BlackBerry Bold 9900 Released in Turkey by Turkcell

TurkCell Bold 9900

Turkcell, Turkey's largest carrier, has released the BlackBerry Bold 9900 for its customers and new buyers. For customers who are post paid subscribers to Turkcell, they can buy the device with two contract options: either for 12 months with monthly payments of 153 TL (82 USD) or 24 months with monthly payments of 90 TL (48 USD). Customers who opt for the contract also receive the full BIS packages from Turkcell. For those who wish to get the device without a contract, they can purchase it from Turkcell Communication Centres for 1700 TL (916 USD).

As of now Turkcell officials state no other new line BlackBerries will come to Turkey through Turkcell. However the official promotion of the BlackBerry PlayBook was made at Movenpick Hotel Istanbul by RIM and the device is expected to hit shelves next month. As of now there are 450.000 BlackBerry users in Turkey out of a population of 75 million, and 49 million who use mobile phones. RIM and the Turkish government came face to face when the Institution of Information Technologies threatened RIM with the of banning BlackBerry Service in Turkey when RIM denied providing the institution with the crypto codes protecting the privacy of the users. The issue was dropped when the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned the institution that many high level Turkish diplomats would be able to communicate securely if the service is banned.

CrackBerry Asks: Do you keep your BlackBerry PlayBook bridged all day?

BlackBerry Bridge is one of the big selling points of the BlackBerry PlayBook. It allows you to pair up your BlackBerry smartphone so you can securely access your contacts, emails, BBM and calendar. This is especially handy since the PlayBook still doesn't have any native versions of these apps on its own. Many users keep their devices bridged all day long so they have the ability to access these apps on either their phone or tablet.

Personally I don't keep my PlayBook bridged much at all. At times when I'm relaxing on the couch I'll pair up my devices and use the PlayBook for everything, but most times I am either in front of my computer or just use my device for my PIM apps. What we want to know is if you keep your devices bridged all day long or if you only do it at certain times. Pick the option in the poll above that best fits you, then leave a comment below letting us know what works for you.

DevCon 2011 App Now Available for the PlayBook

IMG_00000251RIM’s 2011 Devcon is in a few weeks and now they have release the BlackBerry 2011 mobile guide for the BlackBerry PlayBook.  The event is held in San Francisco this year the dates are Oct 18-20.   The app can be downloaded at the following link.  RIM announced during their last earnings call that they will have some previews of the future of their BlackBerry Smartphones with the new QNX based operating system so it should be an exciting event for attendees.

Description:

The BlackBerry® DevCon Americas Mobile Conference Guide is an easy way to look up the full breakout session catalog, read up on speakers and conference sponsors or create your schedule before getting to the event. You won’t miss a beat with the apps Event Messages and social channels – all this right from your BlackBerry device. This will be your onsite tool to fill out surveys, review conference maps, and even connect with other people attending the conference. This conference app will automatically update when there are schedule changes, and synchronize with your conference calendar in the My Scheduler tool on your desktop. Note: Access to some features are restricted to registered attendees of the BlackBerry DevCon Americas 2011 conference.

Sprint announces Voicemail 2 Text app just for BlackBerry users

Sprint officially announces their Voicemail 2 Text app specifically for BlackBerry users. The official press release can be read here but, here's the gist of it:

Wireless devices give consumers the freedom and flexibility to stay connected from anywhere. With voicemail-2-text apps, customers can efficiently identify and respond to messages in a manner that is convenient for them.

This week, Sprint launched a voicemail-2-text app for its BlackBerry users. Sprint BlackBerry customers now have an easy and convenient way to receive and respond to voicemails. With Sprint Voicemail-2-Text, customers can quickly and easily read their voicemail messages via email or text message and then respond to the message with just a simple click. In addition messages can be easily forwarded and saved – no more writing down messages or misplacing them.

The application has a 30 day FREE trial (standard text and data rates will apply) and after that it is available for a monthly fee of $1.99. After your trial subscription has ended, you can simply open the app and select Subscribe to continue using the service with the monthly fee. Sprint's Voicemail 2 Text app supports select Bold, Curve, Style, Tour & Touch (I'm thinking they mean the 9930 or 9860 here).

I haven't been able to get the download to complete as of yet (keep getting an error message halfway through the download). Curious if anyone else has gotten the app to download and how accurate the SMS messages are so drop a comment below!

