Facebook for BlackBerry Gets Small Update to v2.0.0.58

RIM rolled out a small update to the official Facebook for BlackBerry client in App World. The new update brings us to v2.0.0.58 from the previous v2.0.0.50. According to the change log this small update is to correct for changes in the Facebook infrastructure.

You can download the updated Facebook in App World though if you are not having problems you could just skip it.

you guys need to not post these kind of things, they aren’t really relevant. I’ve seen posts regarding apps that got bumped from version x.x023 to x.x033. I’d report it only if it gets updated from 1.x to 2.x. Or there aren’t any news in the blackberry world anymore?

BBX Smartphones to Have Same Pixel Density as BlackBerry PlayBook?

I was going through my notes from DevCon last week and I remembered something that Alec Saunders, RIM’s new head of Developer Relations, said in a response to a question I asked. I asked the panel at this press only session how easy it would be to run current BlackBerry PlayBook Flash, Native, or Android apps on future BBX phones. He responded that RIM is doing everything they can to ensure that the BBX platform phones have the same Pixel Density as the BlackBerry PlayBook. I tried pushing further but all he would say was that they should run just fine or would take a few simple tweaks.

Keep in mind pixel density does not mean the same thing as having the same 1024px x 600px resolution as the PlayBook from what I understand. Trying to simplify it (Thanks Wikipedia), pixel density is a measurement related by the size of the display in inches and the total number of pixels in the horizontal and vertical directions. From my calculations the pixel density of the PlayBook is about 170 which is not bad compared to the iPad which has about a 130px density due to the larger screen.

Still it would be a huge boon for BBX phones if apps and games designed for the PlayBook could just as easily run on BBX phones without any changes. What do you think?

BlackBerry Smartphone Models and their Codenames in One Chart (FAQ)

I cannot count the times that I have been asked for a chart of the different BlackBerry models and the codenames associated with them. I finally got some free time on the train earlier this week and started compiling a list of the codenames I remembered off the top of my head. They should all be right but I am counting on all of you to keep me honest. There are also new unannounced models like the upcoming Curve “All Touch” Malibu (CDMA) and others that are not 100% confirmed yet but let us know in the comments if we missed any. I am also blanking on the codename for the original BlackBerry Bold 9900…

BlackBerry WebWorks SDK v2.1 For Smartphones Now Available

Last month RIM introduced the BlackBerry WebWorks SDK v2.1 for the PlayBook Tablet OS and now the smartphone variant is getting the same upgrade treatment. Developers can now download the new BlackBerry WebWorks SDK v2.1 for smartphones. This update brings similar functionality, APIs, and features as the Tablet update.

This update was codenamed the Epsilon release of WebWorks and includes:

  • NTLM & BASIC Authentication support (NTLM support requires a BlackBerry Enterprise Server)
  • Camera API (take a picture or a video)
  • Top Banner Indicator API – The Banner Indicator API allows you to place your own icon and number in the banner area of the device home screen. This allows you to provide notifications to your users of changes in your application while it’s running in the background.
  • Enhanced Push APIs – The enhanced Push API takes advantage of all the push capabilities the BlackBerry platform has to offer and is compatible with the latest version of the BlackBerry Push service. One new feature of the enhanced BlackBerry WebWorks push API is the ability to have your application register to be woken up when new push data arrives for your application.
  • Improved rendering speeds for applications not using loading/transition screens

HTC HD7S (AT&T)

The good: The HTC HD7S offers a sharper Super LCD touch screen with a built-in kickstand. The Windows Phone device ships with the NoDo update, which brings copy-and-paste and performance improvements.

The bad: There was a constant background hiss during phone calls. Camera quality could be better.

The bottom line: The HTC HD7S offers the benefit of a large touch screen with a sharp picture and fast performance, but it falls short of the smartphone competition in terms of camera and call quality.

It certainly adds to the choice of Windows Phone handsets, but is it the best option out there? That depends on what you're looking for.

Design
When we reviewed the HTC HD7, one of our only complaints about it was the outdated hardware, so it's nice to see that HTC addressed at least one aspect of that problem in the HD7S. Switching out the old TFT screen for a WVGA Super LCD brings a sharper and more vibrant picture. The pixels aren't as visible as before and colors look richer. Plus, the 4.3 inches of screen real estate is great when you're viewing Web sites and video.

The touch screen also felt responsive, as we easily navigated through the various screens and menus. It is a fingerprint magnet though--more than most--and if we're comparing screens, the Samsung Focus' Super AMOLED display is still better, as it offers even more saturated colors, finer detail, and better outdoor visibility. That said, you're not going to have problems seeing what's on the HD7S' screen and we very much appreciate the improved display.

The rest of the smartphone's design is pretty much the same as the HD7's. You still get a built-in kickstand on the back, this time with some metallic gold accents. The handset is on the larger and heavier side, with HTC's solid build quality. One thing we noticed, however, is there is a slim gap between the bottom of the battery door and the rest of the phone, leaving room for dust, dirt, and other debris to get in there. We wouldn't say it's a dealbreaker, but it's definitely not something we were expecting from a company that pays so much attention to detail.


The built-in kickstand is sturdy and comes in quite handy for watching videos on the phone or when using it as a picture viewer.

Features
The HTC HD7S ships running the Windows Phone 7 operating system with the latest NoDo update, which includes copy-and-paste support and performance improvements. As a phone, the HD7S offers quad-band world roaming, a speakerphone, call waiting, call forwarding, conference calling, voice dialing, and text and multimedia messaging. The smartphone is 3G-capable and has Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1, and GPS, but Windows Phone currently doesn't support tethering capabilities.

Though customization is limited in Windows Phone 7, OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) and carrier partners can still put their own spin on the devices, and AT&T and HTC have done so. HTC has added its own HTC Hub (also available as a live tile) where you will find some old HTC favorites like applications and its animated clock and weather widget.

Meanwhile, AT&T has preloaded the smartphone with a number of its services, including AT&T U-verse Mobile, AT&T Navigator, AT&T Radio, and AT&T Family Map. Unlike on the carrier's other smartphones, you can actually uninstall any of the unwanted carrier apps--not just remove them from the Start menu but actually uninstall them. To do so, just select the app with a long press and choose the uninstall option. This is great news if you don't like all that bloatware tying up precious resources. Just note that if you hard-reset the phone, the apps will reinstall after the reboot.

Of course, you can download more apps from the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace. There are currently more than 18,000 apps in the catalog. Just be aware that the HTC HD7 has 16GB of internal memory but no expansion slot. This should be enough for most people, but if you've got a huge multimedia library or like to load up your phone with apps and games, keep an eye on your available memory.

The minimum camera requirement for Windows Phone 7 is 5 megapixels, and that's exactly what you get with the HTC HD7S. The camera settings include six different resolutions, effects, scenes, and flicker adjustment. HTC also offers a Photo Enhancer app--available as a free download from the HTC Hub or Windows Phone 7 Marketplace--with which you can touch up photos and add effects.


The smartphone's 5-megapixel camera didn't exactly knock our socks off.

HTC does a lot of things well, but one area where it really needs to improve is camera software. As we've seen on a number of the company's other smartphones, the HD7S' picture quality left much to be desired. Though we could make out the objects in the photos, the images looked flat with washed-out colors and a grayish overtone. The camera did slightly better with outdoor scenes, but also struggled in camcorder mode, as our 720p HD video clips looked discolored and murky.

Performance
We tested the quad-band HTC HD7S in New York using AT&T service, and call quality was an issue. Though our callers reported good results, we could hear a constant hissing in the background on our end. It wasn't bad enough that we couldn't hear voices, but it was noticeable and at times distracting.

Speakerphone quality was OK. The hissing was gone once we activated the speakerphone, and though slightly tinny the sound was clear. When volume was set to the highest level, it was just enough so we could hear our callers in a noisier environment. We had no problems pairing the smartphone with the Logitech Mobile Traveller Bluetooth headset and the Motorola S9 Bluetooth Active Headphones.

Using AT&T's 3G network, CNET's full site loaded in 40 seconds, while the mobile sites for CNN and ESPN came up in 5 seconds and 12 seconds. YouTube videos took a few seconds to load, but played back continuously after buffering.

With its 1GHz Snapdragon processor and NoDo performance improvements, the HTC HD7S proved to be a very capable performer during our test period. There was very little delay when launching apps and navigating through the menus. The load time for games was much faster than we saw on the first batch of Windows Phone devices, and gameplay was smooth.

The HTC HD7S ships with a 1,230mAh lithium ion battery with a rated talk time of 4.5 hours and up to 11 days of standby time. As we stated in our HD7 review, it's disappointing to see such a small battery in a larger device, but so far battery life hasn't been an issue. With moderate usage (checking e-mail and Facebook, few calls, and occasional browsing), we were able to get through a full work day before needing to recharge. We are still conducting our battery drain tests, and will update this section as soon as we have final results. According to FCC radiation tests, the HD7S has a digital SAR rating of 0.956W/kg and a Hearing Aid Compatibility Rating of M3.

