BlackBerry OS 7 Web Inspector: Easily Debug BlackBerry Websites & WebWorks Browser Apps

I use Web Inspector all the time to work on BerryReview and other projects on my desktop and I was really glad to see it included on the BlackBerry PlayBook. I knew that RIM managed to stick it into BlackBerry 7 and I finally got a chance to use it this weekend. In case you have never heard of Web Inspector before then here is a brief explanation. Web Inspector is a feature in WebKit (usually only desktop clients) which allows you to view and edit the page source, CSS, live DOM hierarchy, script debugging, profiling and much much more. For example, you can see what it would look like if you changed the text color or you can navigate what your script has done to the DOM.

 

Back to the topic at hand. I needed to debug a JavaScript error on the mobile version of BerryReview along with an issue with our CDN that did not show images or styling sometimes on BlackBerrys. I had tried debugging this issue on my Bold 9930 when it launched but the Web Inspector did not work that well in the early builds.

Now on my BlackBerry Curve 9350 I have to say Web Inspector is the easiest way to debug and test any mobile web apps or websites for BlackBerry. It is essentially like having the Chrome or Safari WebKit based Web Inspector tool for BlackBerry. From what I understand it even works with the BlackBerry 7 simulator so you don’t need a BlackBerry 7 device. There are a few tricks to get it running so read below:

Let us know if it works for you! I am amazed how responsive it is and how fast it is. Even when you hover over elements on the DOM it hovers them on the BlackBerry browser. Changes are instant. Great work from the Torch Mobile team on this one!

OS 7.0.0.540 Officially Released for BlackBerry Torch 9810 & 9860

RIM seems to have push OS 7.0.0.540 through certification at a few carriers. It is now available from multiple Vodafones around the world for both the BlackBerry Torch 9810 and BlackBerry Torch 9860. No word on what is new in this release but the same version on the Bold 9900 runs well.

Warning: This OS will not install on any other BlackBerry besides the one mentioned above. Don’t forget to delete the vendor.xml file located in c:program files>common files>research in motion>apploader to install it on a different carriers device. If you do not know how to upgrade your BlackBerry OS please start by reading this step by step guide.

US Cellular Releases OS 7.0.0.464 for the Torch 9850

T-Mobile Makes BlackBerry Torch 9810 Official With Availability Starting Today

T-Mobile let us know that they have made the BlackBerry Torch 9810 official. The new device is already available in an exclusive pre-sale to T-Mobile business customers starting today and will be available to all online and in stores starting November 9th. The Torch 9810 is expected to cost $249.99 after a $50 mail-in-rebate card with a 2 year contract. There is no mention of UMA which is interesting… so I doubt it will be included at launch.

BlackBerry Torch 9810 Spotted in T-Mobile Inventory System

We have already heard a couple of solid rumors that the BlackBerry Torch 9810 was coming to T-Mobile USA. Now we have it showing up in the T-Mobile internal inventory system spotted by TmoNews. This more or less fits in with the current rumored November 9th launch date but no price is specified yet. It will be interesting if they will price it as competitively at AT&T.

The leaks are back with a new OS for the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and BlackBerry Torch 9860. The N4BB team scored OS 7.0.0.440 for both devices which is a nice version jump. We don’t know what is new in this version but let us know what you find!

BlackBerry Torch 9850 & 9860 Commercial Posted by RIM

 

RIM has put up a commercial for their new BlackBerry Torch 9850 & 9860 this week. The commercial shows off some of the features of the device as RIM’s redeeming all touch BlackBerry. Hopefully the QNX touch BlackBerrys really help RIM take off in the space. I am kind of digging the fact that RIM is finally showing off the features of the phone in commercials instead of more esoteric stuff. Check out the video below:

Wind Canada Getting Bold 9900, Curve 9360, & Torch 9860 This Month

User on Wind up in Canada have been waiting patiently for their BlackBerry 7 devices to launch. According to some information leaked on Howard Forums (via MobileSyrup) Wind users may not need to wait long. It looks like Wind is planning on releasing the BlackBerry Bold 9900, Curve 9360, and Torch 9860 in mid-October. My guess is we will hear more about pricing and exact dates soon.

