Google Discontinues Standalone Gmail App for BlackBerry

Well this is no big surprise. After not receiving updates for years Google has decided to stop developing and releasing their standalone Gmail BlackBerry app. It hasen’t worked right on BlackBerry 7 devices either way but still I used it every blue moon to access old emails that were no longer on my device. On the other hand Google has really done a great job with the new HTML5 mobile websites which now offer a pretty “App-Like” experience.

Either way the old Gmail app is going away on November 22nd 2011 according to Google. Google says that current users can continue to use the app but it will not be supported by Google and will no longer be available for download after Nov 22nd. Anybody sad to see it go? My guess is that you will be able to find it on third party sites for awhile before it goes away from m.google.com/mail.

eBay App Update v2.0.0.37 Now Available Through Beta Zone

If you are an eBay user you might like to know that the official eBay for BlackBerry just received a nice update for Beta Zone members. The update adds new features and also quite a few bug fixes. Early PlayBook Android Player Leaked Out By RIM

Some creative BlackBerry users noticed that RIM has hidden the BAR installation file for an early build of the BlackBerry PlayBook Android Player on their website. I won’t go into details of how it was ferreted out but we were told about it earlier this morning and N4BB posted a link to it and screenshots so now it is public information. You can download the early beta yourself and run it on your PlayBook. It does not currently have a back button but it does work. Just keep in mind this is a very early build and I have seen later builds that are much better. You will have to side load this installer so be sure to know how to do that before downloading

It is nice to see the biggest U.S Spanish T.V network release some good apps for their consumers.  This app brings you calendar of events, news, team stats, pictures and more.

RIM Posts Sample Signature Capture PlayBook App Source Code

One of the popular uses I can see for PlayBooks and other tablets is the ability to simply forms and procedures that are currently done on paper. I know many companies that are already streamlining forms on their BlackBerrys but the PlayBook’s larger screen allows for proper signature capture. While some companies do provide solutions for signature capture using BlackBerry smartphones they are kind of clunky. To show off how RIM thinks this kind of feature could work they released the source code of a sample app for developers to check out.

Here is how RIM describes it:

The BlackBerry PlayBook tablet with its 7" touchscreen provides an ideal form factor for capturing and collecting signatures.  The attached Signature Pad sample application demonstrates the best practices of capturing signature on the BlackBerry tablet such as touch point smoothing to make the signature look more like a paper signature, encoding signature data into JPEG format, saving signature data to the file system and adjusting the thickness of the line to match finger or stylus precision.

If you are a developer you can check out the sample Adobe Actionscript app code here. I could use a program that would let me take a picture of a document and sign it and then email it… I really wish RIM would keep on churning out proof of concept apps like these for both WebWorks and AIR apps for the PlayBook. They are a great way to introduce devs into different use cases.

Distimo Tells You What Words NOT to Use in Your App Name

 

A friend of mind sent me this interesting blog post by Distimo highlighting what words developers should not use in their application name. They base this on the fact that if you use these words you will not only get lost in the thousands of apps but will also lack any distinction. Personally I think that is a big deal because many users find recommended apps in App World by searching for a word or two of the name. On the other hand some apps specifically want to be confused this way.

After stripping away the noise they found that these were the top 25 words used in all app names across all of the major app stores for each device:

They also had some fun tracking how the worlds Angry and Birds have become more popular since Angry Birds first came out in December of 2009. Funny stuff… Check out the chart at the top of this article to see what I mean.

So devs just make sure not to call your app the Live Sexy Pocket City Girls Puzzle App or at least give me some credit for coming up with it.
