Free QRem App Lets You Scan AND Create QR Codes on Your BlackBerry

  

While there are quite a few QR Code scanners out there for BlackBerry QRem is the first one I have seen that lets you generate and create QR codes from your device. They built their app to let you create your own QR codes for Contacts, Calendar Events, Tasks, URLs, Memos, PIN numbers, GPS coordinates, Emails, Phone Numbers, and SMS messages. It adds a new context menu item to applications that let you simply select “Show QR Code” and it will generate a QR code for that item.

Its kind of a cool way to share a contact between different devices or a calendar event. Best of all it is totally free. You can pick up QRem in App World here.

Free QR Code Scanner for the BlackBerry PlayBook

 

The PlayBook has not had a proper QR code scanner until now. Chris let me know about a new app called QR Scanner by Tobias Rothe that just hit App World which works very well. Hopefully RIM includes QR code scanning in the PlayBook APIs in the future but until then check out QR Scanner below.

Right now the app lets you see the text in the QR code and if it is a URL you can choose to open it in the browser. More features are promised to come but will probably have to wait until RIM releases more API’s.

Easy BlackBerry Browser Bookmarklets – Create QR Codes or Search BerryReview & More!

For those of you who don’t know what a bookmarklet is here is a brief description. A bookmarklet is a small bit of JavaScript code stored in the URL of a bookmark in your browser that is designed to add functionality by clicking on it. I was thinking about this concept when I was at BlackBerry World and found it actually works in the new BlackBerry WebKit browser. While I would rather have more robust Browser addons like I mentioned yesterday this has spurred my interest for now.

Here are some of the bookmarklets I created so far with more to come soon. You simply hit the BlackBerry menu button while hovering on top of the link below and select “Add Links to Bookmarks.”

• Search BerryReview Popup Bookmarklet
• Search Google Mobile Popup Bookmarklet (instead of searching Google Desktop search like the browser does)
• Create a QR Code for the website address you are currently looking at using SnapMyInfo

There are limitations though that annoy me like not being able to save a bookmarklet to the homescreen but I plan on creating many more. The possibilities are endless from a “Subscribe in Google Reader” bookmarklet to a “highlight specific text or searching Wikipedia inline.
