The popular Show Me the Images app has been updated by Kisailabs this week. The new update finally gives it BlackBerry OS 7.0 compatibility which they were struggling with for awhile. As a reminder Show Me the Images makes images download automatically in messages based on your safe list, block list, or without any restrictions instead of RIM’s method of making you request the images.

You have to love these kinds of studies. The latest coming out of IBM Research is a 345 user study into how productive it is to file your emails into folders. According to their filings findings it took users an average of 17 seconds to find an email via searching compared to 58 seconds to find an email by folder. Filing emails also did not make the success of finding the intended email any more successful. They claim that users are spending 20+ minutes a day filing emails in a pointless exercise.
They also delve into labels and conversation threads like you find in Gmail. According to the study users resisted tagging emails though did not delve further into it. On the other hand they found that conversation threading (a sweet feature that RIM added in BlackBerry OS 6.0) is essentially a form of custom search that makes it easier to find emails. IBM Research seems to be all for conversation threading though they want Superthreading which groups multiple conversations together under a topic or project.

I am still not sure if anybody at RIM has sat down with the folks in India and explained to them how BlackBerry encryption works. Regular consumer BIS and BBM conversations are NOT encrypted which means carriers and governments could view the contents if they had access to the data stream through the carrier. This is nothing new and has been the case for years. We covered this detail in an article back in August of last year on “What communication is encrypted on your BlackBerry.” To sum it up your regular BIS email is not encrypted between your device and the carriers BIS server only BES email is encrypted. BBM messages for consumers and most business users are also not encrypted but rather are scrambled using the same key found on any BlackBerry device unless a BES admin sets is differently which would stop you from BBM-ing anybody outside your BES.
The rocket scientists in India’s Department of Telecommunications seem to not have the technical savvy to read clear text on the wire so they have been hounding RIM to provide them a solution. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that RIM has given India’s DOT a solution to monitor email and BBM which essentially does what any carrier could do if they had the technical know how. India claims this is to protect from terrorists that are using “Encrypted Emails” the problem is RIM’s solution will not help them at all when it comes to this.
If a terrorist or any company uses a BlackBerry on a BES than all BES emails are encrypted and even RIM cannot give carriers access to them. In other words all they need to do to foil the brilliant rocket scientists at India’s DOT is setup their device on a BES server. There are tons of technologies just like this that India can also not monitor like SSL, VPN, PGP, etc but I guess India is still going to try.

Back in July we got a sneak peak at the BIS 4.1 feature set from N4BB along with tentative rollout dates for Asia Pacific on Sept 10th, Europe on Sept 23rd, and North America on October 8th. We just confirmation from one of our sources that these dates have not changed except for North America getting slightly pushed off to October 10th, 2011 which is oddly a Monday. Sadly there is no word about the different PlayBook interface system hinted in the last leak. The official change log for the rollout is below:

I'm an "Inbox Zero" guy - my goal is to empty my email inbox as quickly as possible. Once a message has been dealt with I file it in an appropriate folder immediately. Once it's filed I move on to the next one. This is also how I deal with my follow-up - if it's in the inbox it is not done yet.
Depending on how many folders and sub-folders you have it can be quite time consuming to file messages in Outlook, I'm forever dragging and scrolling messages from the Inbox to my labyrinth of sub-folders. I've moved to filing exclusively on my BlackBerry smartphone because it is just easier and for those of you who use Outlook can appreciate, the BlackBerry is actually smarter than Outlook.
While reading a message click the MENU button scroll to and select "File", note a quicker way to do this is to use the build-in shortcut "i" so while reading a message and are ready to file it press "i".
You will than be presented with your tree of folders.
To quickly drill down to the desired folder begin typing in the name of the folder, in this case I'm looking to file it in folder "Personal".
Now where this really gets exciting (as exciting as filing email messages gets) is that the BlackBerry learns as you file. It begins to remember where specific types of email get filed, so if I file messages from Kevin and Adam in my "CrackBerry.com" folder. Therefore the next time I press "i" to file it will drill down to the CrackBerry.com folder automatically anticipating that I will want that folder. There is no app for that on other platforms. :)
I find that with the short cut "i" and the filing memory the BlackBerry develops I'm able to manage a Zero Inbox much more efficiently than I can using the Outlook window. Now when all my filing is done and my inbox is empty I feel as though all the planets are in alignment perfectly when I see the magical message on my BlackBerry *No Messages*

Some purported screenshots of a BlackBerry PlayBook running OS 2.0 have surfaced from MaxPDA showing some interesting things. First of all it seems to show that you can use Exchange ActiveSync, IMAP, POP, CalDAV, & CardDAV for mail, calendar, and contacts which is a huge change for RIM. It also shows deep connections with Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. The screenshots also show off an icon for the Android player. Take this all with a grain of salt but this could be very cool. It does make you wonder if the BBM icon shown is native BBM and if it will also include BES integration or it will use a different kind of BES like is rumored for the BlackBerry Colt QNX phone.

Bloomberg has been fanning the rumor mill today with some tidbits from “three people familiar with the plan” for RIM’s QNX OS. These “three people” requested to not be identified because the effort is obviously not public but they are confirming that QNX BlackBerry smartphones will also run the Android Player in “early” 2012. According to one of these “people” the Android app player is the same one as RIM is working on for the PlayBook and it is being “tweaked to fit the different screen size and resolution of various BlackBerry models.” They also said that RIM plans on having this Android player installed on the QNX phones at launch and not as an upgrade like they are doing for the PlayBook.
One of the people also confirmed that RIM is planning on issuing a PlayBook OS update in September that “adds a dedicated email program and BlackBerry Messenger.” Two of the people stated that the PlayBook Android Player “may come later on in the year.”
In other words these rumors don’t really confirm or deny anything we didn’t already know or assume. Still aren’t rumors fun?

We have been having fun with the Android Player on the BlackBerry PlayBook since it was discovered by some devs early this morning and then subsequently leaked. We have found that the build has some built in apps including an email client and browser! it also uses the Android keyboard which is interesting. Just to give you an idea this early build of the Player is build 0.0.1.152 which should give you some idea of how early of a build we are talking about.

We know that native email is coming to the BlackBerry PlayBook soon but its nice to see more signs pointing in that direction. After writing up yesterday about the leaked BIS 4.1 feature set I noticed the last slide mentioned something interesting as a “User Interface Change.” In it RIM says they have updated the BIS login page and setup page to “advise user(s) that BlackBerry tablet setup in not supported when using these interfaces.”
Which begs the question of where and how it will be supported…

Wow BIS is finally getting a significant feature bump with v4.1. The team at N4BB managed to score slides detailing all of the features coming in BIS 4.1 along with rollout dates. Some of the features are also BlackBerry OS 7.0 specific which should be launching around the same time. According to their sources BIS 4.1 will be rolling out to Asia Pacific on Sept 10th, Europe on Sept 23rd, and North America on October 8th.
I am really excited about the new features including my favorite which is email inbox priming. That is a feature that has been available on BES servers for awhile giving you access to your last chunk of emails. With BIS 4.1 it will preload the most recent 20 emails so you will have conversations on your device preloaded. There are loads of other goodies including better account management and message improvements for OS 7.0 so check them out in the slides!

The whole idea of popups for notifications started as a trend awhile back and the apps for it have grown more complex as they develop. That is why I was intrigued by QuickView Pro when one of our readers pointed it out. Ahaz Designs has gone back to the basics and simply offered an app that will popup a preview of email or SMS with your own preset size, color, and length of notification.