Conclusions
The HTC HD7S delivers on many fronts, including a large, crisp display and fast performance. Unfortunately, the subpar camera and call quality prevent us from giving it a higher score. Unless you absolutely crave the larger screen, the Samsung Focus is still our top pick of AT&T's Windows Phone devices. The HTC HD7S will be available starting June 5 for $199.99 with a two-year contract.

LG Remarq - turquoise (Sprint)

The good: The LG Remarq has a petite and playful ergonomic design along with a great QWERTY keyboard. It is also built with environmentally friendly materials and offers a carbon footprint calculator.

The bad: The LG Remarq doesn't have good photo quality.

The bottom line: The LG Remarq is an adorable eco-friendly messaging phone at an affordable price.

Many handset companies are keen on showing their eco-friendly side these days, and LG is all too happy to join the movement with the LG Remarq. We first saw the Remarq at CTIA 2010, and it's a slider messenger that's made out of 19 percent recycled plastic. In addition, 87 percent of its parts are recyclable once you decide to get rid of it. It also apparently has low levels of both polyvinyl chloride and brominated flame retardants. We're impressed that LG took the time to make the packaging cardboard eco-friendly as well. Many handset companies are keen on showing their eco-friendly side these days, and LG is all too happy to join the movement with the LG Remarq. We first saw the Remarq at CTIA 2010, and it's a slider messenger that's made out of 19 percent recycled plastic. In addition, 87 percent of its parts are recyclable once you decide to get rid of it. It also apparently has low levels of both polyvinyl chloride and brominated flame retardants. We're impressed that LG took the time to make the packaging cardboard eco-friendly as well. Even the LG Remarq charger is energy-efficient with an Energy Star certification.

Aside from its eco-conscious features, the Remarq is a decent messaging phone. You won't get high-speed EV-DO here, but you do get a 1.3-megapixel camera, a music player, a microSD card slot, a speakerphone, and quick access to social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace. We also like its square design and the QWERTY keyboard feels great too. The LG Remarq is quite a steal, as it's available for free after a $50 mail-in rebate and a new two-year agreement with Sprint.

Design
The LG Remarq's short and squat design follows in the footsteps of many square slider phones before it, like the Samsung Reclaim and the Verizon Wireless Blitz. Some might not like this style of phone, but we have taken quite a shine to the cute and chubby form factor. Measuring 3.5 inches long by 2.5 inches wide by 0.6 inch thick, the Remarq has rounded corners, curved sides, and is decidedly compact. Wrapped in glossy hard plastic, the Remarq weighs around 3.8 ounces and feels surprising solid and sturdy in the hand despite its recycled ingredients.

On the front of it is a very attractive 2.2-inch display. It fits 220x176 pixels and has 262,000-color support, which result in crisp and colorful images and text. You can adjust the brightness, the backlight time, the appearance of the clock, calendar, and greeting text, the font size, and the screensaver. The Remarq supports animated wallpaper as well.

Underneath the display is the navigation array, which consists of two soft keys, a four-way square toggle with a middle Menu/OK key, a dedicated speakerphone key, a back key, a Talk key, and the End/Power key. The toggle also doubles as shortcuts to the message inbox, the browser, the My Stuff folder, and the My Photos album.

On the left is a 2.5mm headset jack, a volume rocker, and a microSD card slot, while the charger jack and camera key are on the right. On the back is the camera lens next to a leaf-shaped external speaker.

Slide the display up and you'll reveal a full four-row QWERTY keyboard. For such a petite phone, the keyboard is actually quite roomy. The keys are well-spaced apart and are raised above the surface for easy typing. The keyboard has the usual symbol and function keys, and we like that the spacebar and enter keys are larger than the rest. It also has a backlight.

Features
The LG Remarq has a 600-entry phone book, with room in each entry for six numbers, three e-mail addresses, a memo, a web URL, an instant messenger handle, a street address, a birthday, a job title, and a company name. You can also add a picture for photo caller ID, assign the entry to a caller group, or customize it with one of 23 ringtones or one of four vibration types. Other basic features include a vibrate mode, a speakerphone, an alarm clock, a calendar, a calculator, a unit converter, a tip calculator, a notepad, a world clock, and a stopwatch. The Remarq also has GPS with Sprint Navigation and Family Locator services, USB Mass Storage, voice command capabilities, a mobile Web browser, and stereo Bluetooth.

To further boost the Remarq's eco-friendly status, buried within the calculator submenu is a tool called the Eco Calculator. The tool helps you measure your carbon footprint by letting you know how many pounds of CO2 you would be decreasing depending on how many hours/miles you walked or cycled instead of driving. You can also measure it by how many plants that could be planted. It's a little gimmicky, but it might be of interest if you're especially conscious of your carbon usage.

Of course, you also get text and multimedia messaging along with a threaded view so you can see your conversation as a back-and-forth chat. You're able to get e-mail on here as well. You can set it up with a variety of Web mail providers like Gmail and Yahoo Mail, as well as your own POP or IMAP server. In fact, you can access your work e-mail on here as well, provided your employer uses Microsoft Exchange and Outlook Web Access (OWA). Instant messaging is available as well.

In addition to the Web browser, the Remarq has a few social networking applications installed by default. They include Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and Sprint's own Social Zone, which provides access to forums like Asian Avenue. Sprint did a decent job with these Java-based apps, but we did find that they took a little too long to launch for our liking. You can easily update your status and upload pictures with these apps, just like you can on the regular Web site versions.

The Remarq has a music player we've seen on other Sprint phones before. You can organize songs by artists, albums, and genres, and you can also create and edit playlists on the fly. Of course there are the usual player controls as well as repeat and shuffle modes. You can send the player to the background while fiddling with other parts of the phone. There's no EV-DO on here, so you won't be able to download music from the Sprint Music Store. However you can upload your own music--the Remarq has an internal memory of 22MB, but you can fit up to 16GB microSD cards in it.

The 1.3-megapixel camera can take pictures in three resolutions and three quality settings. Other settings include four color tones, brightness, five white balance presets plus a manual option, nine fun frames, zoom (not available in highest resolution), and a self-timer. Photo quality was pretty bad. Images looked blurry and washed out, even under good lighting conditions. The Remarq does not have a camcorder.

You can customize the Remarq with graphics and ringtones from the Sprint web store, or you can use your own images and sound files for wallpaper and ringtones. The phone doesn't come with any games, but you can easily purchase and download those as well.

Performance
We tested the LG Remarq (CDMA 800/1900) in San Francisco using the Sprint network. Call quality was decent on the whole, but not great. We heard our callers clearly without a problem, though we did notice the occasional static blip. Their voices sounded natural as well.

On their end, callers had a few more hiccups. Though they heard us fine for the most part, they complained about a faint but persistent background hum. When we turned on the speakerphone, the hum was much more apparent. Overall though, we could still carry on a conversation, so it was merely an annoyance, and not a deal breaker.

Audio quality from the phone's speakers was predictably tinny and mediocre. We would suggest a wired or stereo Bluetooth headset for the best audio experience.

The LG Remarq has a rated battery life of 5.5 hours talk time. It has an average tested talk time of 5 hours and 39 minutes. According to the FCC, it has a digital SAR of 1.22 watts per kilogram.

Sagem Puma Phone

The good: The Puma Phone offers a user-friendly interface, an attractive design, and a nice selection of sports-themed apps. Call quality is decent, and the solar panel can deliver an emergency charge.

The bad: The Puma Phone's GSM and 3G bands are optimized for the North American market. Call volume was rather low, and the touch screen is small and occasionally inaccurate.

The bottom line: We'd change a few things about the Puma Phone, but it delivers a fun user experience that no phone can match. Just make your area has the proper coverage and enough sun.

Last year at Mobile World Congress, one of the most-talked-about cell phones at the show occupied a small red pavilion plastered with Puma's logo. Yes, you heard us correctly; a company otherwise known for shoes and sportswear competed with the likes of HTC and Sony Ericsson to offer a device that everyone wanted to see.

Corporate-themed phones are nothing new, so it wasn't the Puma name that gave the handset such novelty. Instead, the Puma phone's appeal stemmed from its solar panel, a fun design, and a quirky selection of sports-themed apps. Though it remains unlikely that the handset will ever make it to a U.S. carrier, we tracked down an unlocked model to see if the finished product lived up to the hype. Now, after a few days of testing, we can report that it does. The Puma Phone isn't a powerful, feature-laden smartphone by any means, but it offers a unique and enjoyable user experience not many handsets can match. We have a couple of complaints about the small display, but call quality is satisfying, and the solar panel lets you top off the handset's battery.

Design
From the start, you'll notice that the Puma phone is a bit different. A silver Puma logo sits just above the screen, and red stripes and an angled line below the calling controls give it a bit of style. The handset measures 4.01 inches long by 2.25 inches wide by 0.5 inch deep and weighs 4.1 ounces. Its construction feels solid, even if the polished skin is a tad slippery.

The 2.8-inch display TFT display supports 262,000 colors and 240x320 pixels. Though it's not as vibrant as most current touch-screen phones, it's bright enough and it fits the Puma Phone's sporty and functional image. You can switch between red and black backgrounds, adjust the brightness, and change the screen lock time.

The handset offers three home screens. At the far left is a menu for the sports apps, and the far right contains the remaining productivity and media features. Both home screens use an intuitive grid design with icons. The Settings menu is a little harder to find, but you'll soon notice a tab at the bottom-right corner that takes you there.

Between the two menus is a Favorites home screen that you can populate with your top apps. To place them there, just press and hold the icon until it floats over. You'll also find a pull-down bar at the top that offers instant access to your message and voice mail notifications, the phone's available memory, and the battery level. You also can activate the flight and silent modes, the Bluetooth and GPS features, and the alarm clock. It all feels very Android-like, even though Google's OS does not power the Puma Phone.

Below the display are the Talk and End buttons; the latter also functions as the Back key and the power control. Though they're flush with the surface of the handset, these controls give an audible click when pressed. Between them is a Home button that will take you back to the favorites menu when pressed once. Press it twice, however, and you'll call up the "Dylan," the animated puma that serves as the phone's mascot. His only role is to keep you entertained, and he succeeds at that. If you keep tapping the display, for example, he will change positions and move around. But if you leave him alone, he will disappear. Yes, it is a bit gimmicky, but we think it's cheeky and cool.

The display is responsive even if you can't change the sensitivity. It wasn't always accurate, however, particularly when we were tapping at smaller onscreen controls. Swiping through long menus was a bit better, though the phone had a slight lag.


The virtual keyboard is tiny.

The phone dialer has a standard design with large numbers, though it's odd that the keys aren't alphanumeric. As a result, you may need to glance at another phone when dialing 800 numbers that use letters. For typing the Puma Phone has two virtual keyboards. In portrait mode it's alphanumeric, but when you tip the handset to the left it will switch to full alphabetic. Both keyboards are pretty small, though, so we wouldn't recommend long diatribes. The Puma Phone does not have a proximity sensor.


The solar panel takes up almost all of the phone's rear side. Just above are the camera lens, flash, and self-portrait mirror.

On the Puma Phone's left side you'll find the Micro-USB port for the syncing cable and the standard wall charger. Unfortunately, it also accommodates the wired headset that comes in the eco-friendly cardboard box. On the left side are the volume rocker and camera shutter. Both are large and user-friendly. The rear side is dominated by the solar panel, but there's room up top for the camera lens and flash (a second camera lens is around front for video calling). You have to remove the battery cover to access the microSD card slot.

Features
The Echo's phone book size is limited by the available memory (64MB), which is shared with other applications. Each entry holds just two phone numbers, but you can add fields for an e-mail, a birthday, a nickname, and notes. For caller ID you can pair contacts with a photo and one of seven ringtones. The selection is pretty unusual; there's just one melody, with the rest being animal sounds like a cat's meow, an eagle's screech, a puma's roar, and a tiger's growl.

Essential features include a calendar, an alarm clock, a calculator, Bluetooth, GPS, PC syncing, and USB mass storage. When using the latter two features, our PC instantly recognized the Puma Phone when we connected the two using a USB cable. You'll also be able to access an electronic user guide and quick start manual and transfer files aback and forth. For security purposes, you can lock the Puma Phone with a PIN lock or an onscreen pattern.

For written communication, the handset supports text and multimedia messaging and most POP3 IMPA4 e-mail accounts (like Yahoo and Gmail) through a Web-based interface. You also get video calling, though we weren't able to try it, and three games. Bubble Tap, for example, lets you pop virtual bubble wrap, and Spin the Bottle shows an onscreen bottle that you can spin with your finger.

As mentioned, the Puma Phone offers several apps that focus on sports and recreation. Onboard are a stopwatch, a countdown timer, a compass, an RSS feed for sites like BBC Sports, and a run and bike tracker that uses the handset's GPS capabilities. An "egg timer" is one of the most unusual features we've seen on a phone, but we like the hourglass interface. The camera flash also doubles as a bright flashlight if you hold down the shutter key.

The camera takes pictures in four resolutions, from 3.1 megapixels down to QVGA. Other features include a self-timer, three quality settings, four exposure modes, and four color effects. The flash will help brighten dim places, and you can switch to the front camera for self-portraits. The camcorder records clips with sound. Editing options are limited to just the four color effects, but you can record for as long as the available memory permits.


The Puma Phone has acceptable photo quality.

Photo quality is pretty decent for a 3-megapixel shooter. There was a bit of image noise and the edges of photos looked a little blurry, but colors were bright, and we had enough light even when indoors. All your shots are stored in a media gallery in which you can view them as a slideshow.

The music player comes with mostly standard features like shuffle, loop, and 3D sound. It was easy to load music on the phone via a USB cable or memory card, and you can also send media via Bluetooth, e-mail, or a multimedia message. Aspiring DJs can use the "record" scratch feature that let you play songs while swiping a virtual record. It's fun for about 5 minutes. The Puma Phone also has an FM radio, though you'll need to use the wired headset as an antenna.

The WAP 2.0 browser is nothing special, so we wouldn't recommend the Puma Phone for the always-online set. You will have to use mobile sites, and the experience just felt a little clunky. You can access the Puma World portal for more Web content.

Performance
We tested the tri-band (GSM 900/1800/1900; EDGE) Puma Phone using AT&T service. Keep in mind that since the Puma Phone lacks one of the GSM bands used in North America (850), you'll have to depend solely on the 1900 frequency when calling in the United States and Canada. As a result, your reception will vary according to you location and the carrier that you're using (the handset will work on T-Mobile as well). As a general rule, the 850 band is used only as a backup in urban areas (where 1900 is more prevalent), but it is the primary band in rural areas, especially for AT&T. If you stick mainly to the city you shouldn't have a problem, but coverage will vary as you travel outside populated areas.

That's why call quality was decent when we used the Puma Phone in San Francisco. Voices sounded slightly metallic at times, but on the whole our friends sounded natural. Volume could have been louder, though it was sufficient for most places. Only when we were calling from a crowded room was it difficult to hear. The signal also remained strong with only a slight hint of static.

Reports from the other end were mostly positive. Our friends could tell that we were using a cell phone, but the audio was clear and natural. They also mentioned a trace of static and said the volume was low. In fact, it does appear that the Puma Phone's microphone is a tad sensitive. Our callers could hear us when we held the phone close, but our friends said the volume level dropped significantly if we moved the phone even slightly away. It was the same story with automated calling systems: no serious issues as long as we called from a quiet room. The speakerphone is adequately clear, but it could be louder as well.

Data coverage also is subject to restrictions. Since it supports only the 3G bands used in Europe (HSDPA 900/2100), you will be stuck on EDGE at home. Five years ago, EDGE would have been fine, but it's pretty unbearable these days.

Unfortunately, it was cloudy and occasionally rainy during the two days we used to review the phone so we never made it outside to give it a natural charge. Unlike the Samsung Blue Earth, the Puma Phone's solar panels don't kick in under a desk lamp or interior lighting. Also, it barely registered a charge when we placed it in a sunny window.

To really test the solar panel, we took the Puma Phone on a weekend trip to Las Vegas. Naturally, abundant sun greeted us in the desert, including during an afternoon at the pool. When we started the test, the Puma Phone's battery level was at 48 percent. After about an hour and a couple phone calls, it climbed to about 57 percent. Granted, that's not a lot, but the solar panel does deliver a steady power source while the phone is in standby mode.

On that note, keep in mind that the solar panel is really meant for topping off the phone rather than delivering a full charge. As we said in our Blue Earth review, the panels don't work when the phone is completely dead, so you can't abandon the wall charger completely. Instead, use an electrical outlet for delivering your daily juice and use the sun for an extra zap when you're on the go. Lastly, remember that leaving a gadget in the hot sun is never a good idea.

In other battery quirks, the Puma Phone replaces the normal battery meter with words like "Full" (completely charged), "Happy (mostly charged), "Hungry" (no charge), and "Feeding" (charging) to describe the power level. You also can click through to a separate screen to see the number of messages sent, calling minutes used, and music played as powered by the sun.

The Puma Phone has a rated battery life of up to 5 hours talk time on 3G and 3.5 hours on EDGE. The promised standby time is 16.6 days, and music time should take you to 25 hours. According to FCC radiation tests, the Puma Phone has a digital SAR of 1.24 watts per kilogram.

Conclusion
You may call the phone gimmicky, but we think it succeeds since it pretends to be nothing else than what it really is. From the start, the Puma has sold the phone as a fun device that offers a unique and sporty user experience. And when you evaluate the handset on those claims alone, there is a lot to like.

It's true, however, that the Puma Phone is a study in contrasts. It's not long on features, but it offers enough quirky apps beyond the basics to keep you occupied. The small display can be frustrating at times, but a simple interface and an eye-catching design give it appeal. And finally, though the volume could be louder, audio clarity was good, and the solar panel should deliver extra juice. The unlocked Puma Phone isn't available with a carrier in the United States, but you can get from third-party retailers like Expansys.com for an affordable $129.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini - white

The good: The Sony Ericsson X10 Mini has a user-friendly interface and a solid feature set for such a small phone.

The bad: The Sony Ericsson X10 Mini lacks camera editing options and its small size can hamper usability. The volume level is rather low.

The bottom line: The Xperia X10 Mini packs a lot of features into a small design. The compact touch screen won't be for everyone, but it mostly satisfies as an Android phone.

As Android continues to expand, most handset manufacturers are pushing the envelope of just how big a smartphone can go. HTC's recent Evo 4G sports a record-breaking 4.3-inch display and Motorola countered with the equally expansive Droid X. But not everyone is jumping on the "go big" trend. Shortly after it introduced its massive Xperia X10, Sony Ericsson decided to trim the handset rather than enlarging it even further. It was a curious move, and when we first handled the Xperia X10 Mini at the 2010 Mobile World Congress, we were skeptical that Sony Ericsson could pull it off.

Now that we've spent time with the X10 Mini, we're a bit more confident. It's still too small for our use, but we realize that other people may appreciate the compact purse and pocket-friendly size. Sony Ericsson's User Experience interface remains accessible and attractive, performance is mostly respectable, and we're glad that the X10 Mini doesn't cut too many features to save space. On the downside, we still have our misgivings about Timescape and we miss a full QWERTY keyboard, but you can get the latter with the X10 Mini Pro. The unlocked X10 Mini should cost about $350.

Design
"Small" is the first thing that comes to mind when holding the X10 Mini. At 3.3 inches long by 2 inches wide by 0.6 inch deep, its size is more akin to a prepaid handset than a feature-packed Android smartphone. It's so small that it fits squarely in your hand and it could even get lost in a large bag. What's more, at 3.1 ounces, you might even forget that it's in your pocket.

Of course, the small body means that the display is equally minute. Though it has a rich resolution (16.7 million colors; 320x240 pixels), it measures just 2.5 inches. On a standard phone that's fine, but it's another story on a touch-screen handset where the display is the primary interface. It's convenient for scrolling through the menus and most basic features, but you use an alphanumeric keypad for dialing numbers and typing messages. We also found that other features like the Facebook app and the Timescape feature don't look their best on such a tiny display.

To be fair, we get what Sony Ericsson is trying to do here, and we respect its efforts to offer customers an Android handset that won't weigh them down. On the upside, the touch interface is quick and responsive, and Sony Ericsson manages to surface a lot of options up front. After several hours of use, however, we grew tired of pecking away at something smaller than a credit card. Also, because the accelerometer only works in select applications (mostly the media options), we weren't able to use the landscape orientation to its full advantage. We realize that you may feel differently, but the X10 Mini is just too small for us.

Below the display are physical controls for accessing the main menu, the home screen menu, and moving backward through a menu. On the right spine you'll find a volume rocker, and a camera shutter. They're a little thin for our tastes, but you can find the rocker when you're on a call. The power control sits on the top of the phone and the 3.5mm headset jack and Micro-USB charger port rest on the bottom. We thank Sony Ericsson for ditching its proprietary connections.

On the back of the phone are the camera lens and flash. They're in a convenient place as long as you remember to keep your fingers out of the way when snapping a photo. The microSD card slot is stashed behind the battery cover, but we realize that Sony Ericsson had few alternatives on such a small phone.

Interface and Timescape
As mentioned, the X10 Mini offers Sony Ericsson's User Experience (UXP) interface, albeit on a smaller and slightly revamped scale. You can find a full description in our related slideshow or in the X10 review, but we'll recap the highpoints here. On the home screen you'll find four feature shortcuts in each corner of the display. Touch a corner and you'll jump instantly to the related feature (messaging, the music player, the phone dialer, and the phonebook). It's a nifty and user-friendly touch. The main menu is accessible via the arrow at the bottom of the screen. Due to the screen's small size, you'll need to cycle through multiple menu pages, but that's a minor point.

In standard Android fashion you can populate the home screens with folders, shortcuts, and widgets. It's important to note that UXP masks the standard Android interface to some degree. Normally, we prefer that manufacturers let Android be Android, but we approve of Sony Ericsson's subtle and attractive touches here. On the other hand, we don't like it when a custom interface interferes with Android updates. Indeed, the X10 Mini remains stuck on Android 1.6 even months after 2.0's release.

Like its big brother, the X10 Mini features Sony Ericsson's Timescape feature, which displays your latest e-mails, text messages, and social media alerts (Facebook, Twitter) in a flowing design that resembles a stacked deck of cards. The concept is very similar to MotoBlur in that it combines all of your e-mails, messages, contacts, and their status updates into a steady stream of information. As we've said earlier, it can be a bit much, and it's even more overwhelming on a smaller display (see the X10 for more information).

Contacts and calendar
The X10's phonebook size is limited by the available memory. As on other Android phones, you can add multiple fields per contact plus a photo and a ringtone. You can save contacts to groups and sync them with various Google services.

The calendar app has the UXP skin, but it still has the basic Android design. Of course, you can sync with your Gmail calendar after you register your Google account. If you don't have a Google account, you can create one right on the phone. You also can sync contacts and the calendar with the Sony Ericsson Sync service.

E-mail and messaging
Besides Gmail and the usual text and multimedia messaging, the X10 Mini is capable of syncing with POP3 and some IMAP4 accounts. It's disappointing, however, that like on the X10 we weren't able to add our CNET Outlook Web Access account (OWA) using the standard e-mail app. Instead, you must the included RoadSync app to get both your e-mail messages and calendar appointments. The experience might be better, but we'd appreciate a native app.


The X10 Mini doesn't have a full QWERTY keyboard.

Without a full QWERTY you must use a nine-button alphabetic keypad for composing messages. Also, since the X10 Mini's keyboard only works in portrait mode you must scroll quite a ways through the symbols keyboard to find basic punctuation. On a basic phone we wouldn't complain about the experience, but we find it unacceptable on a smartphone. Fortunately, the X10 Mini offers a useful predictive text option that's a good alternative to multitap.

Media
The X10 Mini's replaces the X10's 8-megapixel camera for a 5-megapixel shooter. We don't mind the resolution downgrade--5 megapixels is more than adequate on such a handset--but we are disturbed that Sony Ericsson removed most of the editing options. You can geotag photos, use the bright flash and autofocus, and select one of four image settings (auto, sports, twilight, and macro), but those are the only customization options available. Though we'd expected the smaller X10 Mini to offer fewer features, we didn't foresee this much carnage. Also, vanity shots are tricky without a self-portrait mirror.

The handset has a camcorder, though editing options are equally minimal. Clips meant for multimedia messages are capped at 10 seconds, though you can shoot for longer in normal mode. Once you're done playing photographer, you can check out your work in the user-friendly gallery app. Photo quality is just average, which is about what we saw on the X10. Colors could have been richer, and images are a tad dim. The X10 Mini offers 128MB of internal memory and the microSD slot fits cards up to 2GB.

On both the X10 and X10 Mini, Sony Ericsson gave the normal Android music player a slight, but much-needed, makeover. It displays album art, and you can access shuffle and repeat modes, set favorites, send the track in a message, and designate a track as a ringtone. Loading music on the phone is quite easy whether you're using a USB cable or a memory card. Thanks to Android's efficient USB transfer/storage and PC syncing support, our PC recognized the X10 Mini right when we plugged it in. The handset also comes integrated with Sony Ericsson's PlayNow feature, a TrackID app and an FM radio.

Music quality is similar to the X10, though it's not quite as loud given the X10 Mini's smaller speaker. The quality is respectable, though it gets distorted the higher you go. We recommend headphones for the best experience.

Google and other features
Other features include a calculator, a calendar, an alarm clock, a notepad, a full duplex speakerphone, a timer, and a stopwatch. You'll also find PC syncing, USB mass storage, A2DP stereo Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. The browser has a standard Android design, though it's more than tedious on such a small display. You can replace it with another browser, if you'd like.