Review: MediaKeyBooster for BlackBerry smartphones - 25 copies to be won!

mediakeybooster

Hey, how many convenience keys do you have on your BlackBerry smartphone? One… that’s too bad. I have four- that’s right; I’m using the Bold 9900 and I have four convenience keys. See, they’re all lined up on the right hand side. Okay, Okay, I know they’re media keys but, to me, they’re also convenience keys. This added functionality is brought to you by MediaKeyBooster, which lets you configure up to four apps, commands or shortcuts to each of your media keys. Volume up, volume down, even play/pause; they can all be made to do more than they were originally designed for.

For things like opening the Calendar, Brickbreaker, or your Browser, I didn’t have to look at my screen anymore; I could just click a button a few times and away I go. Now is this really added convenience or do I now have to remember which app was on which button and how many clicks I need? Let’s take a look.

MediaKeyBooster was made possible by Fonware Ltd; the same developer for the powerful shortcut app ‘ShortcutMe’, which allows you to create shortcuts and macros-assign up to 3 commands on a single convenience key or space key. MediaKeyBooster is available for BlackBerry smartphones running OS 4.5 or higher. The most current version available to the public is 1.4.1.0, which has a file size of 27 KB.

Cost: $0.99

Rating in CrackBerry App Store: 5/5

Rating in BlackBerry App World: 5/5

MediaKeyBooster is a fairly simple app to use and set up, once you figure out where the heck you can access it. There’s no icon to select, nor can it be found in the settings- under Third Party Applications. To set up, you have to press one of the media keys at least twice. What this does is bring up the set up page for that particular key and number of clicks. From here, you can choose to disable the app when a blacklisted app is playing (I’ll get into that a little bit later) and which app to open normally or alternatively. As the developer points out, some apps can’t be opened “the usual way”, so if you set an app to launch via Alternative Launching (by assigning either * or #), MediaKeyLauncher will attempt to launch it using “alternative methods”. If app runs in the background, set the Alternative Launching to _BG.

MediaKeyBooster button menu

BlackListed Apps are applications that require the media keys for functionality (music application, streaming radio app, etc). By adding these types of applications to the BlackListed app section of MediaKeyLauncher, the application will not launch anything as the volume being is adjusted. You could customize it further, by saying you will allow a button to be pressed twice while using a media application, but a third time will launch something else. Enable/Disable the ability to open the main configuration page after 5 clicks. Regardless, when using a media app, 10 clicks will always bring up MediaKeyBooster. Keep in mind that if you want to BlackList an application, it has to be running in the background. By adding _FG to the name of a selected app, it will be considered blacklisted only if it’s running in the foreground.

Managing the BlackListed apps is actually done in the main menu. To initially access it, press a media key multiple times to access the setup menu for that key – then press the back button. I know you’re thinking this is a hassle, but hear me out; there’s another option. In the main menu, press your menu button and select “Home Screen Icon?”, the app will ask you if you want to install as home screen icon for quicker access. Don’t worry, it’s only a mere 7kb. You will also see additional options such as; the ability to store/restore settings to/from your media card. The main menu lets you choose which button you want to work with; once selected, it jumps back to the first view you saw (by clicking on a media key that is).

Add MediaKeyBoosterIcon

MediaKeyBooster main menu

Quick access to applications is something that everyone wants, and MediaKeyBooster does deliver. I’m glad to see the app icon can be downloaded, but some people might not read instructions and get frustrated looking for one. It was easy to set up shortcuts and manage the blacklist. It should be noted that if you also had ShortcutMe on your BlackBerry smartphone, MediaKeyBooster can also be set up to launch ShortcutMe shortcuts or stop macros. If you’d like to pick up MediaKeyBooster, it’s currently available for $0.99 from both the CrackBerry App Store and BlackBerry App World (but you know, you should pick it up from the CrackBerry!).

Contest: We have 25 copies of MediaKeyBooster up for grabs. All you have to do is leave a comment on this post to be entered. Tell us which apps you want to creat a shortcut for? Contest ends this Sunday at midnight PST.

Video Poker for BlackBerry Smartphones updated to v2.0 - now with OS 7 support

If you want the casino feel without losing your paycheck, then check out Video Poker by Chef Delivered Ltd. The developer behind Solo Deck has just released a brand new version of the classic game for BlackBerry smartphones. This is specifally designed to take advantage of the higher resolution OS 7 devices.

Currently, it comes with three variations of video poker which you can play single or three-handed: Jacks or Better, All American, and Deuces Wild. Layout is pretty simple, you have your pay table on top and the cards layed out below. Players can bet from one to five credits on the random 5-card hand they are dealt and decide which cards to hold until the final draw determines the results. You can even change the overall look of the game by changing the skin and the designs for the card faces/backs. Plus there's a strategy mode where it will evaluate your hand to make sure you pick the "best" cards before the final draw.

Features

This is a pretty addicting game if you love poker and it runs smooth on all my devices. Video Poker is available for BlackBerry devices running OS 5 and higher for a low price of just $0.99. There is also an optimized version for the BlackBerry PlayBook and you can download either the free trial or the full featured version at just $0.99. Voicemail-2-text

I am a huge fan of voicemail transcription and I think it should be a default feature from all carriers. Sprint is moving in that direction with their Sprint Voicemail-2-Text service powered by Nuance Communications. The service is only for BlackBerry users and has been in testing since at least June of this year. It lets you get your voicemails as either emails or text messages and respond to the messages.

Evernote Beta v3.3.333 Adds Support For Offline Notes

Evernote

I have not been using Evernote consistently on my BlackBerry for one main reason. It did not let you take notes when you did not have a network connection. It was an annoying restriction that made taking notes on the NYC subway impossible so I resorted to the native notepad. Adam @CrackBerry noticed that Evernote has put out a new beta of their app that adds offline notes to the BlackBerry smartphone app along with a few other bug fixes.

This update lets you now load the app without waiting for a connection and view your notes when your cached notes with no connection. The first connection will sync the majority of the info to your SD card which may take some time the first sync so do it over Wi-Fi. Notes with a * by them are stored locally.

Check out the beta v3.3.333 of Evernote on their forums. Hopefully this goes gold soon!

BlackBerry PlayBook $299+$5 Shipping at 1SaleADay Today Only

1saleaday blackberry PlayBook

This is nowhere near the usually discounted sale deals you find on 1SaleADay but it is competitive with the pricing from Staples and Office Depot. I got an email this morning from 1SaleADay that they are carrying the BlackBerry PlayBook 16GB model for $299 with $4.99 shipping. Not a bad deal if you wanted to get it online though you might be better off just going to a Staples.

Check it out at 1SaleADay

RIM Says PlayBook Price is Holiday Promotion Not Price Reduction

playbook_02

With select retailers in Canada and the US discounting the BlackBerry PlayBook many are wondering if this will be done across the board. Right now RIM’s key launch partner, Best Buy in the US, has not discounted the device which makes many of us wonder what the story is. Turns out RIM told the BoyGenius that this is just a holiday promotion “intended to drive sell-through and increased adoption of the BlackBerry PlayBook.”

Full wording from RIM below:

The official retail price of BlackBerry PlayBook has not changed.  However, as mentioned on the Q2 earnings call on Sept. 15th,  we have a number promotional plans in place for the fall with our retail partners that are intended to drive sell-through and increased adoption of the BlackBerry PlayBook.  We are already starting to see some of these promotions being implemented in the form of instant rebates and gift cards within the consumer channel, and expect these promotions to continue into the holiday season.  The BlackBerry PlayBook has established itself as a high-performance tablet, and we are confident that these activities, along with the upcoming software upgrade, BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0, will help to generate an increase in demand and sell through of the BlackBerry PlayBook over the upcoming months.

Latest PlayBook Android Player Details Confirm What RIM Has Shown

 IMG_00000263

We know that RIM is launching the BlackBerry PlayBook Android Player shortly after DevCon in October but details around the Player are limited. Thing.co.uk got some details from DroidCon at the Easter European Mobile Monday Developer Summit in Romania and they show some of the limitations of the Android Player. Some publications are saying these limitations will be off putting but they sort of make sense for a virtualized player that is divorced from Google’s proprietary Android apps and services.

The thing is the whole purpose of the Android Player for the PlayBook is to bring the HUGE chunk of apps that would run just fine and make them super easy to port to QNX. I remember at BlackBerry World they were showing off 10+ apps that they didn’t even need the source code to run on the PlayBook. These are a majority of apps that are created for Android like the WordPress app I want or the IMDB app. The list could continue of apps that don’t use these API’s like: Twitter, Weather Apps, Amazon.com shopping, Radio streaming apps, sports apps, eBay, eBook readers, and much much more! Most of these apps would run just fine or would require small tweaks. I am truly hoping RIM creates a 1 click port and submit to App World app for Android devs… :)

Here are the details of what wont work:

RIM’s New VP of Developer Relations Alec Saunders Talks Out!

ITEXPO East 2010 - Alec Saunders

With Mike Kirkup leaving RIM as Director of Developer Relations there was a void RIM needed to fill. That void seems to have been filled by Alec Saunders, RIM’s new VP of Developer Relations and Ecosystem Development. Alec took some time to talk to the official BlackBerry Developer Blog about what he sees for the future of RIM’s BlackBerry OS on QNX and BlackBerry 7. His mandate is to drive growth for RIM’s BlackBerry OS QNX powered BlackBerry platforms which is exactly what we want to hear.

I am loving the fact that Alec Saunders is prolifically involved online and you can find out quite a bit by Google-ing his name. He comes with a history from Microsoft and QNX and has been through a string of companies since. Check out the full details on Alec Saunders on the BlackBerry DevBlog or follow him on Twitter.

Welcome to #TeamBlackBerry Alec! We wish you the best of luck and are rooting for your success!

RIM Hiring Developer Evangelists – Alec Saunders Wants to Win Devs Back

kidsuperman

We just let you know about Alec Saunders joining RIM as their Vice President of Developer Relations and Ecosystem Development. Alec went into a bit more detail about his new gig on his blog. It turns out that he joined RIM’s QNX subsidiary on July 25th as Vice President of Developer Relations and now he Vice President of Developer Relations for all of RIM. He truly sums up his job in one paragraph:

Over the last few days I’ve been in San Francisco at the Mobilize conference, and speaking with developers.   It’s clear from those conversations that the primary problem we face is lack of support from application developers.  My team’s job is to correct that – to win the hearts and minds of mobile developers again.

As we said before we wish Alec and his team the best of luck and will help in any way we can! Alec also mentioned that RIM is hiring Developer Evangelists which he describes as “technical articulate people with a passion for mobile platforms” which sorts of describes many of our readers including me. :) Contact Alec at alec dot saunders at rim dot com or on his blog if you are interested!

RIM gave Twitter for BlackBerry a nice overhaul in v2.0 but there is one feature I have been waiting for. The latest screenshot scored by N4BB shows the new Twitter for BlackBerry v2.1 that is coming. Also rumored to be included in the v2.1 update are:

I am excited to try out the new multiple account support soon!

BlackBerry Curve 9360 Now on T-Mobiles Website With UMA – Currently Out of Stock…

T-Mobile 9360

Today is the day T-Mobile told us they would officially be selling the BlackBerry Curve 9360 and true to their word the phone is now live on their website. The only catch is that it is currently out of stock… I am not sure what to make of that but at least the website confirms that it is $79.99 after a $50 mail in rebate. The other interesting thing is that the product description clearly specifies that it has both Mobile AND Wi-Fi calling which would mean it has UMA support. That is something that as far as I know is not included on the BlackBerry Bold 9900 from T-Mobile.

Check out the Black BlackBerry Curve 9360 on T-Mobile’s website or you can wait for the Merlot version that is coming soon on October 12th.

Best Buy Canada Brings Back “Free Phone Fridays” With Bold 9900

Best Buy Free Phone Fridays

It looks like Best Buy in Canada is throwing in some 3 year contract deals this fall with their “Free Phone Fridays.” According to MobileSyrup they will be discounting a new phone every Friday in October to $0.00 with a 3 year contract. The first to be discounted is the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and Torch 9810 on Telus, Bell, Virgin, and Rogers along with the Koodo Curve 9360. Not a terrible deal if you have to sign one of those 3 year contracts.

QuickelSoft Tasks Adds GTD Concepts to BlackBerry Tasks

373618 373619

I have been waiting for RIM to integrate some new GTD features into the built in Tasks app but they are restricted by what Exchange supports. Until then there are apps like QuickelSoft Tasks to fill in the gap. QuickelSoft uses the built in BlackBerry tasks and adds the ability to classify your tasks with tags and filter them based on those tags. Its much better than the simple structure that RIM gives you.

You can pick up QuickelSoft Tasks for $4.99 in App World

TELUS Canada Carrying Pink BlackBerry Curve 9360 for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

curve-pink-9360

We heard earlier that TELUS Canada would be getting a pink variant of the BlackBerry Curve 9360 but we didn’t have a time frame. Now we know from MobileSyrup that TELUS will be carrying it for Breast Cancer Awareness Month which is October. During that time TELUS will donate $25 per pink 9360 sold to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. It will be available online and in stores soon.

Now if only RIM would get around to releasing a crimson red version of the Bold 9900 :)
