Free BeepUs App Makes Push to Talk BBM a Reality
I have always hoped that RIM would add Push to Talk or other voice calling features into BBM. So far RIM has just made it a little simpler to send voice notes but nothing near a full push to talk with presence solution. That has not stopped Tuk Digital Solutions from trying. I noticed a few friends on BBM were using BeepUs and decided to check it out. The free BeepUs app uses the new BBM social network APIs to allow you to have free Push to Talk conversations with your BBM friends.
I am not sure how well this will work continuously since RIM does have some limits on the transfer size and continuous connections on BBM but the concept is awesome. If you like sending voice notes or using Push to Talk you will love BeepUs . Hopefully Tuk keeps on adding new features to the app!

International BBM Hackathons in Bangkok, Amsterdam, & London This Month
Back in September we told you about a bunch of the upcoming BBM Hackathons for developers. Then we did not have the dates and details on the international events and it turns out there are three this month starting tomorrow! Planning very far in advance, Luke just posted the dates on RIM’s developers blog:

BlackBerry Messenger actualizado a versión 6.0.1

RIM Starts Rolling Out BBM v6.0.1 Which Helps Find & Share BBM Connected Apps
RIM has announced that they are starting to roll out BBM v6.0.1 today which is a slight upgrade to the official current version 6.0.0.129. This new version has been in the beta zone before since the beginning of last month and includes some small tweaks. It mainly adds a new automated way to search for BBM connected apps in App World along with making it easier to share.
The key changes include:
- Explore BBM-connected Apps – BBM users will now be able to pull up “Explore BBM-connected Apps” from a menu in the BBM Contacts screen. This action is designed to automate a BlackBerry App World storefront search for “BBM” by redirecting users to a list of up to 25 of the most popular BBM-connected apps available.
Sharing App content with your BBM Contacts is easier – Many BBM users have told us that they love sharing app content with their BBM friends who use the same app, but they also wanted to share content with their BBM friends who don’t have the app. BBM v6.0.1 is designed so that you can now share app-specific content with your BBM contacts regardless of whether your contact has the app installed.
For example, foursquare users may want to share a tip or badge they’ve recently earned, or Huffington Post users may want to share a breaking news story with their BBM contacts. Your friends or contacts will also be prompted to download the BBM-connected app if they don’t have it installed.
- Include BBM v5.0 users in application invites – Now you can include even more friends in the fun! You can now invite BBM v5.0 & BBM v6.0 contacts to join in the fun and share BBM-connected app experiences. Your BBM v5.0 contacts will be prompted to download BBM v6.0 in order to access BBM-connected apps. For users new to BBM v6.0 and BBM-connected apps, here’s a quick rundown of some benefits to upgrading (make sure to read our BBM 6: Apps Made Social blog post for more information).
- Inviting BBM friends to experience your favorite apps
- Chatting with BBM contacts from inside BBM-connected apps

BBM Social Platform SDK v1.0 Comes Out of Beta for WebWorks
RIM has updated the BBM Social Platform SDK out of Beta for WebWorks developers. Usually they would just promote the beta but this release includes some updates. The new gold release v1.0 of WebWorks BBM SDK includes:

BBM Generation Protégé Challenge Part I Contestants Selected – Check Them Out!
We told you before about the BBM Generation Protégé challenge that RIM was sponsoring to connect youth with celebrity influencers. Well the results are in for the first challenge that the celebrity influencers put out and I the responses are pretty cool. The results for the first challenge in the six categories come in both text and video form and you can find them on the BBM Challenge homepage by click on the celeb influencer and then selecting to view their protégés. Salesforce HTML5 App Preview – Groupon & Salesforce Adding BBM Integration
Salesforce is working on adding an HTML5 mobile app for their service and it looks like its coming. They just gave a demo of it running in the PlayBook browser and it looks great. They are working on a WebWorks version of it but they need to find a way to wipe it remotely. They also stood up with Groupon and showed off BBM integration with their apps. Groupon let you chat or share a deal over BBM and Salesforce is adding it to Chatter.

BBM 6.0.1 & App World 3.0.1 Maintenance Releases Coming Tomorrow?
We just heard from a solid source that RIM is planning on rolling out maintenance releases for both BlackBerry Messenger and BlackBerry App World tomorrow (October 11th). App World v3.0.1 is supposed to include general performance enhancements to application response time with no new features. BlackBerry Messenger v6.0.1 is going to be available for OS 5.0+ devices and includes Social Platform API changes and general performance enhancements with no new features.
When they go live we will let you know along with the full change log. Keep an eye out for them and let us know!

