RIM España ha publicado en su canal de Youtube los vídeos de las ponencias del BlackBerry Innovation Forum 2011 que se celebró en Madrid la semana pasada. Si no pudisteis asistir no dejéis de visualizar los vídeos de las ponencias, las tres sin desperdicio.

La primera fue la de Eduardo Fernández @efernandez, Director General de RIM España, donde nos desgranó algunos de los datos y aspectos de RIM y de toda su plataforma BlackBerry.

La segunda del emprendedor y empresario Martin Varsavsky @martinvars, muy amena y llena de grandes verdades. Por cierto a Martin Varsavsky hace ya algunos años le ayudamos en algunos problemas con su cuenta de BIS

Y la tercera de Enrique Sarasola @sarasolakike, empresario ahora del mundo hotelero y donde nos comentó como en un sector tan copado como es el hotelero, es capaz de innovar en su cadena de hoteles Room Mate Hotels en aspectos como es el servicio, presentación y diseño, redes sociales, presencia online… Sin duda alguna después de la presentación te daban ganar de ir un par de días a disfrutar de las bondades de sus hoteles.

DevCon Americas 2011 Highlights: A Developer’s Perspective

For the fourth year in a row, I headed down to the San Francisco area for the annual BlackBerry Developers Conference (DevCon). By now many of you will have read the announcements and press releases so instead of rehashing them here let me share some first-hand experiences and highlights from the perspective of someone who has been developing for BlackBerry for a while now.

Lots of new faces at RIM. Surprisingly or not, many familiar faces of senior RIM execs from previous years were no longer to be seen. Clearly, the winds of change are blowing in Waterloo. I am hoping and crossing fingers that the new senior management steers the ship in the right direction.

The Android Player. One word for this one: amazing. The idea of the Android player is to run existing Android app on the Playbook, and subsequently on BBX devices. During DevCon RIM reps were manning booths that helped developers do exactly that – take their Android .apk files and show them how to transform them into Playbook apps.

RIM engineers have done an incredible job here. Even though the player was in beta all it took for the Android version of my app Viira to be repackaged as a Playbook app was a command line incantation – and that’s it. No code change required whatsoever and it ran beautifully without a glitch.

The Android player runs as a background system process so running Android apps on the Playbook is entirely transparent to the user – there is no need to manually start the player. The Android player will be pushed as part of the Playbook OS updates ensuring that Playbooks around the world have an up-to-date version. Expect to see the Android player in the 2.0 update to the Playbook.

No Java on BBX. To be honest, when RIM announced that Java will not be a supported way forward to develop on the BBX platform it left a lot of developers scratching their heads and wondering what the future of BlackBerry will look like. Has RIM gone mad? People were feeling anxious, to say the least.

One senior technical rep that I have gotten to know over the years put things in good perspective for me. With 70+ million non-BBX BlackBerry devices that will be around for some time to come (see no mention of QNX point below), does it make sense to worry [and get your panties in a bunch] yet? (stuff in brackets added by author)

Cascades: the way to the future. Developing rich next-generation user interfaces on the BBX platform rests on the shoulders of cascades brought over by RIM’s acquisition of The Astonishing Tribe (TAT). The demos presented clearly demonstrated some futuristic looks and capabilities. However being a bit of a sceptic here, from what I saw I wasn’t fully convinced that cascades will necessarily make it possible to develop bread-and-butter apps with ease. Only time will tell.

No mention of QNX devices. Normally, RIM gives developers a peak into the future of BlackBerry as early as possible. For this year’s DevCon, that glimpse did not include the much-anticipated and rumoured QNX devices. In short, QNX device availability was not mentioned at all. Does this mean that RIM does not plan on releasing those any time soon or does it mean they are simple mum to not distract potential buyers and upgraders to the new 9900 series and Torch models? Your guess is as good as mine on this one.

Conclusion

Overall, I have to say that this has been one of the most useful DevCons that I have attended. It was amazing to see the BlackBerry ecosystem mature from the “early days” of 2008 where people were trying to get their minds wrapped around what in retrospect looks like basic apps and concepts to the present where so many rich, complex and sophisticated applications and frameworks were presented. The RIM technical reps were incredibly helpful and that alone made the cost of admission well worth it.

BlackBerry DevCon 2011 Keynote Live Webcast Available Tomorrow

RIM is stepping out of character a bit with their BlackBerry DevCon 2011 keynote. Mike Lazaridis is set to keynote the event and we know big things are coming. RIM sort of confirmed that now by announcing a live webcast of the keynote tomorrow which will be streamed live. Keep in mind we will be covering the whole event live but feel free to keep both open in your browser.

Allí, tendrán la oportunidad, tanto de migrar su actual aplicación Android a la tableta BlackBerry PlayBook, como de transformar una aplicación web ya existente en una de pleno desarrollo, tanto para la tableta BlackBerry PlayBook como para los smartphones BlackBerry. A continuación, la aplicación podrá incluirse en el BlackBerry App World™.  Asimismo, los expertos del equipo de desarrollo de RIM y del BlackBerry App World estarán disponibles en el área App Express para ofrecer asistencia en caso de que sea necesario. Unity & Marmalade Gaming SDK Execs to Talk at BlackBerry DevCon

Earlier today Todd pointed out to me that RIM is holding a session at BlackBerry DevCon this month titled “Game Makers Dream: The BlackBerry PlayBook Native SDK.” The session is supposed to talk about the PlayBook Native SDK (NDK) and the power of the platform along with how easy it is to develop a successful game. While two execs from RIM will be speaking they will also be having:

Marmalade (Formerly airplay) has already released their beta SDK for the PlayBook leading to some slick games. Unity on the other hand showed off their stuff at BlackBerry World but has yet to release their SDK support for the PlayBook though promised to release it in the summer. With Unity talking at BlackBerry DevCon it makes me think there may be something to the rumor that Bla1ze @CrackBerry heard that Unity games may be coming as early as DevCon.

RIM to Help Developers Port Android & Web Apps at DevCon App Express

 

More details are fleshing out about DevCon this month in San Francisco. In their latest press release RIM clearly highlights that they are planning on helping Android developers port their apps to the PlayBook along with assisting web developers in porting their apps to both the PlayBook and BlackBerry smartphones. They will be doing this in a special App Express area at DevCon.

Here is how RIM describes it:

Android and web developers will be able to visit the App Express area at BlackBerry DevCon Americas. Here they will have the opportunity to either quickly port their existing Android app to the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, or transform an existing web application into a full-fledged app for both the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet and BlackBerry smartphones. Once done, the app can be submitted to BlackBerry App World(TM). Experts from RIM’s development team and BlackBerry App World team will be available at the App Express area to provide assistance. App Express opens on Monday, October 17 and runs through Thursday, October 20.

RIM Extends DevCon America $699 Rate Until September 23rd Using This Code

DevCon Americas 2011 Session Catalog Now Available – Lots of Goodies

RIM’s annual developer conference for North America is gearing up to be a doozie! They posted the sessions that will be available at the conference in San Francisco and there are loads of topics covered. They have some serious sessions on web and WebWorks development along with some interesting ones on the PlayBook Native SDK for gaming.

BlackBerry DevCon Europe & Asia – Cities & Dates Announced

RIM held their first DevCon in Asia at the beginning of this year which was successful from what I hear. They announced the new DevCon Europe and the second DevCon Asia at BlackBerry World this year but did not offer dates and locations at that time. They have now followed through with some of those details.

I am guessing by December they mean December 2011 which is just shy of a year from the beginning of this year. They have also moved DevCon Asia from Bali, Indonesia last year which makes me wonder if these will be traveling conferences… Either way RIM has extended their call for papers for both conferences to:
