes to @Mentions, options, and virtual keyboard. Facebook for BlackBerry also got some love bringing it to v2.0.0.55 which supposedly fixes a bug or two.

Thrutu Lets You Share Location, Photos, & More While on the Phone

Thrutu came out for BlackBerry during DevCon but I did not have a chance to play with it until now. The app tries to solve a simple problem of sharing information while you are on a call. For example, say you want to send somebody a contact or a picture while on the phone. Or simply give them your location when you are not sure where you are. That is where Thrutu comes in.

The “prod” sort of creeps me out but I can see a use for the app especially since it is available on Android and iOS for cross platform uses. A Little Explanation of How LocalBar Works to Locally Install Bar Files

In case you have been playing with LocalBar on your PlayBook all weekend you may be interested in this. Yohan, the developer of LocalBar, posted on his blog offering a bit of insight into how LocalBar works and what it does. In essence he is replicating the sideloading process from a PC by performing it using the PlayBook NDK to load apps from Localhost. This is a hack RIM could probably easily block by blocking sideloading from Localhost but I really hope they DO NOT decide to do that. If anything RIM should be promoting OTA downloads since that is the only way for Beta Testing and even their own Beta Zone concept to work on the PlayBook.

Vlingo Now Available Free Compliments of RIM’s Outage Gift

A few readers let us know that RIM has made the next app available as part of their free apps gift in response to their previous outage last month. They have made the popular voice command app Vlingo free for a limited time which is a huge boon considering its $19.99 price tag. It essentially expands the BlackBerry voice commands to be able to control many different parts of the device by saying things like:

Free Opera Mini Browser Updated to v6.5 for BlackBerry

Opera gave their Opera Mini browser for BlackBerry a small update this week. The new update to v6.5 brings some of the features that Opera introduced to other devices recently. This new version adds a new Data Usage view that shows you how much you have saved by using Opera on your phone. They have also added a star button in the URL field to save the website as a bookmark.

Evernote v1.1.1 for the PlayBook Lets You Finally Save New Notes

 

I know many users were really glad when Evernote finally released a BlackBerry PlayBook client but it came with a caveat. It did not let you save new notes. Well that limitation is now gone thanks to an update rolled out today in App World to Evernote v1.1.1. This version lets you save new notes along with all the previous features. eBay for BlackBerry Gets Small Update to v2.0.0.47

RIM rolled out a small update to eBay for BlackBerrys over the weekend and it looks like a worthy update. I thought at first that it was just an incremental update but DoPy sent over a change log he spotted for the update. The new v2.0.0.47 adds a:

Test Your Internet Speed with Speedtest HD for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Xtreme Labs has done their magic again and released a FREE internet speed test app for the PlayBook. This new app called Speedtest HD lets you easily test the speed of your connection along with a few other factors. This seems to be the first build but hopefully Xtreme Labs will keep on updating it.

Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones 2.1 Beta now in BetaZone

This morning RIM released Twitter for BlackBerry 2.1 to BetaZone members.  This version has some great improvements to it.  You can read the full details after the break, and can find it via BlackBerry BetaZone.Additional Profile Functions

You’ll notice that My Profile has two new icons: Edit Profile and Switch Accounts. While you could always edit your profile via the Menu, now you can use the Edit Profile icon right from the Profile screen to change your picture or update your personal information. And the Edit Profile screen has received a new facelift. Read on to learn more about the Switch Account icon in Multi-Account Support.

Multi-Account Support

The new Multiple Account Support feature lets you use up to five accounts on Twitter for BlackBerry smartphones. When logged into multiple accounts, the current user name will appear in the upper-left corner of the header bar and the user picture will appear in the My Profile icon. You can quickly switch between accounts by using the Switch Account function, accessible from My Profile or via the Menu. Have an interesting Tweet in one account that you’d like to share from another account? No problem, you can cross-post Tweets and Retweets from one account to another without switching the current account view. You can also stay notified of Mentions and Messages with real-time notifications for each of your Twitter accounts.

Free Cozi MobileLife Family Organizer – Custom T-Mobile Variant

Back when T-Mobile announced the BlackBerry Bold 9900 it said it was shipping with T-Mobile’s MobileLife Family Organizer powered by Cozi. I was not familiar with the service then but T-Mobile let us know that the T-Mobile version of Cozi is now available for BlackBerrys and other platforms at www.t-Mobile.com/calendar. The thing is it seems like Cozi is free for any family who wants to share a family calendar, shipping list, and to do list.

Either way I am definitely going to check it out since the service has some pretty cool collaboration features for families. Devs: BlackBerry Analytics Service Comes out of Beta with v1.0

 

RIM announced their Analytics Service back in late September of 2010 and then launched a public beta at the end of February 2011. Now about 7 months later we have the final gold release of the BlackBerry Analytics Service v1.0. I don’t know if this official v1.0 version is any different than the current public beta but who knows. The Analytics Service remains free for all BlackBerry JAVA developers with up to 25,000,000 server calls per month included which should cover most users.

The service is still powered by WebTrends and offers up to 20 interactive reports for developers to see how their apps are being used. In short it gives developers an idea of what users like or don’t like about their apps or new versions. For example, I am hoping that Slacker Radio is getting a HUGE BLINKING error message every time it just hangs while loading on my BlackBerry Bold 9900.

Citrix Receiver for the BlackBerry PlayBook v0.9.1 Change Log

We told you earlier today that Citrix updated their Citrix Receiver app for the BlackBerry PlayBook to v0.9.1. At that time we did not have a change log but we were hoping that it included a key feature needed by many users, namely Enterprise Access Gateway support (SSL VPN). Usually we would just update the previous post with a change log but it turns out that this update actually brings Enterprise Gateway Support! This is a huge deal for PlayBook users since a huge portion of companies use Citrix Enterprise Gateway.

Here is the change log MrSimmonsSr received from Citrix and posted in the comments:

• Support for Access Gateway Enterprise 9.x and Secure Gateway 3.2
• Supports SSL/TLS connections, SSL Relay and SecureICA.
• Server URL Auto detection.

If Enterprise Gateway support was necessary for you then you may want to check out this new version in App World. MrSimmonsSr managed to get it to give him the app list but the apps are not running over the gateway for him yet. Hopefully that is just a small fix but let us know!
