I am always amazed by the different technologies powered by the QNX platform. The latest highlighted on the onQNX blog is a group working on an unmanned robot to send to the moon. This is all part of Google’s Lunar X challenge which requires contestants to land their rover on the moon and beam back videos to get the base $20 million prize. That goes up to $30 million if the rover can drive at least 5000 meters, survive two weeks of minus 182 degrees C, and take a picture of the Apollo landing site.
There is one team, The Part-Time Scientists, who have been working on that project in their spare time. The interesting twist is that they are using QNX to handle the real time activities of their rover called “Asimov”. They are supposedly considered to be in the top 5 of the 30 contestants who are most likely to succeed.
