RIM Releases BBM Music Social Music Sharing & Discovery Beta

 360x480_BBCM_Wall 360x480_BBCM_All_Songs_Who_Add_to_Playlist

We have been hearing rumblings but now it is official. RIM has released BBM Music in a public beta in the Beta Zone for the US, Canada, and UK with more countries coming soon. BBM Music is RIM’s attempt to differentiate the BlackBerry platform with social features built on their latest BBM 6 functionality. It lets users build a catalog of 50 songs to define themselves with the ability to change 25 of those songs every month. You then invite your friends on BBM and you can play both your catalog along with all of your friends selected songs. The bigger your BBM contact list the bigger your collection. You easily get to see what songs your friends chose and listen to their full tracks. Better yet you get to keep track of how many of your friends listened to your tracks. It also gives you offline listening so you can listen to songs on the subway (Sweet!). RIM currently has a catalog of 2+ million songs to choose from and they are hoping to grow it significantly when it comes out of beta.

360x480_BBCM_Media_Player 360x480_BBCM_My_Friends_List

The BBM Music app will offer up a free month for users after which you will have to pay $4.99/month to listen to full tracks. If you don’t pay then you still get access to all the social features but you will only be able to play 30 second previews. The social features are slick letting you leave comments on songs and even start a chat around them. Check it out at www.blackberry.com/bbmmusic

Key features of BBM Music include:

  • Music made social – BBM Music is a cloud-based, social music service that allows you to share and discover music with your friends, creating a continually evolving music library:
    • Build a personal music profile with 50 of your favorite songs. You can refresh your profile by swapping out up to 25 songs each month.
    • Invite your BBM friends to subscribe to BBM Music and to join your BBM Music Community.
    • With each friend that is added to BBM Music, you grow your music collection since the songs from the profile of each BBM Music friend are available to you at any time.
    • Up to 50 tracks from your personal profile are shared with your BBM Music Community, and each member of your community shares up to 50 songs from their profile with you.
    • Enjoy a truly social community-based music experience – the more friends who join your community, the more songs you can listen to.
    • Easily discover music that your BBM Music friends are listening to, and comment on your friends‟ songs and playlists.
    • You can create multiple playlists from music in your profile as well as all of your friends‟ profiles, and with one click you can shuffle the entire collection of music from your BBM Music Community. You can even see which friend contributed each song while it plays.
    • Within your BBM Music app, you also see a visual timeline that shows the recent updates of all users within your community. It gives you a chronological view of community updates, including who added new friends, which songs were added or removed, which playlists were created and what comments were made by your BBM Music friends.
  • Listen to Full Tracks – BBM Music subscribers can listen to full tracks from their friends‟ profiles – not just previews.
  • Offline Listening – Music can be saved to smartphones for offline listening, allowing users to access songs even when they don‟t have wireless coverage.
  • Topping the Charts – Keep track of how many friends are listening to your tracks.

RIM Announces BBM Music – A New Social Music Sharing and Discovery Service
New Cloud-Based Music Service Makes Music a Social Experience

Waterloo, ON – Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced BBMTM Music, a new BBM (BlackBerry® Messenger) service for socially connected music fans.
BBM Music is an easy-to-use cloud-based service that enables social and viral music discovery by allowing users to build an evolving, community-based music library that is shared amongst their BBM Music friends. The size of the music library continues to grow as new friends join the community and each user can select music from a catalog with millions of songs from leading music companies – Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI.

“More than 45 million customers already love the social communication benefits delivered through BBM and we are thrilled to be extending the experience into a uniquely social and interactive music service,” said Mike Lazaridis, President and Co-CEO at Research In Motion. “We have partnered with leading music companies to provide a „full track‟ music sharing and discovery experience that will provide users with quality music on demand and allow them to connect with friends on a whole new level.”

Key features of BBM Music include:

“A major component of online music continues to be about community, and the ability to discover new artists and music through word of mouth,” stated Rob Wells, President of Global Digital Business for Universal Music Group. “BBM Music dynamically and elegantly integrates the excitement of this social music discovery process with a high quality music service, enabling tens of millions of BlackBerry users to experience new music and to share those experiences with their friends virtually anywhere and at anytime.”