Rumor: BBM for Android Caught on Camera Again…
The saga continues with yet another set of pictures showing BBM running on Android. The last set were quite grainy and looked suspicious since they used a screenshot that RIM had posted previously. Now we have yet another set coming from TechnoBuffalo coming from a tipster who claims to work at RIM. Here is what he had to say as commentary about the current and previous images:
I work for RIM and I was shown the latest version of bbm for android. I ran the app on the blackberry android dev phone.( The dev phone feels very cheap and unstable and the front four buttons have just been stuck on. I don’t believe this phone will ever be released to the public.) The latest version certainly looks better than the previous version.
The tipster also said that the previous screenshots that were suspicous due to using a default screen were because “the Nicole account in the previous photos is the default account for BBM Testing.” The tipster also said that an iOS variant is under consideration and this BBM for Android might be coming as early as DevCon this month.
This is definitely still in totally unconfirmed rumor land for now but hey it is fun to speculate. I am undecided on if BBM on Android would help or hurt RIM’s brand but they definitely would immediately become the largest cross platform mobile IM service. That could give them some serious pull on other platforms. On the other hand it might be a segway for users to leave their BlackBerrys.
On the other hand RIM’s former Director of Developer Relations, Mike Kirkup, clearly told us along with quite a few others that BBM for other platforms was not on the roadmap at BlackBerry World. Maybe things have changed since May?
PS: Anybody else finding the stuck on buttons on the Android device a bit odd? Something just seems fishy here. Why wouldn’t RIM be testing on an actually available Android device. If you know your Android phones let us know what you think the device looks like in the comments!

Its Monday and with it comes the weekly rumor grind. First up this week are some intriguing yet uninformative purported images of an Android device running BBM. Very little is shown off other than a homescreen shortcut along with a default PINH and a status of BBM SDK Demo. Check it out and let us know what you think of it!

Incremental Native App Updates Extracted from Latest Official OS
The latest OS 7.0.0.400 which was officially released by Orange France for the Curve 9360 has come loaded with a bunch of small incremental app updates. rr_yy extracted quite a few of them for either OS 7 or both OS6 & OS7 and made them into OTA installs. They seem pretty stable but PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK!

UberSocial Adding BBM Social Integration to Twitter Client
Update: We just received confirmation from two other beta testers and BerryReview readers that the UberSocial private beta definitely does have BBM Social integration
The popular UberSocial BlackBerry app looks like it is getting BBM integration soon. Raed pointed out to us a post by BerryArab showing off an upcoming beta version of UberSocial with BBM integration. It seems like it lets you update your BBM status or personal message when you use UberSocial. Kind of cool and definitely a feature I think UberSocial users will appreciate.

Wikitude Augmented Reality browser and BlackBerry Messenger - cool or creepy?
The other night, a curious thing happened: I got a BlackBerry Messenger contact request. That in itself is nothing really out of the ordinary; my BlackBerry Messenger bar code is floating out there on the internets. I almost alwasys ignore the contacts I don't recognize. No, this request came via the Wikitude Augmented Reality browser on this BlackBerry Torch 9850 that I just reviewed. A gentleman named Dustin saw my BBM name in his Wikitude browser and used the application to make the BBM contact request. Figuring that there are very few Joseph Holder's out there with BlackBerry OS7 devices, Justin correctly guessed that I write for CrackBerry.com. We had a brief conversation, and I got to feel like a (rather) minor celebrity for a bit.
The whole exchange got me to thinking. Is finding new BBM contacts using the Wikitude browser cool or a little creepy? When we discussed the feature on one of our podcasts, I remember thinking that I was leaning toward the creepy side. After this one encounter with the service, my mind is made up. Finding new people through the Wikitude Augmented Reality Browser is not cool; it is very cool.
We've already seen a couple of videos demonstrating how to find a person's BBM contact using the Wikitude AR browser - and indeed find a person. After starting the AR browser, selecting the BlackBerry Messenger world view will show you visible BBM contacts within a certain distance. Turning around in a circle, you can actually see where those BBM users are in relation to you. Tapping one of the tags starts the standard BBM invite request. In many ways, adding contacts through the Wikitude browser is just one of the many, many ways to add a BBM contact.
How people will actually use this feature remains to be seen. Research In Motion has focused its demonstrations in the business setting. Think of a business meeting on the golf course. I know it's cliché, but a lot of business still gets done on the back nine. Let's say you want to add your new client, Bill, to your BBM contacts. Just find him in the Wikitude browser and add as a contact. No fumbling around with cameras and barcodes needed. Sure there are many ways to add a BBM contact; using the Wikitude browser is just cooler.
Now imagine that you've lost track of Bill. After finishing the 18th green with a 3-putt bogie, Bill just ...disappeared. Remembering that you just found him in the AR browser, you start Wikitude and soon meet up with your client in the clubhouse. After that round, Bill needed a bit more than a soda to quench his thirst.
Me, I think the Wikitude Augmented Reality browser will be used for flirting. Think about it. Gazing through the Wikitude browser, you spot an attractive person sitting across the bar/club/pot luck dinner. Even better, there's a BBM contact tag right next to them on the screen. You tentatively send out a BBM contact request and start up a conversation.
This isn't out of what is already ordinary for BlackBerry Messenger. In Saudi Arabia, it's not uncommon for single men to stencil their BlackBerry Messenger bar code to the back of their vehicle. Why? To meet girls, of course. Interested parties can scan the code and start a conversation.
First and foremost, you are in complete control over who sees you in the Wikitude browser. When it comes to being found in the AR browser, you can choose to be invisible; visible only to your existing contacts; or visible to the world. At any time, I can change how others' Wikitude browsers see my BBM contact information. By default, the Wikitude browser is disconnected from BlackBerry messenger. To make yourself visible to the Public (BBM name, avatar, and status message), you'll have to connect Wikitude to BBM and set your status to Public. Both options are found at the top of the Wikitude app's settings (inside the Wikitude app, press the menu key and select Settings).
Okay, you say to yourself, I can use the Wikitude Augmented Reality browser to find and be found by other BBM users. I even have control over who can see me. But what if one of my new contacts is a jerk, contacting me at all hours of the night? BlackBerry Messenger has had that one covered for a while. It's very simple to delete a BBM contact (highlight the contact, press the menu key, and select "Delete Contact"), and if the person tried to add you as a contact again, it's a simple matter to block all future requests as well.
In this way, BBM is superior to text messaging. Giving out a number so a person can SMS message you means they can always contact you for as long as you have that phone number. In my experience, it is a huge headache trying to get the phone company to block specific numbers. With BBM, you're just a few simple clicks away from blocking someone from messaging you forever.
Perhaps the reason we are wary of finding new BBM contacts using the Wikitude Augmented Reality Browser is because it is a brand new thing. There are no rules for its use, no guidelines to follow. Manners and politeness are extremely important in both the business and social worlds. But even the great Amy Dickinson might pause for more than a moment when asked for advice on this subject.
Therefore, it is up to us to define what is appropriate and what is not. For example, if you change your Wikitude settings to allow your BBM location data to be Public, I feel that means that you are willing to get - actually expecting to get - BBM contact requests from strangers. I've met some interesting - albeit random - people in forums and chats around the internets. Is this all that different? At the very least, you'll always have a conversation starter: how much you love your new OS7 BlackBerry Smartphone.
On the other hand, I feel the generic "[BBM Name] would like to add you as a contact" message sent when adding a new contact is woefully insufficient for this purpose. Unless you're sitting face-to-face with your potential contact, you should introduce yourself in the contact request message. How that introduction is made is up to you, but ones that begin, "I've been watching you for the last two hours..." will most certainly find their contact request Declined and Blocked.
So where does that leave us? The Wikitude AR browser gives us the chance to add and be added by contacts that we might not never encounter without the service. It gives us yet another BlackBerry Choice for adding new BBM contacts. It lets us find Bill - our golfing client - at the 19th hole.
Is making your BBM self available to be found by others really all that scary? You always have the option to make yourself invisible. You always have the option to decline or ignore a contact. You always have the option to delete and possibly block a contact.
Ultimately, the decision to use the BBM features of the Wikitude Augmented Reality Browser is up to you. Certainly, there are bound to be some awkward moments as we as a BlackBerry community begin to decide just what is impolite, rude, or irritating. On the flipside, those who choose to use the BBM features will be the ones who will define its etiquette. Quite literally, finding contacts using the Wikitude AR browser will be what we make of it.

BlackBerry Messenger v6.0.1.15 Released in Beta Zone
RIM has gone ahead and updated the version of BlackBerry Messenger available in the Beta Zone this week. This update brings us to v6.0.1.15 though it comes with a big caveat. They are asking users of BBM Music to NOT upgrade to this version. My guess is that is because of incompatibilities which is not promising. This is what RIM had to say about the update:

BBM Music Needs “Thumbs Up/Down” Song & User Ratings
I have more or less replaced my Slacker listening with BlackBerry Music since yesterday and I have to say I am impressed. I have found some great songs from BBM friends and contacts that I would never have heard otherwise. I find it interesting that my friends tend to avoid the latest Top 100 hits to define themselves and rather are choosing some classic favorites. The thing it not all of them have anywhere near my music taste or simply have bad taste… That is why I am really hoping RIM throws in some social voting options in BBM Music.
RIM does let you ignore songs or ignore songs from an artist that you don’t like but I wish they made my preference more transparent. Wouldn’t it be slick if you could see if users like the songs you selected or not? Maybe a sort of Rotten Tomatoes style “rotten meter” to show what others thought of your song. I love that it shows you how many times people listened to your songs but I want more. Simply leaving a comment on the song is just not good enough. I have been playing with the idea of using some sort of ASCII emoticon to simulate votes but don’t think it will work well unless RIM integrates it natively.
I will give you a walkthrough and more in depth review of BBM Music hopefully today or next week but until then I am really liking the service. The music player puts the native BlackBerry Media Player to shame and really works nicely. I have to say RIM put quite a bit of work into the app and usability is really nice and solid especially for a beta product.
Still I am really looking for things like the ability to show what I am listening too in BBM Music on the BBM status message or be able to keep a record of the songs I liked by my friends without adding it to my songs. If you have been using BBM Music let us know what you think!
