I could have sworn that this version was released before but it looks like I was wrong. TTune pointed out that RIM has rolled out a small update to BlackBerry Desktop Software for PCs bringing it to v6.1.0 B38. The Published Date on RIM’s website says it came out on November 16th but this is the first I have seen of it.
If you compare the change log from the previous version 6.1.0.35 to the current version then the main thing I notice different is:
You can download Desktop Manager v6.1.0 B38 here. Let us know if you notice anything else different. I am kind of curious if it also adds support for the just announced Bold 9790 and Curve 9380.

RIM rolled out a small update to the official Facebook for BlackBerry client in App World. The new update brings us to v2.0.0.58 from the previous v2.0.0.50. According to the change log this small update is to correct for changes in the Facebook infrastructure.
you guys need to not post these kind of things, they aren’t really relevant. I’ve seen posts regarding apps that got bumped from version x.x023 to x.x033. I’d report it only if it gets updated from 1.x to 2.x. Or there aren’t any news in the blackberry world anymore?

One of RIM’s Project Managers, John, let drop in the Beta Zone that a new PlayBook OS update is coming soon. This is an interm update that includes bug fixes and improvements without any new features. It is intended to fix some issues before the main 2.0 update in February. Mauricio @BBRocks noticed the thread on the beta zone which you can check out here but this summary below:

Are there really NO new features ready to be implemented? Faithful PlayBook owners have been waiting for native email since release 7 months ago. Now we get an update with time zones and wi-fi drivers?
Disappointed to say the least.

EmacBerry has updated their popular FileScout file manager application to v2.7.1.5 this week. This update brings a slew of improvements and other updates but mainly improves the DropBox integration they introduced in previous versions. This is because DropBox released a new version of their API on October 22nd and FileScout now supports this new DropBox APIv1 which is supposed to be “massively improved.”
Here is the full change log:
When multiple applications have registered itself as content handler for a file type FileScout will show a application chooser. So now you can select if you like to open a file with application ‘A’ or with application ‘B’ [if 'A' & 'B' have registered itself for the same file type (mimetype/extension/suffix)]
When you create a playlist the content of the playlist will be sorted (depending on your current FileScout sorting settings)
New key shortcut to close FileScout instantly: [SHIFT]+[X]
Some performance improvements when working with the TextViewer/Editor (the hourglass should appear less often – if at all)
EMail-Archive function: Instead of the Message-HashCode a TimeStamp will be used in order to create a Message-Subfolder (for some reason there have been reports that the message hash was not ‘unique-enough’)
*.M4B files will be considered as playable Audio files.
FileScout will check the compatibility with the installed Dropbox Plugin (and automatically open the Browser if an update of the Plugin is required)
Filescout Dropbox Plugin – Dropbox APIv1 Support:
Since the 22′nd of October Dropbox have released a new Version of the API. The FileScout Dropbox Plugin will now make use of the new APIv1. Basically you should not really notice a difference. Please see the list below for the changes:
When you want to upload a file to your Dropbox the Plugin now will list all content of your account (not only the directories/folder structure) – so now you can see if a certain file is already is present in your Dropbox
Create a temp Share Link for any file in your Dropbox. No matter if you download or upload a file – for any item displayed in your Dropbox you can create a time restricted (temp) link that you can send to anybody (even without a Dropbox account) in order to share the item. Simply highlight the file and select ‘Share’ from the BlackBerry Menu – after a short wile you get a dialog showing the link information (containing the information for how long the link is valid)). The link (URL) will be automatically copied into your device clipboard so you can paste it where ever you like (eMail, twitter, facebook, etc…). Please note that you can create also Share links for a Dropbox folder – in this case Dropbox will made the complete content (including all Subfolders) available in a ZIP-Archive – so use this function wise!
For OS6.x and OS7.x the authentication works now completely via the official Dropbox Website (accessed via the BlackBerry Browser) – So there is no need to enter your Dropbox account information into the FileScout App anylonger

I just got an update notification for the Evernote app for BlackBerry smartphones. Evernote pushed out a small bug fixing update to v3.3.350 that thankfully includes a change log. This update came out on Thursday of last week but I just noticed that one of our tipsters sent us a change log for the update. Its nice to see RIM at least has a sort of informal change log for the update which is why I even bother mentioning it. The really odd part is that a BlackBerry PlayBook OS update has not come out with the update to the Bridge like it usually does…

We have been getting tips that RIM is starting yet another update rollout for BlackBerry Bridge this time to v1.0.7.4. These updates are almost always followed up with a PlayBook OS update. My guess by the marginal version update this is just a small PlayBook OS update. On the other hand it could be that this just helps with BlackBerry Bridge. I will report back once it is installed and everything is working.
Update: RIM let us know that their note in their blog post this morning that said App World not being included in this version of the PlayBook OS 2.0 developer build ”was a typo that has since been removed.” Hopefully that means RIM is not even considering it anymore. Now I can finally download the update and check for myself.

RIM has announced that they are starting to roll out BBM v6.0.1 today which is a slight upgrade to the official current version 6.0.0.129. This new version has been in the beta zone before since the beginning of last month and includes some small tweaks. It mainly adds a new automated way to search for BBM connected apps in App World along with making it easier to share.
The key changes include:
Explore BBM-connected Apps – BBM users will now be able to pull up “Explore BBM-connected Apps” from a menu in the BBM Contacts screen. This action is designed to automate a BlackBerry App World storefront search for “BBM” by redirecting users to a list of up to 25 of the most popular BBM-connected apps available.
Sharing App content with your BBM Contacts is easier – Many BBM users have told us that they love sharing app content with their BBM friends who use the same app, but they also wanted to share content with their BBM friends who don’t have the app. BBM v6.0.1 is designed so that you can now share app-specific content with your BBM contacts regardless of whether your contact has the app installed.

This latest security advisory goes to show why RIM’s current model for carrier approved OS updates is not ideal. RIM put out what they call a security notice about a BlackBerry 6 WebKit browser vulnerability back in March of this year for an exploit found in the BlackBerry 6 Browser at Pwn2Own that month. RIM said back then that devices updated to OS 6.0.0.526+ were safe from the vulnerability. They then finally issued a security advisory this week for the same old vulnerability with quite a few more details about it.
The reason RIM took so long to release the advisory was because RIM had to wait for carriers to approve the security software update. RIM provided the fix within two weeks of learning of the vulnerability. Now SIX MONTHS LATER RIM has found that “a sufficient number of wireless services providers” have made the update available to their customers.
Here is RIM’s explanation for the delay:
A sufficient number of wireless service providers must make a security software update for BlackBerry smartphones publicly available to customers before RIM will publish full details of the software update in a Security Advisory. RIM delivered the software updates to its wireless service provider partners. Where a wireless service provider may not have then provided the software updates to all customers, this policy is intended to protect those customers from increased risk of exploitation.
Within two weeks of learning of the vulnerabilities that this Security Advisory addresses RIM tested and delivered fixed software to our wireless service provider partners for their Technical Acceptance process. During the Technical Acceptance process, RIM monitored update availability for nine affected devices available through nearly 500 carriers globally until an availability level was achieved that allowed us to be confident that disclosure of the security vulnerabilities addressed by the software update would protect the interests of the majority of our customers.
RIM continues to work with our partners to expedite the process of software update delivery to BlackBerry smartphone customers.
Note: KB26132 was previously published as a Security Notice to responsibly advise customers about the existence of one of the three vulnerabilities, which had been publicly disclosed, and provide workaround options in lieu of a software update to address that issue for all affected customers. This Security Advisory replaces that Security Notice and provides full details of publicly available software updates that address that issue and two related issues, and urges affected customers to upgrade.
Six months to roll out a relatively critical software update is simply ridiculous in this fast changing security scene… Thankfully the PlayBook QNX based OS has been consistently pushing out security updates within 2 weeks or so.
If you have not already received it you will shortly be getting an update notification for App World. RIM has rolled out v3.0.1.29 of App World following a Beta Zone version of v3.0.1.28. My guess is that they are pretty much the same but you can check it out for yourself sans keycode.
Update: It looks like RIM has gotten around to releasing the updates to Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger bringing them to v2.5.108.
RIM usually updates their native IM clients in one batch so this is a bit odd. Josh pointed out to us that Windows Live Messenger for BlackBerry has been updated to v2.5.108 through App World. The thing is that Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger seem to still be sitting pretty at v2.5.85. My guess is that maybe RIM rolled out the Windows Live Messenger update early or the others are stuck in App World cache limbo… Or it could be simply that RIM is breaking tradition and just updating Windows Live Messenger by itself.