“We are pleased to be partnering with Research In Motion on their BBM Music service. RIM and its large base of BlackBerry Messenger users represent an exciting platform for expanding the reach of commercial digital music around the world,” stated Thomas Hesse, President, Global Digital Business, U.S. Sales and Corporate Strategy, Sony Music Entertainment. “The combination of a premium music solution and instant messaging will enable viral music discovery and emphasize the social power of digital music. It also offers an effective way of serving younger consumers by integrating music into the fabric of an important hub of their digital activity.”

"A dynamic social music experience is a powerful way for our artists to connect with fans and also for fans to discover music by interacting with each other," said Michael Nash, Executive Vice President, Digital Strategy & Business Development, Warner Music Group. "Addressing more than 45 million BlackBerry Messenger users with a service tailor-made for its mobile community, BBM Music has the opportunity to reach a broad and engaged audience."

“We are very excited to work with Research In Motion to bring our artists‟ music to BBM‟s huge and very loyal user base,” said Mark Piibe, Executive Vice President of Global Business Development at EMI Music. “BBM Music‟s unique social discovery experience offers fans a
great new way to discover music, share their favorite tracks with their friends and build a stronger connection with the artists they love.”

"The widespread adoption of mobile devices provides the perfect foundation for consuming and sharing music. Brands that want to deliver a unique interactive experience must create services that are mobile, social, and contextual,” said Maribel Lopez Principal at Lopez Research and Constellation Research Group.

A closed (limited) beta trial of the BBM Music service is starting today in Canada, the United States and the UK. The BBM Music service is expected to be commercially available to customers later this year for a monthly subscription of $4.99 USD* in Australia, Canada, Columbia, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, UAE, the United Kingdom and the United States.
For more information about BBM Music, and to sign up to be notified of its availability in your country, please visit www.blackberry.com/bbmmusic.

* Pricing may vary by country and will be announced upon availability in each country. Data charges may apply if music is downloaded over wireless networks in conjunction with limited data plans. Check with your network operator for the terms of your data plan

Interview with BBM Music Senior Project Manager Nick Patsiopoulos

360x480_BBCM_Media_Player 360x480_BBCM_All_Songs_Who_Add_to_Playlist

I had the pleasure to talk to Nick Patsiopoulos, Senior Project Manager for BBM Music at RIM, yesterday about their latest announcement. This is a pretty big announcement for RIM with them entering the social space with a music app. According to Nick the BBM launch gave RIM the opportunity to take advantage of the huge BBM social network to build a BBM Music app with social built in from the ground up. There have been many attempts to make personal music social but there have been very few successes and Nick mentioned that most of them have been trying to bolt on social to a personal music service. BBM Music on the other hand is “Social front and center.” The cloud based BBM service starts off with social by you adding music and your whole music experience is based on your social graph. After the jump I dig deeper into RIM’s new BBM Music beta but let me know if I missed anything you want me to follow up with Nick on!

What exactly is BBM Music?

BBM Music is a cloud based social music platform with “Social front and center”. It differentiates itself by being built around social networking instead of having social networking bolted on. It creates a personal profile for users that becomes a “personal music profile on steroids” allowing you to select 50 songs that “define yourself and your history.”

How does BBM Music work?

Each BBM Music user can select up to 50 songs that they choose to represent themselves. These 50 songs become something you identify with and others can experience through you. Every month you can switch up to 25 of those songs which also extends those songs into your social graph. You can then look at your BBM contacts and listen to their full songs like it is yours. With BBM baked in you can chat right from the app and comment on your BBM friends profiles or song selections.

So how much does BBM Music cost?

New BBM Music users will get a one month free trial of the service after which they can enter in their payment information to extend it for $4.99 a month.

What if a BBM Music user does not pay the monthly subscription?

BBM Music users will still be able to use all the features of BBM Music without a subscription except for the ability to listen to songs. That means you can still select the 50 songs you recommend and view others recommend so you still have access to the whole social BBM Music scene including comments and chats. Your BBM social network will not get access to the 50 songs you select though.

Is BBM Music tied into your BlackBerry ID?

Definitely!

How about purchasing music that you listen to through BBM Music?

In countries where the Amazon MP3 store is available you will be able to purchase music you listen to in BBM Music if its available. In some locations it may link to the carriers music store.

What countries is BBM Music open to in the Beta? What about at full launch?

During the beta BBM Music is limited to the US, Canada, and the UK. It will be available later this year in Australia, Canada, Columbia, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, UAE, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Will there be a desktop website/app counterpart?

BBM Music is a pure mobile experience. (I forgot to ask about the PlayBook)

How does the BBM Music songs get to your device?

The songs are played through a progressive download. At the same time as songs are playing it is caching the song to your local storage for listening later. You also have the ability to manually cache songs or profiles to your device for listening on the subway. (Sweet!) Songs are also automatically cached based on certain preferences.

What happens when everybody has BBM Music? Will you have every song available?

If you think of it this way “250 contacts with 50 songs each more or less means you have music to listen to for every hour of the day for a month.” (Math more or less works at 3-4 minutes a song) During the beta the BBM Music connections is limited to 140 BBM Music contacts until launch but it can scale past there.

What made you decide on the $4.99 price point? Are there advertisements?

There are definitely no advertisements. At $4.99/month it is roughly half of what other mobile music services charge.

What made RIM decide to create BBM Music now?

RIM has been making a strong push into social and with BBM 6 just launching this was a perfect opportunity. RIM saw the gap in what others were providing and plan to fill that gap.

How has the beta of BBM Music been going on campus at RIM headquarters?

BBM Music is one of the biggest if not the biggest internal betas ever done at RIM. Users have pride in their music selections and it has been truly viral. We have been constantly bombarded by users who want in on the beta.

What part of BBM Music has users coming back?

There is a constantly updating timeline of what is going on in BBM Music in your social graph. You get to see what your friends choose as songs and what they are listening too or commenting on. You also get a sense of pride by getting to see how many times the songs you selected were listened too.

Will BBM Music be launching in the Beta Zone or App World Test Center?

During the limited beta it will be in the Beta Zone. You will be able to invite friends to the app through the app itself but during the beta they will also have to download it through the Beta Zone. (Really hope they fix that ASAP)

Thanks Nick! Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us with the BBM Music launch!

Foursquare Talks About Success of BlackBerry App & BBM Integration

 IMG_4196IMG_4198

Pete Nofelt from Foursquare made an appearance at the BBM Hackathon with some interesting data to share. BlackBerry is a huge part of Foursquare’s success and Pete was backing it up with numbers. Their implementation of the BBM Social Platform has been a HUGE hit and really skyrocketed their user engagement along with bringing a record number of users. Here is some of the data Pete shared:

Pete had a couple of tips for developers. Mainly don’t be spammy and respect a users trust they gave you when installing the app. He said that BBM helped users share data outside Foursquare and lets you share data outside your graph. He also said that developers should change the package name to avoid conflicts if you use RIM’s plugin. He mentioned that the RIM provided code degrades gracefully so it wont throw exceptions if a user is using a non BBM6 supported OS or does not have BBM6 and installs your BBM powered app. Last but not least he recommended throwing in extras like a nice bright color scheme and start up screen which users appreciate from Foursquare.

Let us know if you want us to ask Pete anything else!

Why Social & BBM SDK is So Important to RIM – Wordmole Getting BBM Treatment

IMG_4188

At the Hackathon Tyler Lessard and the head of the BBM SDK initiative (didn’t catch his name) talked about why BBM is so important and why this BBM Social Platform is exciting for RIM. Tyler bases his reasoning on Ray Kurzweil and his “Law of Accelerating Returns” which boils down to proving exponential instead of linear growth in technology. He talks about how companies are now building on today’s technology. That means they are building their apps assuming things that never existed just a few years ago. For example, the big push into the cloud means operating systems are now assuming that the cloud exists and building on top of it. Its the same thing for Social, NFC, connected Gaming, etc.

RIM found that apps that were socially connected were 8 times more sticky than their non connected versions and bring higher levels of engagement. All in all that means they are opening a huge new social graph to developers that is only available for BlackBerry developers. That is why I am really looking forward to RIM’s first BBM Hackathon. RIM let us know that they plan on doing many more Hackathons with possible other locations in North America and around the world. They have done some in Asia and Europe in the past but those were mostly a sponsorship of another companies Hackathon. They are counting on these 30 Hackathon contestants to tell them what they are doing right or wrong and provide feedback directly to the managers and developers involved in the BBM SDK and the BlackBerry dev platform in general. Anybody noticing a paradigm shift in how RIM is reaching out to developers?

On a side note the slides RIM was using to show off the BBM SDK and its features all showed off screenshots of Wordmole with the BBM SDK features built in. That includes chat and a few other features. I did not have a chance to check the BlackBerry 7 devices to see if they have this new version. Check the screenshots below to see what I mean:

RIM Releases BlackBerry Messenger 6 Officially!

BBM Talking

RIM let us know that the official rollout of BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 starts at 12:01AM EST. Sorry we jumped the gun a few hours ago but now you understand why. You can start checking App World now for the update but due to their 24 hour cache period that may take a bit. As you have already seen RIM has started approving apps in App World that make use of the Social Platform available in BBM 6 so they are available when BBM6 launches now.

In an interview with Mike Kirkup, Director of Developer Relations @ RIM, he told us that BBM now has 45 million users and is seeing tremendous growth. They process over a billion BBM messages a day and the number is only growing. This ability to use BBM inside 3rd party apps is going to be explosive but more on that soon. RIM’s goal is to let developer harness BBM’s instant feature. Mike told me his colleague described it as both Instant AND Intimate. In other words sub 3 second messages along with a intimate private chat setting. Now developers are going to be able to tap into that powerful BBM social graph.

You should be able to find BBM 6 in App World sometime today or directly at:
www.blackberry.com/blackberrymessenger

Check out the press release below:

RIM Delivers Revolutionary Social App Experience with BBM 6
Apps become social experiences once users can interact with their BBM friends

Waterloo, ON – BBMTM (BlackBerry® Messenger), one of the largest mobile social networks in the world is now enabling a new and revolutionary social experience. Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced the availability of BBM version 6 (BBM 6), which provides support for "BBM connected" apps, allowing users to easily interact with each other from within the BBM connected app.

BBM connected apps integrate the popular functionality of the BBM service and offer users the ability to interact with their friends from within the app itself. For example, with a BBM connected game app, users can invite their BBM friends to join them in a game and then chat with one another in real time while the game is being played – without ever leaving the game app.

BBM 6 launches today and a selection of BBM connected apps are already available on BlackBerry App WorldTM.

“BBM 6 marks the beginning of an even greater social experience for BlackBerry smartphone users,” said Alistair Mitchell, VP, BBM Platform & Integrated Services at Research In Motion. “It also represents an incredible opportunity for developers to leverage the viral nature of the BBM service and we have already begun working with various developer partners who will be bringing their BBM connected apps to BlackBerry App World this week, offering users highly engaging app experiences.”

Some of the additional functionality users can expect to see with BBM connected applications include the ability to:

The BBM 6 software will be available later today at www.blackberry.com/blackberrymessenger. A selection of BBM connected apps will also be posted on BlackBerry App World this week, with many more expected over the coming months.

10 BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 Powered Apps – Developers Sound Off!

 BBM Social Platform

The team at RIM has rounded up some of the many new and long time titles in App World that are now making use of the new BlackBerry Messenger 6.0 and its new Social Platform SDK APIs. This list is in no way extensive and some of the apps are still rolling out but its a good place to start. It includes some of the apps we have already mentioned on BerryReview and including the upcoming augmented reality Wikitude BlackBerry OS 7 app. Personally I am checking out Backgammon King when I have time today. I have always wanted to play Backgammon with friends instead of random strangers.

Each app below has an accompanying message from the developer explaining what they thought of BBM 6 and the social platform it is packing. Its great to see such a positive response from BlackBerry developers from games to business app developers.

Backgammon King (App World) – One of Magmic’s top games is now social. If you want to play against a friend , challenge a BBM contact to a friendly  game or send an invite to download and start the fun.

“Players have always been able to play Backgammon King against real opponents but playing against your friends took a lot of time and effort,” said Troy Johnson, Director Strategic Initiatives, Magmic. “Your BBM contacts are your friends and BBM 6 is making it incredibly easy to share Backgammon King with them and invite them to play in real-time. The ease of access to our product, the ease of sharing and the ease of player engagement are each major breakthroughs. Combine those attributes of BBM 6 with Magmics’ industry leading in-game chat design and you have an incredibly entertaining experience. Trash talking your best friend over a game of backgammon has never been easier and more fun. It’s no exaggeration to say, for Backgammon King, BBM 6 is a real game changer.”

Foursquare (App World) – Foursquare is all about helping you find new ways to explore the city. Earn points and unlock badges, profiles and status updates over BBM.

"RIM is a fantastic partner. We’re thrilled to be working with them to provide a better experience to millions of foursquare users around the world by integrating foursquare with BBM," said Holger Luedorf, VP of Mobile and Partnerships for foursquare.

Huffington Post (App World) – The Huffington Post, a leader in implementing social features to reach and interact with its network of readers and bloggers, depends on the BBM Social Platform to continue to reach its audiences, even when they are on the go.

“The Huffington Post, a leader in implementing social features to reach and interact with its network of readers and bloggers, integrates the BlackBerry Social Platform to create a place where our users can continue to engage in up-to-the-minute news stories, blogs, and analysis,” said Paul Berry, CTO of the Huffington Post Media Group.    “As a BBM connected app, we make it simple for our readers to easily share and discuss the news. BBM 6 allows The Huffington Post to continue to reach its audience in a new way when they are on the go, and without having to compromise on the quality of their experience."

Jingu (App World) – Jingu is an application for BBM only and it is focused on enriching the BBM communication experience and the BBM community with the addition of social chat, photo sharing, avatars, and more.

“Jingu users are engaging with BlackBerry Messenger in an exciting new way,” said Pankaj Gogia, Founder, Jingu Apps. “With BBM 6, ease of use is greatly enhanced with capabilities like updating your BBM profile picture directly from within the application. Jingu is dedicated to creating social networking applications built on the BlackBerry Messenger Social Platform that
leverage the new capabilities of BBM 6 and bring enriched and vastly immersive experiences to end users.”

Pocket Ants (App World) – You are the king of the ANTS- feeding, burning, fighting, and racing your ants. Now with BBM you can invite all your friends to rule an ant colony too.

"One of the keys to viral game sales is to allow users to easily invite their friends to join them in playing the games they love,” said Keith Pichelman, CEO, Concrete Software. “Integrating BBM into Pocket Ants has allowed the game to do just that."

Poynt (App World) – Find businesses, people, restaurants, movies, events and weather info. Going out for dinner with friends? Find a great spot and share it.

“I don’t know anyone who doesn’t immediately react to the ‘chime’ of BBM,” said Margaret Glover-Campbell, VP Marketing & PR of Poynt Corporation. “Being able to leverage BBM 6 to share search results provides a tremendous advantage to our BlackBerry smartphone user base who can now easily and quickly coordinate their social activities. The ability to share the app download directly within BBM is also exciting for us, given the immediacy and viral nature of the platform. From a development perspective, we see tremendous possibilities for future integration around connecting people while they’re on the go.”

PowWow Study (App World) – PowWow uses BBM integration to provide real time social event coordination. Connected BBM 6 users are directly invited and notified of events that are created using Powwow. With PowWow the latest information is made available.

“PowWow uses BBM 6 integration to enable real time social event coordination,” said Kathryn Lahrs, Founder, Lahrs Apps. “Users are directly invited and notified of events that are created with our application. With PowWow, the latest information is available and BBM chats can quickly be started if any further communication is desired. Through BBM 6 PowWow users can share their location information, which is displayed in BlackBerry Maps. There is also an option to check your contact’s availability directly from their calendars and to create an event with this information; this is a very useful tool in event planning and saves time in the process.”

ScoreMobile (App World) – Up-to-the-minute sports scores, players, stats, betting odds and more. You can invite BBM friends into the app to chat about the latest sports banter, share scores and more.

“Following sports is inherently social – fans are extremely passionate, and like to trash talk, comment, and generally share their opinions on whatever they’re watching,” says Dale Fallon, VP Digital Products, Score Media. “By integrating BBM 6 functionality right into the ScoreMobile experience, we enable our users to enjoy the game with their friends even when they’re not together. In a nutshell, BBM 6 integration allows sports fans to be social without having to leave the ScoreMobile app.”

Telmap Navigator (App World) – Telmap is a mobile location companion which now integrates with BBM to bring significantly enriched communication and interactions with users’ real-time locations.

“Telmap, a global location-based services leader, is very focused on serving all users’ needs by constantly enriching and optimizing their on-the-go experiences,” said Motti Kushnir, Telmap Chief Marketing Officer. “The integration between BBM 6 and the Telmap Mobile Location Companion significantly enriches conversations and interactions through BBM with users’ real-time locations. Telmap views this integration as an important pillar of our vision to provide a richer, more comprehensive experience to our users. We work hard to integrate our application with popular and useful platforms like BBM, to ensure added value to users who can now add location information to their interactions with friends."

Unvired (App World) – Unvired Workflow by SAP allows users to take action on the workflow documents directly from their BB. The BBM integration allows sharing of screen shots/pictures with colleagues during collaboration.

“Unvired Workflow for SAP enables approval of SAP workflow requests directly from the BlackBerry smartphone. Unvired leverages the BlackBerry message list and BBM to provide a familiar BlackBerry user experience,” said Srinivasan Subramanian, CEO, Indience InfoSystems Pvt Ltd. “The BBM platform has been smartly integrated to enable employees to collaborate seamlessly. If the user has some queries while approving the workflow, they can BBM their colleague or Manager, transfer a screenshot of the workflow item and clarify. They can then approve or reject the workflow request. The BBM chat can also be emailed to maintain an audit trail. The BBM integration with Unvired ensures quick turnaround and collaboration between employees, not just for workflow but other usages like checking discounts for a customer, escalating a customer grievance and much more.”

Wikitude (Not Available Yet – BlackBerry OS 7) – Wikitude allows you to experience your BBM in a new way. By using the camera, simply pan around your mobile to contacts in Augmented Reality. You may even find new friends in your vicinity – a truly engaging and immersive experience.

"BBM 6 is the underlying mobile social network making Wikitude on the BlackBerry platform a very unique experience. An augmented reality (AR) browser with millions of interesting places is already a very compelling and new proposition, but bringing it to life with millions of people who can chat, meet and share in an AR environment has the potential to revolutionize how we interact with one another. With BBM 6 and Wikitude preloaded on upcoming BlackBerry smartphones our AR browser will be truly going social for the very first time," says Andy Gstoll, CMO of Wikitude.

Rumor: RIM Working on BBM Social Platform Music App

BBM Music App

I am really hoping RIM blows things out of the park with the BBM social platform and their 1st party apps and helps developers do the same. In that vein BBSync heard from one of their sources that RIM is working on a BBM Social Platform Music app that will make use of that API called BBM Music. I think that is a brilliant move especially after their moves into Amazon MP3 store and BlackBerry Radio.

The app is supposed to be a stand alone app but tie in to BBM nice and tight. What do you think of such an app? I know quite a few people who already use BBM to share what music they are listening to. I am hoping the BBM Social Platform allows devs like Slacker and Pandora to do the same.

S4BB Photo Booth Adds BlackBerry Messenger 6 Social Platform Support

screenshot_2

S4BB released Photo Booth a bit ago and I was impressed with the app. It lets you easily take 4 pictures in a row sort of like photo booths at amusement parks. They just updated their app to include a awesome new features that integrates with BlackBerry Messenger 6 and its new Social Platform SDK and API. The app now lets you send the pictures after you are done to a friend on BBM. You just need to make sure they also have the app installed from what I can tell and have BBM 6 installed.

You can pick up Photo Booth in the store at this link for $2.99 on sale from $4.99

RIM Makes BBM Social SDK Updates Official for Java and WebWorks

webworks PlayBook Torch

We told you yesterday about this update but it seems like RIM has finally gotten around to announcing it. RIM has made the new BBM Social SDK 1.0 for Java official so you can now submit apps to App World with these features. They have also made the BBM Social SDK for WebWorks available in public beta so it does not look like you will be able to submit those apps but you can get started developing them.

The catch is that RIM will not make apps using the BBM Social API available for sale until BBM 6 is publicly available outside of App World. This is because BBM 6 is required for the SDK and APIs to work. RIM is saying that apps submitted and approved by July 8th will be available when BBM 6 launches. That means BBM 6 is right around the corner!

Check out more details about the announcement on RIM’s devblog including download links:

More details from RIM’s announcement:

Today Research In Motion (RIM) announced the global availability of the BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM™) Social Platform SDK 1.0 for BlackBerry Java final version and the BlackBerry® Messenger (BBM™) Social Platform SDK 1.0 for BlackBerry WebWorks™ first public beta version. The BBM Social Platform SDK is the toolset which enables developers to build a new class of super apps that leverage the power of the BBM social interactions. BBM has over 45 million active users world-wide and is growing at over 2 million active users per month.

The SDKs give Java and web developers access to new APIs that enable them to deeply integrate BBM social interactions in their apps, providing better differentiation. They can also leverage a powerful paradigm for app monetization through the viral distribution channel represented by the conversations of 45 million BBM users. They can build highly socially engaging apps including multimedia, gaming, location-based services (LBS), VoIP, video and commerce that now bring users’ friends, families, and colleagues into those experiences. Within those apps, not only can users connect and chat with BBM contacts but they can also share application achievements and content in real time.

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) Social Platform SDK 1.0 for BlackBerry Java

The final version of the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) Social Platform SDK 1.0 for Blackberry Java adds a few changes and refinements to the platform since the last beta refresh in the spring of this year. These additions further equip BlackBerry to be the mobile platform of choice for delivering social applications and experiences. Below are a few of the APIs new in this release that enable developers to deliver engaging and interactive social experiences:

· The ability for an application to receive invitations from other users who are not on their contact list.

· Contact picker UI changed to improve the selection of multiple contacts and for initiating a multi-user chat.

· The ability to send a join invitation to a user who does not have the app installed.

· A new API to determine whether the app is running on the test platform or production platform.

Developers can already get started and download the final version of the BBM Social Platform  SDK 1.0 for BlackBerry Java now available from BlackBerry Developer Zone  at http://us.blackberry.com/developers/blackberrymessenger/ to create the new build for their apps. BBM 6 will support apps using the BBM Social Platform.

BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) Social Platform SDK 1.0 for BlackBerry WebWorks

At its first public beta the BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) Social Platform SDK 1.0 for BlackBerry WebWorks adds full support to the BlackBerry WebWorks platform and brings the amazing features of the BBM Social Platform to web developers. Now they can add social features to their web application through the following APIs:

· access and update fields in the user’s BBM profile such as status, avatar and personal message

· create their own custom areas within the user’s BBM profile for promoting recent application activity or storing trophies and achievements

· initiate BBM chats with friends

· initiate BBM file transfers

· share applications virally with friends in their contact list

· initiate application-to-application background communication through BBM for sending and receiving application data, such as game moves, or alternatively, leverage this communication channel for enabling in-app chat

The beta version for BlackBerry WebWorks can be downloaded from the BlackBerry Developer Zone at http://us.blackberry.com/developers/blackberrymessenger/

BlackBerry Messenger v6.0.0.111 Available in Beta Zone

BBM Beta Update

The BBM news keeps on coming. The BlackBerry Beta Zone just have a new version of BBM drop for us to play with! This coincides perfectly with the launch of the BBM Social Platform SDK which is coming soon. It will be launching officially soon after July 8th. Here is the official update note from the Beta Zone:

What’s New -You won’t see any new features in this version since we’ve focused on fixing a lot of the bugs found in BBM 6 and the BBM Social Platform. We really need developers to update to this version, but we would still like beta testers to test this version from an end user’s perspective to make sure everything’s working fine!

So enjoy this new version! Use BBM as you normally would and leave feedback in the discussion forum if you see anything "funny". We may follow up with a survey in future to get your feedback on any  issues found in this version .

Thanks to everyone who reported any bugs or feature requests for BBM v6.0.0.73. They’ve all been shared with the project team and we’re actively investigating them for future versions of BBM.
