BlackBerry Bridge v1.0.7.4 Update Change Log

This update came out on Thursday of last week but I just noticed that one of our tipsters sent us a change log for the update. Its nice to see RIM at least has a sort of informal change log for the update which is why I even bother mentioning it. The really odd part is that a BlackBerry PlayBook OS update has not come out with the update to the Bridge like it usually does…

RIM Rolling Out BlackBerry Bridge v1.0.7.4 – PlayBook OS Update Coming Soon?

We have been getting tips that RIM is starting yet another update rollout for BlackBerry Bridge this time to v1.0.7.4. These updates are almost always followed up with a PlayBook OS update. My guess by the marginal version update this is just a small PlayBook OS update. On the other hand it could be that this just helps with BlackBerry Bridge. I will report back once it is installed and everything is working.

BlackBerry Bridge Updated to v1.0.6.5 – PlayBook OS Update Coming Soon?

RIM has quietly started rolling out an update to the BlackBerry Bridge app today to v1.0.6.5. This is an update to the previous 1.0.5.6. The thing is these BlackBerry Bridge updates are practically always a harbinger of an upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook OS update since it takes 24 hours for App World to propagate them so they need to plan early.

No word on what this version of Bridge adds or what PlayBook OS update we will be seeing but anybody secretly hoping it is PlayBook OS 2.0 with an Android player? You can try to pick up the updated Bridge app in App World here.

3rd Party Apps Work Over Bridge After OS Update

This was not announced by RIM with the recent OS update but 3rd party apps including Facebook for BlackBerry PlayBook work now when you have it connected via bridge. This means you don’t have to have Wi-Fi connection to use your PlayBook. I tested this as soon as Poky from BlackBerry India told me about it. Facebook, and Blaq worked as soon as I opened the apps. I know it works because I am nowhere near a Wi-Fi connection. The regular browser also works. Not sure if RIM did not mention this because they did not want to make the carriers mad or it is a glitch. I think this is really awesome the fact that it works and I hope they do not do away with it.

RIM Pushing Out BlackBerry Bridge v1.0.5.6 Update

Now this is a pretty good sign that a PlayBook OS update is coming soon. I got a notification on my BlackBerry earlier tonight saying that BlackBerry Bridge has been updated to v1.0.5.6. In the past these updates have been harbingers for PlayBook OS updates in the next day or so. Anybody excited?

SMS Bridge for the PlayBook Gets Really Creative

I have heard quite a few users complaining that the BlackBerry Bridge for the PlayBook does not support SMS messages. While I don’t see that as critical since SMS is ridiculously expensive here in the US I am simply amazed with the creativity of Ming Huang and their SMS Bridge app for the PlayBook.

The bridge app forwards the SMS you get to your PlayBook as an email through its app on your BlackBerry. From what I can tell it doesn’t actually forward the email but rather makes a copy of the text message and then creates a new email out of it. Ming got even more creative by letting you reply to SMS from your PlayBook through those emails which are sent out through their transport. I am not sure exactly how that works but they also show your latest two phone calls in your inbox through the bridge which you can reply to and have it send a SMS to that contact.

Honestly I have not had a chance to try the app for myself since a friend borrowed my PlayBook but check out the SMS bridge for $3.99 in App World if you get a chance.

Latest BlackBerry PlayBook Commercial Features Bridge & Video Chat

RIM is continuing their PlayBook marketing campaign all over the place. The latest development is a new BlackBerry PlayBook commercial caught on camera by Adam @CrackBerry. The video quality is not the best but it is kind of nice to finally see RIM highlighting the BlackBerry Bridge as the feature it is. Check out the video below:
