I am still not sure if anybody at RIM has sat down with the folks in India and explained to them how BlackBerry encryption works. Regular consumer BIS and BBM conversations are NOT encrypted which means carriers and governments could view the contents if they had access to the data stream through the carrier. This is nothing new and has been the case for years. We covered this detail in an article back in August of last year on “What communication is encrypted on your BlackBerry.” To sum it up your regular BIS email is not encrypted between your device and the carriers BIS server only BES email is encrypted. BBM messages for consumers and most business users are also not encrypted but rather are scrambled using the same key found on any BlackBerry device unless a BES admin sets is differently which would stop you from BBM-ing anybody outside your BES.
The rocket scientists in India’s Department of Telecommunications seem to not have the technical savvy to read clear text on the wire so they have been hounding RIM to provide them a solution. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that RIM has given India’s DOT a solution to monitor email and BBM which essentially does what any carrier could do if they had the technical know how. India claims this is to protect from terrorists that are using “Encrypted Emails” the problem is RIM’s solution will not help them at all when it comes to this.
If a terrorist or any company uses a BlackBerry on a BES than all BES emails are encrypted and even RIM cannot give carriers access to them. In other words all they need to do to foil the brilliant rocket scientists at India’s DOT is setup their device on a BES server. There are tons of technologies just like this that India can also not monitor like SSL, VPN, PGP, etc but I guess India is still going to try.

The latest VP to leave RIM is John Vandermay who used to be the Vice President of BlackBerry Enterprise Server Software (BES). According to the Financial Post he is leaving for a Vancouver based mining company to be the VP of product development. While I am sad to see another VP go I am also glad to see that RIM is shaking things up internally with management changes. We have no idea why these VP’s are leaving or were forced out but one of the things I have consistently heard from RIM employees is that there was definitely a need for a “change of the guard” with executive management especially ones that were underperforming.
It will be interesting to learn if RIM is simply cleaning house or there are other reasons for the exodus. Some of that story will be told tomorrow during RIM’s after hours investors call and earnings report.

Always welcome news for me and the Enterprise BlackBerry faithful, late last week Google updated the Google Apps Connector for BES. It's great to see that this is a product Google plans to keep up-to-date and shows that BlackBerry and BES is critical to the business user.
In addition to supporting BES 5.0 service pack 3, version 4.0 of the Google Apps connector brings some of my favorite business features. Theses new features are Free/Busy look-up and support for read receipt.
The new support for read receipt is exactly what is sounds like. It allows for the tag to be added to an email messages that offers the sender to receive an acknowledgement that you did in fact receive the message.
The free/busy look-up is invaluable in a business environment. If you are looking to schedule a meeting or a conference call with several colleagues you can drive yourself crazy just sending out a meeting invite and having everyone propose new times because they have conflicts in their calendars. Free/Busy support allows you to view the availability of the attendees you're inviting, not their actual calendar details but just the times that they are free or busy.
Here's a screenshot of a calendar item I'm making for a CrackBerry meeting, after I add the attendees to the appointment I have the option to view the attendees availability.
Again these are welcome features for BES users in the Google Apps environment. Thanks Google keep 'em coming!
I am not sure how many companies are using the Google Apps Connector for BlackBerry Enterprise Server but it just got an update this month. MiBlackBerry spotted the news on Google’s website along with a change log. It really just adds support for the latest version of BES along with:

Support for BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 5.0.3
Release 4.0 of the Google Apps Connect includes support for BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 5.0.3. BlackBerry Enterprise Server version 5.0.2 is still supported as well.
Read-Receipt functionality
When the BlackBerry device gets a message that requests a read receipt, the device will prompt whether to send a read receipt, and whether to remember this setting. This feature is disabled by default. To enable this feature, set the following registry key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Apps Sync] "ReadReceiptEnabled"=dword:00000001
This setting will take effect the next time you restart the Dispatcher and agents. If a user previously had set a BlackBerry device to deliver a read receipt by default, when you enable this feature the BlackBerry device will deliver a read receipt without prompting the user.
Free-Busy
When scheduling a meeting on the BlackBerry device, users can view free/busy information for other meeting attendees. This information may be cached up to 15 minutes. This feature is disabled by default. To enable this feature, set the following registry key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Google\Google Apps Sync] "FreeBusyEnabled"=dword:00000001
This setting will take effect the next time you restart the Dispatcher and agents. If this feature is enabled, free/busy will be visible for all users who share their free/busy settings with the Google Apps Connector user, whether or not those users share their free/busy with an individual user. As a result, users may see free/busy schedules in BlackBerry that they would not have permission to see in the Google Apps web browser, and vice versa.

Some purported screenshots of a BlackBerry PlayBook running OS 2.0 have surfaced from MaxPDA showing some interesting things. First of all it seems to show that you can use Exchange ActiveSync, IMAP, POP, CalDAV, & CardDAV for mail, calendar, and contacts which is a huge change for RIM. It also shows deep connections with Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. The screenshots also show off an icon for the Android player. Take this all with a grain of salt but this could be very cool. It does make you wonder if the BBM icon shown is native BBM and if it will also include BES integration or it will use a different kind of BES like is rumored for the BlackBerry Colt QNX phone.

We have known for awhile now that RIM is working on a Microsoft SharePoint client for BlackBerry. There are a few third party solutions for SharePoint but RIM usually steps in when it comes to these kinds of things. Al over @CIO noticed that RIM has quietly launched the client and put up a product page on the BlackBerry website. From what we can tell the client is definitely not free and has quite a few requirements for it to work. We have no idea how much RIM is charging for the feature but I know quite a few SharePoint hooked companies that will jump at the opportunity. On the other hand I feel like RIM should have made this simply a free feature of BES Premium to give RIM yet another differentiator in the enterprise space.

The requirements are a bit complex requiring Windows Server 2003/2008 along with BES and the BlackBerry Social Networking Proxy server together with SharePoint 2007/2010 and BlackBerry devices with OS 5.0+. This new integration solution might be part of RIM’s closer relationship with Microsoft recently. It should be interesting to see how it plays out. RIM released a patch for all of the recent versions of BlackBerry Enterprise server. Its good to note that this vulnerability effects most new versions of BES from v5.0.1 to v5.0.3 MR2 though it was fixed in BES v5.0.3 MR3 for both Exchange and Lotus Domino. This is a pretty serious vulnerability that can be exploited by users visiting a website with a malicious TIFF or PNG image file or even an email with such an image. The only workaround disables all images so the patch is really your only bet.

I have long wondered how many clients RIM has on Lotus Domino. RIM seems to have a strong partnership with IBM and they obviously have customers requesting support for the platform. The latest rumor from CIO.com comes from an unnamed source who is familiar with the situation saying that RIM is considering shuttering BES Express for Lotus Domino.
It could simply be that RIM has seen very little interest in Lotus Domino for BES Express. It would have to be for companies that have Lotus but don’t want to pony up for a full BES license. I am curious if any of you are running on a BES with Lotus Domino. How does it work?

BlackBerry Balance should really be called BlackBerry You-Shall-Not-Pass or BlackBerry Wall, but I imagine Balance looks a bit better in the marketing materials. BlackBerry Balance isn't an application, it's an idea. Your Work life and Personal life can coexist on the same device, but they must always remain separate. Corporate data is sensitive data, no matter the size or operation of a company. Letting that data roam free amongst personal applications could be a disaster.
BlackBerry Balance is the wall that allows corporate data to be used on personal devices. This means a company can be secure in letting people bring their BlackBerry smartphone in "off the street" and use that phone on the secure corporate network. Running on a Blance'd smartphone or tablet, applications know when they're using work data; they won't allow it to be transferred to personal applications. Copy and Pasting work data into a tweet? Not with BlackBerry Balance you're not.
Balance demonstrates the high level of control, flexibility, and security offered to BlackBerry Enterprise Server administrators, executives, and users. BlackBerry Bridge, BlackBerry Balance, and the Enterprise Catalog of Applications in App World give network administrators choice without compromising security.
BlackBerry Bridge is a secure window allowing the BlackBerry PlayBook to view information coming from the smartphone. Many might see this application as a crutch, providing temporary access to messages, calendars, and the like. BlackBerry Bridge isn't going anywhere; it and native applications will exist side-by-side on the PlayBook. Bridge represents a choice for BES Admins.
The very first time a smartphone and PlayBook are connected the two devices work together to create the BlackBerry Bridge pairing key. If the two devices don't agree on the key or if the device goes out of Bluetooth range, Bridge'd applications are immediately locked. If the smartphone is connected to a BES, Bridge'd apps inherit all of the rules from the BES; and all of the data displayed on the PlayBook is considered work data.
Work data is stored in a separate, encrypted file system using the BlackBerry Bridge work key to encrypt and decrypt data that is cached or stored for use on the tablet. This is not a separate area of the file system, the work file system is completely separate from the personal file system. The BlackBerry Bridge work key is not stored in persistent memory on the PlayBook; the key is only stored on the smartphone. If the PlayBook is stolen or lost, work data remains encrypted as the key to decrypt it is not stored on the tablet.
Right now, this very minute, an administrator running BES 4.0 and higher has two options when it comes to BlackBerry Bridge. One: prevent Bridge from running on the smartphone, Two: permit it. Applications Bridge'd to the tablet inherit the same security rules as the BES connected phone. Cashed data on the tablet is encrypted with the BlackBerry Bridge work key.
In the near future, Research In Motion will release the PlayBook Administration Service as a free-add-on to BES 5.0; administrators will have the option to directly manage the PlayBook. BlackBerry Balance on the PlayBook, is a big part of that. Admins will be able to push data, apps, and security rules to the business side of the tablet while ignoring the personal side.
As with BlackBerry Bridge, work data is stored in a completely separate file system and encrypted. Work data and Personal data do not mix on a Balance'd PlayBook. At any time, the BES administrator can destroy business data and disassociate the device from the enterprise network without affecting the personal side of the device.
Research In Motion has always striven to give its customers the ability to choose - both at the enterprise and consumer levels. With a wide variety of form-factors, the BlackBerry appeals to many different people and usage scenarios. With BlackBerry Bridge and BlackBerry Balance, administrators have new choices when it comes to devices on the network. Personal smartphones can be added to the network without compromising security.
Admininstrators will soon have even more choices when it comes to deploying the BlackBerry PlayBook on their corporate networks. BlackBerry Bridge represents a simple and effortless expansion of the secure corporate network on to the tablet. With no intervention required, the corporate user's tablet can take advantage of the existing security rules on the smartphone to display information without compromising security. Or, with one small change to the BES policies, the administrator can prevent Bridge from being used on BES-connected devices.
PlayBook Administration Services and BlackBerry Balance will add an additional option of control for BES connected tablets. Even provisioning an individual user's personal BlackBerry PlayBook will be permitted with BlackBerry Balance and the security features built in to that system. In the end, it is up to the network administrator to determine how devices will connect to and use the corporate network. Bridge and Balance simply allow that administrator more control than ever before.