Naturally, the X10 Mini offers the full slate of Google applications like YouTube, Google Voice, and Google Talk. Google Maps offers the standard features while Wisepilot brings real-time voice-guided directions. You'll also find a barcode reader, a Wikipedia app, and two games (Peggle and Edge). Of course, more apps and games are available through the Android Market. The integrated Facebook for Android app lets you access the service outside of Timescape.

Performance
We tested the quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) Xperia X10 Mini in San Francisco using AT&T service. The handset will work with both AT&T's and T-Mobile's GSM networks, but 3G data is available only through AT&T in the United States. You should have better luck abroad since the X10 Mini supports three UMTS/HSPA bands.

Call quality was respectable, though we encountered a couple of issues. Though signal clarity is decent and our friends sounded natural, the audio cut out for a second on more than one occasion. Also, the volume was much too low to talk in a noisy place. On the whole it was a good experience, but it wasn't quite as sharp as the Xperia X10.

Our callers said we sounded fine. They also reported a volume issue, particularly when we were calling next to a busy street. They didn't hear any audio lapses, though, and our friends said that the phone picked up minimal background noise. Almost everyone could tell that we were using a cell phone, but that's hardly a bad thing. We didn't have a problem when calling automated calling systems as long as we were in a quiet place. Speakerphone calls were satisfactory, though the volume remained too low for many calls.

The X10 Mini has a 600Mhz processor, so expect a slower experience than the 1GHz-powered Xperia X10. Yet, the change isn't dramatic, as we were able to perform most functions quickly. And in any case, the downgrade is understandable on a smaller and cheaper phone.

The X10 Mini has a rated battery life of 4 hours 2G talk time and 3.5 hours 3G talk time. Promised standby time is 15 days. According to FCC radiation charts, the X10 Mini has a digital SAR of 1.18 watts per kilogram.

T-Mobile G2

The good: The T-Mobile G2 boasts a premium design and easy-to-use QWERTY keyboard. It's the first smartphone to support T-Mobile's HSPA+ network, and offers speedy performance and good call quality. It ships running Android 2.2 with the stock Android interface.

The bad: The G2 doesn't offer tethering or mobile hot spot capabilities. We have some concerns about the slider hinge.

The bottom line: Some minor issues aside, the T-Mobile G2 is one of the carrier's top Android smartphones, offering an excellent QWERTY keyboard, speed, and plenty of features.

With all the Android devices that have come out in the past year, it's surprising that the T-Mobile G1, the first Android phone to ever hit the market, is just now getting a successor. After all, it's been two years since the G1 debuted, which is an eternity in the tech world. However, the T-Mobile G2 (also known as the HTC Desire Z overseas) was worth the wait with its premium design, outstanding keyboard, and fast performance. With all the Android devices that have come out in the past year, it's surprising that the T-Mobile G1, the first Android phone to ever hit the market, is just now getting a successor. After all, it's been two years since the G1 debuted, which is an eternity in the tech world. However, the T-Mobile G2 (also known as the HTC Desire Z overseas) was worth the wait with its premium design, outstanding keyboard, and fast performance. It's also the first smartphone to support T-Mobile's HSPA+ network, which delivered impressive speeds. Sure, we have our quibbles, but for T-Mobile customers looking for a more high-end device or a purer Android experience than the Samsung Vibrant or the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G Slide, should definitely check out the G2. The T-Mobile G2 is available for $199.99 with a two-year contract at T-Mobile stores, as well as other electronic retailers including Best Buy and Radio Shack.

Design
Let's be honest. The T-Mobile G1 wasn't much of a stunner in the looks department, and though we wouldn't necessarily classify the T-Mobile G2 as sexy, the smartphone's design is a huge improvement over its predecessor. At 4.68 inches tall by 2.37 inches wide by 0.55 inch thick and 6.5 ounces, the G2 isn't the most compact or lightweight device, but without the chin, it's easier to slip into a pants pocket. The overall look of the phone is clean and very professional, but what's striking about the handset is its build quality. The G2 features stainless-steel parts and a soft-touch finish, and when you hold the phone in your hand, it feels like you're getting a premium device and not something plasticky or cheap.


In hand, the T-Mobile G2 has a very high-quality feel to it.

The G2 features a 3.7-inch WVGA Super TFT capacitive touch screen. It's not quite as vivid as the Super AMOLED displays that grace Samsung's Galaxy S phones, but it's still gorgeous and bright. Images and video look great, and text was easy to read. The display also has a proximity sensor, a built-in accelerometer, and pinch-to-zoom support, all of which were responsive during our testing.

The G2 offers both the Android keyboard and Swype, but you also have a four-row QWERTY keyboard at your disposal, and it's quite a good one. The raised buttons are a decent size with enough spacing between them to minimize mispresses. Though we love Swype, we found the keyboard so easy to use that we found ourselves using it for most tasks, even sending short text messages. There's also a dedicated button for the www./.com extensions, as well as three "quick keys" on the bottom row, which you can assign to open specific apps.

All that said, there is one aspect of the G2's design that bothers us a bit, and that's the slider hinge. The sliding mechanism itself is very smooth, and the screen locks securely into place. However, as some early users have discovered, it doesn't always stay in place. It's unclear whether this is happening on every device, but when the G2 is held upside down, the screen drops down. It happened on our review unit after a few hours of use, but granted, you're not going to be holding your phone in that position; we wouldn't say it's a deal breaker, but still, we'd prefer if it stayed shut. We're also a little weary at how the hinge will hold up after an extended period of use, but T-Mobile said that it put the G2 through rigorous testing and passed, so we'll see.

There are a number of other controls on the phone. Below the display, you'll find the standard Android shortcuts--home, menu, back, and search--as well as an optical trackpad. On the left side, there's a volume rocker and Micro-USB port and a camera activation/capture key on the right spine. The top of the device features a 3.5mm headphone jack and a power button, and the camera and flash are located on the back.

The T-Mobile G2 comes packaged with an AC adapter, a USB cable, an 8GB microSD card, a wired stereo headset, and reference material.

Features
The T-Mobile G2 is quite a feature-packed smartphone, but one aspect that sets it apart from the rest of the pack is the fact that it's T-Mobile's first HSPA+ smartphone. HSPA+ is an evolution of the carrier's 3G network, and though not technically 4G, T-Mobile is promising 4G-like speeds with theoretical peak speeds of 14.4Mbps. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that the network isn't widely available. Currently, T-Mobile has rolled out its HSPA+ network to 65 major metropolitan cities, including the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Houston, and Seattle, and reaches 100 million people. The carrier said it plans to expand its footprint to 100 major metropolitan cities by the end of the year. You can check for your city on T-Mobile's coverage map.

Luckily, we were able to test out the network here in Manhattan, and we have to say the speeds were quite impressive. We downloaded Ookla's Speedtest.net app from the Android Market to our G2 to clock download and upload speeds, and we averaged 3.89Mbps down, peaking at 5.18Mbps, and 1.28Mbps up. By comparison, Sprint's 4G network provided average download speeds of 3.42Mbps and upload speeds of 0.93Mbps on the HTC Evo 4G.

In more real-world testing, the mobile sites for CNN and ESPN came up in 5 seconds and 3 seconds, respectively, whereas CNET's full page loaded in just 19 seconds. With support for Adobe Flash Player 10.1, we were also able to get CNET TV videos to play. We downloaded the Pandora app in 7 seconds and a track from Amazon's MP3 Store in 15 seconds. YouTube videos buffered in just a couple of seconds, and even high-quality videos loaded within a few seconds and played back without interruption. With such swift speeds, it's really a shame that the tethering and Wi-Fi hot spot capabilities have been disabled on the G2.

Hopefully, T-Mobile will activate the feature at some point in the future since it's a built-in function of Android 2.2, which is what the G2 is running on, along with the stock Android skin. Though we have no problem with customized UIs--as long as they're useful and don't impede on future updates--we also love the standard Android experience for its pureness and clean look.

Aside from the Froyo features outlined in our article here, the G2 also comes preloaded with a number of Google services, more than other Android smartphones on the market. Aside from the staples--Gmail, Google Maps, Google Talk, and YouTube--you also get Google Voice, Voice Actions, Google Earth, Google Translate, Google Finance, and Google Listen, among others. This is all well and good, but unfortunately, you can't remove or uninstall these apps, which is annoying, especially since they take up some of the phone's 4GB of internal memory.

As a phone, the G2 offers quad-band world roaming, a speakerphone, conference calling, voice dialing, text and multimedia messaging, and in addition to HSPA+ support, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 3G, and GPS. The phone book is limited only by the available memory (the SIM card holds an additional 250 contacts), and there's room in each entry for multiple numbers, e-mail addresses, IM handles, group IDs, photo caller IDs, and so on. The G2 can be set up to pull and merge contact information, calendar appointments, and messages from multiple e-mail and social networking accounts, including Exchange, POP3, IMAP, Facebook, and Twitter.

The G2's multimedia capabilities are pretty standard. The media player isn't quite as robust as the Samsung Vibrant's, but it supports your most basic music and video codecs, offers the essential playback features, and comes bundled with DoubleTwist syncing software. The phone comes preinstalled with a 8GB microSD card, but it can accept up to 32GB cards, if you have a larger multimedia library.

Last but not least, the smartphone is equipped with a 5-megapixel camera, which is capable of HD video capture. Despite having an LED flash, the picture quality on our standard indoor shot was a little dull and fuzzy, as was our test HD video. The camera did much better on photos taken outdoors, however.

Performance
We tested the quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) T-Mobile G2 in New York, and call quality was great. We enjoyed clear-sounding calls with very little background noise and voice distortion. We also didn't experience any dropped calls during our testing period, and we had no problem using an airline's voice-automated response system. Friends were also pleased with the performance on their end. There were a couple mentions of some slight tinniness, but overall, no major complaints.

Speakerphone quality was pretty much what we expected: slightly hollow, but clear and loud enough to hold a conversation, even in louder environments. We were able to pair and make calls using the Logitech Mobile Traveller Bluetooth headset and Motorola S9 Bluetooth Active Headphones with no problem. The G2 also supports voice dialing over Bluetooth.

In terms of general performance, many were quick to dismiss the G2 because of the fact it had an 800MHz processor instead of a 1GHz processor like many of today's smartphones, but don't let the numbers fool you. The G2's next-gen Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM7230 processor does just fine at keeping the handset on task. We experienced very little to no delay during our review periods, regardless of what task we threw at it.

The G2 ships with a 1,300mAh lithium ion battery with a rated talk time of 6.5 hours and up to 17.5 days of standby time. The G2 met the rated talk time in our battery drain tests. Anecdotally, we were able to get a full day's worth of use from the smartphone before having to charge the battery. According to FCC radiation tests, the G2 has a digital SAR rating of 1.31 watts per kilogram.

The good: The Motorola Brute i686 has a very rugged and durable design, plus a decent feature set that includes push-to-talk, GPS, and a 2-megapixel camera. Call quality is very impressive.

The bad: The Motorola Brute i686 is only very slightly different from its predecessor, the Brute i680. There's no external camera shutter button, photo quality is average at best, and we wish there were a 3.5mm headset jack.

The bottom line: The Motorola Brute i686 can take a longer dunk in water, but is otherwise identical to the Brute i680. It's not the prettiest phone on the block, but it's incredibly durable with great call quality to boot.

When we first looked at the Motorola Brute i686, we wondered if there was a mistake. It seemed practically identical to the Motorola Brute i680, its predecessor. Even the overall features are similar--the 2-megapixel camera, GPS, Bluetooth, and of course, support for Nextel's iDEN network.

If you already have the Brute i680, we wouldn't encourage you to run out and buy the i686, but if you've been looking for a tough phone that'll survive a diving trip or two, then this might be for you. The Motorola Brute i686 is available for $119.99 with a two-year contract from Sprint Nextel.

Design
As we mentioned in the introduction, the Motorola Brute i686 hardly differs from its predecessor. At 3.92 inches long by 2.09 inches wide by 1 inch thick, the Brute i686 is just as bulky, and at 5.63 ounces, it's just as heavy. It's clad in hard plastic and a thick rubber exterior that protects it from all manner of scrapes and bruises. Indeed, we dropped it onto concrete and dunked it in a sink of water for a solid 20 minutes without ill effects. The Brute i686 is said to be military-certified under specification 810G for resistance to dust, shock, vibration, extreme temperatures, low pressure, salt fog, humidity, and more.

On the front is a color external display that supports 65,000 colors and 160x120-pixel resolution. We're glad to see that it supports photo caller ID and recent call history, and it'll also work as a self-portrait viewfinder when the camera is activated. As for the camera, that sits right on top of the display, next to the LED flash.

The left spine is home to the volume rocker and push-to-talk button, both of which are large and easy to find by feel. On the right is the Micro-USB charger jack hidden securely beneath a rubber flap. On the top of the Brute i686 are the speakerphone control and the usual Nextel button for accessing your recent calls list. Also on the top is a 2.5-millimeter headset jack protected by a rubber flap. We would've liked to see a 3.5mm headset jack, however. We also would have preferred a camera shutter control on the sides.

To keep the phone nice and dry on the inside, the battery cover is secured by a round locking mechanism that you can unlock with either a fingernail or a penny. Behind the battery cover is the microSD card slot.

Flip the phone open and you'll find a simple but legible 2.2-inch color display. It only supports 65,000 colors and 220x176-pixel resolution, but as you aren't likely to use this phone for multimedia purposes too often, we didn't mind the average resolution. Colors are bright enough, and we like that we can change the text size and the backlight timer. Along the bottom row of the display is a series of shortcuts to frequently accessed applications or functions that you can toggle through. The main menu itself is displayed in either a grid or list view.

The navigation array consists of the usual two soft keys, a round toggle with a middle select key, a main menu key, a camera key, and the Send and End/Power keys. The overall keypad is spacious, with enough separation between each key. We found it easy to text and dial with the raised keys as well.

Features
The features on the Brute i686 are similar to the Brute i680, so forgive us if there's a little bit of deja vu here. To start, the Brute i686 has a 600-contact phone book with room in each entry for seven phone numbers, an e-mail address, and notes. You can categorize those contacts into groups, and also into push-to-talk groups if you're on Nextel's Direct Connect service. You can also pair the contacts with a photo and one of 20 polyphonic ringtones for caller identification. The Brute i686's Direct Connect features include International Direct Connect, Group Connect, and Direct Talk.

The i686 is a phone first and foremost, with simple features like a vibrate mode, a speakerphone, a memo pad, text and multimedia messaging, call timers, an alarm clock, and a datebook. For the slightly more advanced user, there's stereo Bluetooth, an application manager, USB mass storage, a voice recorder, voice playback when browsing menus, and PC syncing. There's also GPS with support for Sprint's TeleNav service.

Even though the i686 is a relatively basic phone, it does have a few multimedia options. These include a music player, which has the usual album art and player track controls. You can customize it to a certain extent with themes and visualizations. You do get basic features like shuffle, repeat, and even an equalizer. You can load music onto the phone via a USB cable or a microSD card. The phone only takes cards of up to 8GB, which is rather stingy.


The Motorola i686 takes only average-quality photos.

The 2-megapixel camera is unchanged from the Brute i680. It can take pictures in seven resolutions and two quality settings. Other camera options include exposure control, white balance, a 4x digital zoom, a self-timer, geotagging, a macro mode, autofocus, four color effects, and a couple of shutter sounds. Photo quality is fair. Shots were not as sharp as we would like, and colors were unfortunately quite dim and washed out. There's also a built-in camcorder with similar editing options. You can shoot clips for 1 minute for MMS messages or longer in storage mode.

The Brute i686 comes with a few Sprint apps like Nascar Sprint Cup Mobile and NFL Live, but that's about it. You can always get more apps, games, graphics, and ringtones from the Sprint store via the WAP 2.0 browser.

Performance
We tested the Motorola Brute i686 in San Francisco using the Sprint Nextel service. As is the case with most of our Nextel phones, call quality was very impressive. Audio was crystal clear, as if our callers were right next to us. Callers sounded very natural, and there was little to no background noise.

On their end, callers too reported great audio quality. They said we sounded very loud and clear, and we were interrupted by very little static, if any. Reception was overall quite reliable, and the speakerphone quality was stellar as well.

We tested the Brute i686 with another i686 for Direct Connect calls. There was a slight audible distortion at times, but that seems to be the case with most push-to-talk calls. Otherwise, audio quality was great--loud, clear, with very good noise reduction.

The Brute i686 has a rated battery life of 5.8 hours. According to FCC radiation tests, the Brute i686 has a digital SAR of 0.59 watt per kilogram.

Motorola Droid X (Verizon Wireless)

The good: The Motorola Droid X boasts a gorgeous 4.3-inch touch screen and great multimedia features like an 8-megapixel camera with HD video capture, HDMI output, and DLNA support. The smartphone can also be used as a mobile hot spot.

The bad: Camera is a bit sluggish. Motoblur software is a lot better but still not quite as refined as HTC Sense. Lacks a front-facing camera.

The bottom line: The Motorola Droid X makes another fine addition to Verizon's Android family, bringing with it a rich multimedia experience and more connectivity features.

However, when you're introducing devices like the Motorola Droid X, we can see why they would be so bold.

The Droid X is the latest member to join Verizon's army, and just like the original Droid before it, it's a beast, but in a good way. The smartphone rocks a brilliant 4.3-inch touch screen and offers some great multimedia features, including an 8-megapixel camera with HD video capture, HDMI output, and DLNA support. However, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention that it does lack some features that the similar-looking HTC Evo 4G has, such as a front-facing camera and, of course, 4G support.

Still, we think Verizon has a formidable competitor in the Droid X. It's it's a great option for Verizon customers who want a little more multimedia oomph than what the HTC Droid Incredible has to offer, and is a worthy upgrade from the Droid if you can do without a physical keyboard. The Motorola Droid X will be available starting July 15 for $199.99 with a two-year contract and after a $100 mail-in rebate. Best Buy is taking in-store preorders for the phone, and we should also note that current Verizon customers who have contracts ending by December 31, 2010, will be able to upgrade to the Droid X without penalty.

Design
Motorola and Verizon definitely like to go big with their Android devices, first with the Motorola Droid and now with the Droid X. Measuring 5 inches tall by 2.6 inches wide by 0.4 inch thick and 5.47 ounces, it's a hair taller than the HTC Evo 4G, but also slightly thinner and lighter. We were actually surprised at how light the phone felt in the hand, but at that size, one-handed operation is a bit tough if you have smaller hands. It also makes for a tight squeeze in a pants pocket, but without a slide-out keyboard like the Droid's, it's doesn't feel quite as bulky. There is a slight bump on back where the camera and flash are housed, though we didn't find it to be too much of a nuisance. The backside also has a nice soft-touch finish, and the Droid X feels like a solid handset overall.


Much like the original Droid, the Droid X is quite a beast.

Now, we admit it feels awkward to hold such a big device up to the ear for phone calls, but the upside is that the extra space makes room for a bigger screen. The Droid X's display actually looks deceptively bigger than the Evo 4G's because of a thin border around the edge that blends into the screen, but it's the same size at 4.3 inches. It has a WVGA (854x480 pixels) resolution with a 16:9 aspect ratio and looks absolutely brilliant and crisp. Text is easy to read, and colors look vibrant, making the multimedia experience quite great. It is a multitouch display, so not only do you get pinch-to-zoom support, but you can also press two buttons on a keyboard at once (e.g., shift + letter key). There's also a proximity sensor and a built-in accelerometer that was pretty responsive in changing the screen orientation.

The Droid X offers two keyboards: a standard virtual keyboard and Swype. If the idea of dragging your finger from key to key to enter text sounds crazy, you're not alone. We were initially skeptical, too, but after first trying it on the Samsung Behold II, it's become our keyboard of choice. It's surprisingly accurate and quick. If you still don't like it, not to worry; the Droid X's standard keyboard is pretty awesome and feels more responsive than the Evo 4G's keyboard.


Below the screen, there are four physical shortcut buttons.

Below the display, you get the four standard Android shortcut keys--menu, home, back, and search--but unlike on the Evo, they're hard buttons and not touch-sensitive. Some might have a preference for one or the other, but we definitely liked having the physical buttons, and Motorola did a nice job of streamlining them into the phone's design. You also get some controls on the right side, including a volume rocker and camera activation/capture button. The latter is a little too close to the edge for our taste, which made it difficult to press, but it's certainly not a deal breaker.

On top of the device, you'll find a power/lock button as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack, and on the left, the Micro-USB port and the HDMI port. Like the Evo, the HDMI port is the Type D standard so you'll need to get a Micro-HDMI cable in order to connect it to your HDTV. You can easily find said cable on the Internet for as low as $8. And sorry, folks, but no kickstand on the Droid X.

Verizon packages the Motorola Droid X with an AC adapter, a USB cable, a 16GB microSD card, and reference material. As with the Droid, other accessories, such as a car mount ($39.99) and a multimedia dock ($49.99), will be made available. User interface
The Motorola Droid X will ship running Android 2.1 with a revised version of Motoblur software. The latter looks nothing like what we've seen on the Motorola Cliq and Backflip. You still get widgets for your social networking updates, weather, photo gallery, and favorite contacts, but they no longer take up huge chunks of space on your home screen, and you can even resize the widgets. It makes for a much cleaner experience, and you don't feel overwhelmed by all the information.

Aside from the Motorola widgets, you can also add Android widgets as well as shortcuts and folders to any one of the seven home screens. As you swipe through them, a small toolbar appears on the bottom to show you which panel you're on, and you can quickly jump to a page by pressing on the corresponding button. (The toolbar later changes to a quick-launch bar for the phone, full menu, and contacts after a couple of seconds.) It certainly makes it easier than swiping through all the panels, but we definitely preferred the HTC Sense Leap screen feature, which gives you a quick thumbnail view of each screen.

Overall, the Motoblur experience is much improved; it's a more refined, sophisticated Motoblur, if you will. However, users coming from the Droid, which ran the stock Android UI, might need some time to acclimate, and even then it still might be too much for some. Just remember that, like all Android phones, it's completely customizable, so just keep tweaking the UI until you find a system that works for you.

Features
As we mentioned earlier, the Motorola Droid X will ship with Android 2.1, but Verizon and Motorola are planning to release an over-the-air update to Android 2.2 Froyo later this summer. (The Droid is also expected to receive Froyo at that time.) This will bring speed improvements as well as new features like camera software improvements and, of course, Adobe Flash Player 10.1, so you'll get a more PC-like experience from the phone's mobile browser.

The Droid X still has plenty of other features to keep you distracted while you wait for that update. Given the large screen, it's no surprise that multimedia plays a huge part. Much like the HTC HD2, the smartphone offers a dedicated Blockbuster On Demand app where you can preview and download movies--to rent or to own--on the go. Once purchased, you can watch the video on another connected device, such as a TV, a Blu-ray player, or a PC, using Blockbuster software.


The Droid X has an 8-megapixel camera with dual-LED flash and 720p HD video capture.

You can make your own movies, too, since the Droid X has an 8-megapixel camera that's capable of capturing 720p HD video. In addition, the smartphone has a three-mic system for capturing the best audio for the situation. This option is available in camcorder mode under Scenes, and you have four choices: Everyday for capturing audio from all directions; Outdoors to reduce wind noise; Narrative for when you're, well, narrating a scene; and Subject to capture audio from the person you are filming--can't say we've seen this on any other camera phone. The camcorder, as well as the camera, also offers effects, face detection, dual-LED flash, autofocus, and digital zoom. The one thing you don't get is a front-facing camera like on the Evo 4G, but Motorola has said it will add this feature in future devices.

The Droid X has 8GB of onboard memory and ships with a 16GB microSD card, but the expansion slot supports up to 32GB cards, so you can essentially have 40GB of storage. You can share photos and videos through the usual avenues--e-mail, multimedia message, Bluetooth, Facebook, and so forth--but you can also display content on your HDTV via HDMI output or through a Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA)-compatible device. If you're not familiar with it, DLNA is a standard that makes it easier to move content, like movies, photos, and music, from device to device. Since the Droid X supports this technology, you can stream media from your phone to other DLNA-compliant tech, like the Xbox 360, without having to go through a whole setup process. In addition to an HDMI port, you can also share content from the Droid X to other devices via DLNA.

Moving away from the multimedia and back to some of the core functions of the smartphone, the Droid X supports Gmail, and POP3 and IMAP e-mail accounts, and it offers native Microsoft Exchange synchronization out of the box for e-mail, calendar, and contacts with access to global lookup. Corporate users will also be glad to know that the Droid X has security protocols for remote password control and wipe. Gmail aside, you can view your various e-mail accounts in a unified in-box or choose to keep them separate.

Voice features include a speakerphone, speed dial, voice commands, conference calling, Skype Mobile, and text and multimedia messaging with threaded chat view. Bluetooth, 3G, GPS, and integrated Wi-Fi are also onboard, and the Droid X can be used a mobile hot spot for up to five devices. To use this feature, you will need to sign up for the Mobile Broadband plan, which costs an additional $20 per month and has a 2GB data cap. If you go over, you will be charged 5 cents per MB in overage fees. By comparison, Sprint's mobile hot spot plan for the Evo 4G costs $29.99 per month, but there is no data cap. Still, it's a much-wanted feature, and we're sure road warriors and mobile professional will make good use of it.

We used the Droid X as a hot spot for a number of devices, including a Lenovo ThinkPad T61 and a MacBook Pro, and measured download and upload speeds using Speedtest.net. We conducted tests throughout Manhattan and averaged download speeds of 1.75Mbps and upload speeds of 0.46Mbps. It was adequate for getting our work done, but we got kicked off the connection several times, which was frustrating.

Performance
We'll be putting the Motorola Droid through a battery of tests over the next few days, but we wanted to give you some initial impressions of the phone's performance. We tested the dual-band (800/1900; EVDO Rev. A) Motorola Droid X in New York using Verizon service, and call quality was great. Conversations on our end sounded mostly clear with just some slight background noise, but nothing too distracting. Our friends didn't complain about any background disruption or voice distortion and were quite happy. They didn't even notice when we switched over to speakerphone, but we noticed a hollowness to speakerphone calls. The good news is that there's plenty of volume to hold conversations in louder environments.