Le ha costado un par de día a RIM publicar algo en su web, si lo había hecho antes en las redes sociales Twitter y Facebook, pero ahora ya tenemos una página donde podemos consultar que está pasando con el Servicio BlackBerry, en la misma ha reconocido que existen también problemas en América aunque no de detalla si existe relación.
Esperamos por eso que dicha página no muera y RIM aprenda de ello informando puntualmente en los futuros problemas que haya en su red, aunque esperamos que no se repitan nunca jamás ¿?
RIM has pushed out an update to the BlackBerry PlayBook OS bringing it to OS v1.07.3312. This version is now available and addresses a vulnerability that Adobe announced in Flash on September 21st that could potentially cause issues for devices that support Flash though no exploits are currently documented. Users running OS v1.0.7.2942 will get an update that will only include this Adobe Flash update and should take only a few minutes to install. This is because of the piecemeal updates RIM allowed for in the last update which should make subsequent updates much easier.
So what are you waiting for? Hit that “check for updates” button now!
RIM more or less let the BlackBerry Internet Service v4.1 features out of the bag awhile ago but we have been waiting for the update to go live. It was supposed to go live in Asia Pacific on Sept 10th, Europe on Sept 23rd, and North America on October 11th but that did not happen for Europe. Now CrackBerry has heard from users in Europe that BIS v4.1 is live there. It went live in Asia Pacific in September but we still don’t know if the October 11th date is set for North America.
Either way here is a reminder of the mostly BlackBerry OS 7 specific features that RIM has confirmed for BIS 4.1:
New Features of BlackBerry Internet Service 4.1
The BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) is designed to provide BlackBerry smartphone users with access to email messaging, instant messaging, Internet browsing, and more. BlackBerry Internet Service subscribers can receive automatic delivery of email messages from up to ten email accounts on their BlackBerry smartphones. The following is a list of new features being introduced with BlackBerry Internet Service 4.1: Improved large email and native attachment support
Subscribers using BlackBerry smartphones with BlackBerry® 7 installed can:
No interruption to email flow on SIM swap
Subscribers who insert a new SIM card in to their BlackBerry smartphone, including SIM cards from a different wireless service provider, no longer experience email flow interruptions. The BlackBerry Internet Service only stops sending email to a smartphone when the subscriber deletes all data from the smartphone, not when a new SIM card is inserted in to the smartphone.
Due to this change, before selling a smartphone, subscribers must delete all data from the smartphone (security wipe) to protect personal information, including email messages and synchronized contacts and calendar events. For more information on performing a security wipe, please see KB28225.
Note: This functionality will be available when BlackBerry Internet Service 4.1 is released in all regions.
Inbox priming for new account integrations
When a subscriber adds an email address to a smartphone, the inbox on the subscriber’s smartphone is pre-populated with up to 20 existing email messages from the email account.
Additional language support
Latvian and Lithuanian are supported by the BlackBerry Internet Service. Emails received in these languages can now be viewed on BlackBerry smartphones.
Files & Folders by Innovatology has been updated to V2.3.
The main features in the upgrade are: -E-mail a file via your mail server (experimental) -works with Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, Windows Live, MSN, many Exchange and other SMTP servers -support for plain SMTP, authentication, SSL and StartTLS
RIM has quietly started rolling out an update to the BlackBerry Bridge app today to v1.0.6.5. This is an update to the previous 1.0.5.6. The thing is these BlackBerry Bridge updates are practically always a harbinger of an upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook OS update since it takes 24 hours for App World to propagate them so they need to plan early.
No word on what this version of Bridge adds or what PlayBook OS update we will be seeing but anybody secretly hoping it is PlayBook OS 2.0 with an Android player? You can try to pick up the updated Bridge app in App World here.
I am not sure why RIM is limiting this to NA Mac users but if you happen to be one head on over to the Beta Zone for the update. This brings us to v2.2 from the previous v2.1.2. I did not originally have the program available to me until I changed my profile in the Beta Zone to say I have a Mac. No words on what this update brings but RIM wants users to focus on the core functionality for testing.