Rumor: T-Mobile BlackBerry Torch 9810 Coming November 9th?

I thought that the BlackBerry Torch 9810 was an exclusive for AT&T but it looks like that exclusivity has a time limit unlike the original Torch. TmoNews scored a supposed leaked roadmap for T-Mobile showing a RIM BlackBerry “Dumoine” coming on November 11th. Sadly they don’t have an HSPA+ PlayBook listed but hopefully that is coming soon too.

I didn’t think that T-Mobile would be getting the Torch 9810 but last time I checked it has the compatible AWS frequency bands. Would you pick one up when it launches if this pans out?

Usually CDMA BlackBerrys do not get as much OS love when they launch so its nice to see that changing. Lucas @N4BB spotted Panhandle Communications launch of OS 7.0.0.362 for the BlackBerry Bold 9930, Curve 9350, & Torch 9850. This is the latest OS we have seen yet so if you are having issues with the previous OS 7.0.0.353 you may want to give this one a spin.

FAQ: Are BlackBerry Torch 9800 & Torch 9810 Cases & Accessories Compatible?

I have been asked this question multiple times in the last few weeks so I thought it would be best to lay the question to rest. Many users have been asking if the accessories for the BlackBerry Torch 9800 are compatible with the new BlackBerry Torch 9810. I have tested out multiple accessories on both devices from Case-Mate, OtterBox, and other vendors and so far they have all fit like a charm. RIM confirms that the dimensions of both devices are identical and their accessories like the SyncPod clearly are for both devices.

The easiest way to confirm this and lay the question to rest is to look at RIM’s official ShopBlackBerry store which seems to have simply changed the description of every 9800 accessory to say 9800/9810. Even the battery (F-S1) is the same on both devices. In other words this is more of an upgrade like the 9780 was for the 9700 instead of the incompatible Storm 9500/9530 to the Storm 9520/9550.

Let us know if you run into any accessory or case that does not work between the two devices!

RIM Interviews the Qantas Wallabies With their PlayBooks & Torch 9810s

 

I have to admit I had no idea who the Qantas Wallabies were when JD sent this to me. I did a bit of digging and then realized I should probably mention it for our mates down under. RIM posted up three episodes of them interviewing players of the Qantas Wallabies about their crazy game day rituals (many of them involving lucky underwear?) and some of their craziest injuries. They also talk about how they have been using their BlackBerry Torch 9810s and PlayBooks. I was really hoping RIM would do something like that stateside with a device called the “PlayBook” but they have not played on that yet.

That was quick! Jacob let us know (via N4BB) that Verizon is now selling the BlackBerry Torch 9850 on their website. The Torch 9850 is the all touch BlackBerry that redeems the Storm line. Verizon BlackBerry Torch 9850 Officially Launches September 8th!

We heard rumors that it was coming but now it is official. Verizon has announced the pricing and launch dates for the all touch BlackBerry Torch 9850. The Torch 9850 will be available on Verizon’s website on Sept. 8th and will be in stores on Sept. 15th. Yes you read that right it launches in less than 2 days. Nothing else is really new other than it coming with a free 16GB MicroSDHC card.

Bell & Virgin Mobile Canada Release BlackBerry Curve 9360

Bell and Virgin Mobile Canada were supposed to launch the new BlackBerry Curve 9360 on August 29th but it looks like it came in a little early this weekend. Michelle @CrackBerry noticed that Bell and Virgin Mobile have the device now available on their website. Both of them are selling it for $49.95 with a 3 year contract and $349.95 without a contract. Bell is also now selling the BlackBerry Torch 9860 for $129.95 with a 3 year contract and $599.95 without a contract.

US Cellular Confirms BlackBerry Torch 9850 Launch Date & Price

US Cellular has been pretty quiet during the BlackBerry 7 device rollout. Now we have them coming out and announcing that they will be getting the BlackBerry Torch 9850 (All Touch). They will be selling the device in stores on August 26th for $199.99 after a $100 mail in rebate. That is a bit pricier than what others are charging but they do have some perks like battery swap and rewards program for paying bills on time, adding a line, or referring new customers. They are also offering a switcher credit of $100 per line for users who switch to US Cellular and activate a new smartphone.