Verizon's 3G network provided mostly reliable coverage through Manhattan, though there were a couple of times it dropped to 1xRTT. With 3G, CNET's full site loaded in 30 seconds; CNN's and ESPN's mobile sites loaded in 5 seconds and 10 seconds, respectively. We also streamed some clips from YouTube and V Cast Video. Videos loaded in just a couple of seconds and played back continuously with synchronized audio and picture. The video quality was a little murky, as expected, but our own MP4 videos looked fantastic on the Droid X's display.

As for the Droid X's 8-megapixel camera, picture quality was a bit mixed. Despite having autofocus, we weren't always able to get a clear shot, and it doesn't help that there's a bit of shutter lag. With a little patience, you can get some nice pictures, and the flash did a great job of capturing images in darker rooms. Outdoor shots also looked good. Given the limited time with the device, we weren't able to fully explore the HD-video-recording capabilities, but we'll be roaming around the city to capture video and test out the three-mic system. For a camera phone, the recorded HD video looked great. The picture was clear, even action sequences, which often tend to get murky or pixelated. We also tried a couple of the mic settings--Outdoors and Narrative--and noticed a subtle difference in the audio, but nothing dramatic. Still, we appreciate that Motorola even thought to make this a feature.

The Droid X has a 1GHz TI OMAP processor, and the phone has been quite responsive. It's not quite as lightning-fast as the Droid Incredible, but we were able to open multiple apps with little delay. There were a couple of instances, however, when we returned to the home screen and the background went completely black before returning to normal, so we'll keep an eye out for that as we continue testing.

The Droid X comes with a 1,540mAh lithium ion battery with a rated talk time of 8 hours and up to 9 days of standby time. In our battery drain tests, the Droid X impressed us with 7.5 hours of continuous talk time on a single charge. Standby time was also great, and the smartphone lasted at least a full day with moderate use. According to FCC radiation tests, the Droid X has a digital SAR rating of 1.43 watts per kilogram and a Hearing Aid Compatibility rating of M4/T3.

LG Optimus S - charcoal (Sprint)

The good: The LG Optimus S has an attractive, slim profile with features that include GPS, EV-DO Rev. A, and Wi-Fi with tethering capabilities. It also has a 3.2-megapixel camera and it ships with Android 2.2.

The bad: The LG Optimus S' slower processor means it doesn't have Flash video in the browser. The camera doesn't have HD video capture or an LED flash. Call quality was mixed.

The bottom line: The LG Optimus S is an affordable yet full-featured Android smartphone for Sprint, but we did wish the call quality were better.

The LG Optimus S for Sprint may not be quite so cheap, but it's still pretty affordable. It has many of the same features as the Optimus T--it ships with Android 2.2, has Wi-Fi and 3G, and it can act as a portable Wi-Fi hot spot. The Optimus S is also one of a few phones to support Sprint's new Sprint ID packs, which let you customize the phone with certain personality profiles. The LG Optimus S is available for $49.99 with a new two-year contract from Sprint.

Design
When we first saw the LG Optimus S, we thought we were looking at a clone of the LG Optimus T. Indeed, the two phones are very similar, not just in terms of features, but also in design. Both phones measure 4.47 inches long by 2.32 inches wide by 0.52 inch thick, and both are coated with a smooth soft-touch finish that leads to a comfortable feel in the hand. The Optimus S comes only in charcoal gray.


The LG Optimus S has a 3.2-inch display.

On the front of the Optimus S is a roomy 3.2-inch LCD display that supports 16.7 million colors and 320x480-pixel resolution. It being an entry-level phone, you won't get high-end graphics as seen on a Droid X or a MyTouch 3G, but we think it still looks great. Images are colorful, text is sharp, and it felt intuitive and easy to use. You can adjust the brightness, the backlight timer, and the transitions between opening and closing apps. Aside from multitouch and pinch-to-zoom, the Optimus S also has a proximity sensor and an internal accelerometer.

Underneath the display is where you start to see the differences between the Optimus T and the Optimus S. The Home and Menu keys are switched, and while the Optimus T housed the Home and Back keys in one panel, the Optimus S separated them out into individual keys. Both have the Search key on the far right. The Optimus S has a slightly wider volume rocker on the right spine, and it also has a voice command key and a camera key, while the Optimus T had neither. The Optimus S houses its microSD card slot on the left spine, but the Optimus T hid it behind the battery cover. Both phones have a 3.2-megapixel camera on the back. Rounding out the exterior of the Optimus S are the Micro-USB charging port on the bottom, and the 3.5mm headset jack and Screen lock/Power key at the top.

The interface is also where you'll see a difference between the Optimus T and the Optimus S. Both ship with Android 2.2, and both have five customizable home screens, but the Optimus S can be further customized with Sprint's Sprint ID pack system. A "Sprint ID" is essentially a profile of preconfigured wallpapers, shortcuts, widgets, and settings. You can switch between different profiles by tapping the Sprint ID icon on the home screen. The idea behind the Sprint ID system is that instead of having to personalize your starting home screens from scratch, your selected Sprint ID will do it for you. Along with the ID button on the home screen, you also get shortcuts to the phone dialer and the main menu. The phone dialer app is fairly self-explanatory and is similar to the one we've seen on other Android phones. As for messaging, the Optimus S only comes with the default multitouch Android keyboard--you'll have to download and install Swype on your own if you prefer that.

Features
Even though the Optimus S is billed as an entry-level smartphone, it's still chock-full of features. It ships with Android 2.2, which has a number of improvements over Android 2.1. They include voice dialing over Bluetooth, app storage on a memory card, a new camera viewfinder, app sharing, and Facebook integration. The one downside is that even though Android 2.2 supports in-browser Flash video, the Optimus S doesn't have the hardware horsepower for it.

Yet, we're not upset, as the Optimus S has plenty more to offer. It has 3G with EV-DO Rev. A and Wi-Fi with hot-spot capabilities. Bear in mind that you do need to pay around $30 a month for the extra tethering/hot-spot option. Other connectivity features include Bluetooth with A2DP and GPS. You can use GPS with Google's own Maps and Latitude apps as well as the Sprint Navigation app.

Basic features on the Optimus S include a speakerphone, vibrate mode, conference calling, voice dialing, visual voice mail, a calendar, and text and multimedia messaging. The phone book is limited only by the available memory, and there's room in each phone book entry for multiple numbers, e-mail addresses, IM handles, and more. You can merge contact information from multiple e-mail and social networking accounts too. For e-mail, you can use Gmail, your own POP3/IMAP server accounts, and it also supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync.

The Optimus S comes with a few preloaded apps like Sprint's own Sprint TV, Sprint Zone, NASCAR, and Sprint Football Live. Of course it also supports all of Google's own apps like the aforementioned Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Google Talk, and Voice search. It doesn't come with a lot of extra apps and games, but you can get those via the Android Marketplace.

The music and video players are standard Android fare, so there's no surprise there. The phone has 170MB of built-in memory, but it does come with a 2GB microSD card. You can use up to a 32GB card if you want more storage.


The photo quality was pretty good for a 3.2-megapixel camera.

The 3.2-megapixel camera is pretty decent. It can take pictures in five resolutions, and settings include an adjustable ISO, different white balance presets, color effects, a timer, brightness, six scene modes (Automatic, Portrait, Landscape, Sports, Night, and Sunset), four focus modes (Auto, Macro, Face tracking, and Manual), and 2x digital zoom. Picture quality was pretty good, even without an LED flash. Images looked sharp, though colors did seem a bit more washed out than we would like. There's also a video recorder that can record VGA, QVGA, and QCIF clips.

Performance
We tested the LG Optimus S in San Francisco using Sprint. Call quality was mixed. We heard our callers loud and clear, but did think there was a bit of static in the background. When we called automated phone systems, they recognized our voices without problems.

Callers, however, said that we sounded a little digitized. They also reported that our voice clarity was inconsistent--it was clear one second, and oddly muffled another. They could still hear what we were saying, but it was definitely not as clean as they would have preferred. Speakerphone quality was not much better--our voices sounded even more muffled, and the echo increased as well.

We were mostly pleased with the EV-DO Rev. A speeds. We loaded the CNET mobile page in 12 seconds, and YouTube videos had only a few seconds' buffering time. Video quality did seem blurry and pixelated, though.

Despite the Optimus S's dinky 600MHz processor, we experienced zippy performance overall. We experienced few hiccups when launching and switching apps, or when scrolling through the browser. Our main hurdle was when we were switching Sprint ID packs, which sometimes took a few more seconds than we would like.

The LG Optimus S has a rated talk time of 11 hours and a standby time of 18.75 days. It has a tested talk time of 10 hours and 42 minutes. According to the FCC, it has a digital SAR of 1.04 watts per kilogram.
