International BBM Hackathons in Bangkok, Amsterdam, & London This Month

Back in September we told you about a bunch of the upcoming BBM Hackathons for developers. Then we did not have the dates and details on the international events and it turns out there are three this month starting tomorrow! Planning very far in advance, Luke just posted the dates on RIM’s developers blog:

My guess is it might be a bit too late to sign up for tomorrow in Bangkok but you may want to try out Amsterdam and London if they are local. Check out the details at bbmappshackathon.com.

Devs Share Their Stories from BBM Hackathon Events on Video

 

RIM started an interesting new video series on YouTube highlighting some developers that have attended their recent BBM Hackathons. RIM Running Internal Developer Hackathon This Month!

For years I have been saying that RIM needs to start encouraging their internal BlackBerry developers to create slick BlackBerry apps. I have heard some rumblings that RIM was making strides in this direction but this confirms it. RIM is throwing their FIRST internal 24 hour Hackathon on August 26th and 27th. They are letting developers, programmers, and hackers at RIM develop whatever they want for the Hackathon and RIM’s top developers will judge the results. I am really hoping this sparks some awesome apps from developers at RIM. I know it is a bit competitive with 3rd party developers but most of the best BlackBerry apps come from RIM. One idea would be RIM simply giving their internal developers a cash or other prize and open sourcing the Hackathon winners projects for all BlackBerry devs to benefit and learn from.

Here is the email RIM sent out to all of their “Cognoscenti” inviting them to the Hackathon:

Hey RIM Cognoscenti,

RIM’s first internal 24 hour hackathon will take place at the end of the summer term, on August 26th to 27th. That’s right, this is one week away! Programmers, developers, and hackers are all welcome to come out and hack up whatever they’d like. We’ll have developers handy to help out those who haven’t coded before and if you’d like to work in a team we will help you find partners. At the end of the 24 hours there’ll be top RIM developers judging and a chance for you to show off your creativity and programming skill.

Thanks to the generous support of David Yach, CTO, and assistance from the members of the Developer Relations team, we’ll have things to eat and copious amounts of beverages to keep you going for 24hrs.

So come out for a weekend of hacking, developing, and programming!

NYC BBM Hackathon Wrap-up – Developer Collaboration

 

With all the craziness surrounding the BlackBerry 7 device launches and the reviews for today we missed posting a wrap up for the BBM Hackathon last week. Day one was awesome and day two followed through with many of the devs showing off their work as a sort of skeleton app. What I was more or less seeing was the type of app a developer could expect to create over a weekend with the basic functionality for a app concept.

To give you an idea of some of the app ideas here are some of the ones that were presented:

All in all I am pretty excited to see what devs do with these apps in the next few weeks. Practically all of them were committed to bringing their app to market and RIM plans on helping the devs get their apps into the 2011 BlackBerry Developer Challenge. They also heard developers loud and clear that RIM needs to help improve communications between developers so they can help each other out. The level of collaboration we saw at the Hackathon was amazing and I think RIM needs to do whatever they can to help foster that. It was great to see the RIM employees communicating directly with BlackBerry developers to foster the development of better BlackBerry apps and showing RIM how they can improve the development process.

I was also glad to see how well all of the BlackBerry developers got along. I know many of the devs made great contacts while at the event that will help them succeed as BlackBerry developers. Now we just need that collaboration to work on a larger scale.

So who plans on competing in the next BlackBerry Hackathon?

BBM Hackathon Team BerryReview Pics & Update – PickleBack Shots

 

The fun continued all day yesterday with the BBM Hackathon here in NYC. The morning started off well as you saw in our articles and throughout the day RIM was available teaching and helping developers to create their BBM powered apps. There was some hardcore coding going on throughout the day enhanced with TJ’s introduction of “The Goose & Redbull” with each developer working on their own BBM powered project. Happy hour was a blast especially when Team BerryReview discovered the house shot of the Ace Hotel where the Hackathon event is taking place. It is called the PickleBack which involves a shot of Jameson followed by a shot of straight up pickle juice. I kid you not.

RIM also had some dolls that each team was supposed to draw up. RIM had split up the developers into groups named after the boroughs of New York City and we ended up watching Team Staten Island (odd right?) coding the night away. Today is the last day of the Hackathon so we should have more info for you all soon!
