Tales from the RIMPIRE: How a BlackBerry PlayBook replaced a laptop

Laptop replacement

As it was just a little over a year ago the PlayBook was announced, I thought it fitting to tell a tale of why I'm a proud member of the RIMPIRE. In the past few months I've had the opportunity to go completely PC-less. One case wasn't by choice while the other was. Now the million dollar question is can a person survive with limited access to a PC (not counting work) and use nothing but their PlayBook? You'll find out after the break.

Case #1 - Broken Laptop

Back in May I woke one morning to find my laptop's display dead. Now the truth was I needed to find another way to get my work done before I drove everyone around me crazy. While waiting for a replacement, I decided to rely on my PlayBook and BlackBerry during those couple of weeks hoping they would fill the shoes of my dearly departed desktop. Up until this point I'd only used the PlayBook for games and browsing the internet because of my own personal problems with the keyboard. Now I faced my demons and realized it wasn't so bad afterall.

My immediate challenge: writing posts. I couldn't just stop because my laptop had a boo boo. My solution? Documents to Go. Using the premium version on the PlayBook and the standard one on my device I wrote posts everywhere I could for just about every article posted in May: on the train, on the bus, in the lunchroom at work, and even on my comfy couch while watching TV.

I would start the post on my BlackBerry, snap a screen shot, and then use BlackBerry Bridge or File Browser to transfer or open the files on the PlayBook (or vice versa) to edit and post. After awhile, I realized how heavy my laptop was and having that burden lifted was a relief. Plus the added bonus of not dragging around power cords or burning my lap from the heat helped too.

Now I'm not going to bore you with the day-to-day tasks that followed. Using tablets is all about what you use it for. Since I'm the type of person who checks my emails, edits documents and spreadsheets, accesses chat rooms, plays games, and connects fo friends via social networking sites, the PlayBook fit nicely into my daily routine. Plus I loaded it up with TV Shows, Movies, and Books to take with me while commuting. I once debated over buying a netbook, well as you can tell, not anymore.

Case # 2 - Travelling

I decided to take it with me during my corporate training in Chicago and wouldn't you know it I didn't miss a beat. As a co-worker quietly read her magazine during the flight (laptop was packed away), I watched a movie, played a few different games, and read a few chapters of a book. At the hotel, I used Wi-Fi to connect to my company's outlook website and responded to messages.

What I loved most was bringing it to the training facility. The building had no cell service whatsoever but complimentary Wi-Fi. So while they lectured I tweeted (with Blaq), checked email, and caught up with the latest CrackBerry news all at the same time. Needless to say I was very happy that it lasted the entire trip without requiring a charge.

Now this was no easy feat mind you. I admit there were a couple of times I cheated and fired up the ol' laptop and plugged it into the TV to work. My hands were tied because one of the apps I reviewed that month required a PC and I needed to Photoshop out some personal information on another.

Since the BlackBerry PlayBook came on the scene, the question of whether they can truly replace a laptop has always been out there one way or the other. In my case it did. It's lighter with a longer battery life that also let me get work done, view YouTube videos, check my email, and BBM my friends while my device charged in another room. That's why I've been carrying it around instead of my laptop. I'm not kidding, I sat playing Dead Space in the doctor's office and almost missed my appointment. Now that is how my PlayBook replaced a laptop :).

So folks anyone out there have a similar experience (without the dead laptop of course). Sound off in the comments below.

CrackBerry Member Story: Hispanic Recruitment Services

Here at CrackBerry we love seeing innovative ways you guys are finding to use your devices. The BlackBerry PlayBook is pretty versatile, due to its small size, and people are finding many different scenarios where it makes sense for them to use one in place of other more traditional equipment. CrackBerry reader Heriberto sent us this email recently:

Just thought I would share this proud moment of mine. I serve as the Vice President of Hispanic Recruitment Services, Inc. www.hispanicrecruitment.com (still a start up company).

Also a faithful BlackBerry owner and proud user of the BlackBerry 9700 (waiting on AT&T to release the damn 9900). We are currently spearheading our video production and I am ecstatic to announce that we are using the BlackBerry PlayBook as the main source of video recording. (See photos attached.)

Through CrackBerry I decided to move forward with this product and have all the faith in the world that our final product will be great. Thank you for all your hard work and insight!!

The RIMpire is striking back!!!

Awesome! Thanks for sending this in to us Heriberto! Who else out there is using their PlayBook in a creative way? (No, paperweight doesn't count. :P) Let us know in the comments below. A couple more shots are after the break!

BIS 4.1 Update Brings PlayBook Support ?

We know that native e-mail for the PlayBook is going to be shown at devcon with a possible roll out soon after. The BIS 4.1 update was schedule for sometime this weekend in some area and it looks like some already have it. Ben noticed the following on the BIS site: “BlackBerry Tablet setup is not supported from this website. Please use your tablet to access e-mail.”

RIM has been criticized because they have built most of their business around being able to do e-mail better than the competition and having a tablet from them without native e-mail did not help the PlayBook.

So this is some good signs that we will have e-mail on our PlayBooks soon. What do you think?

Popular RSS reader Web Reader makes its way to the BlackBerry PlayBook

If you haven’t been using Web Reader on your computer, you should know that it’s one of the most amazing powerful RSS readers available. Not too long ago, Webreader made its way onto your BlackBerry PlayBook as one of the smoothest RSS readers I’ve seen – in either portrait or landscape mode. It’s not only about reading, it’s about management. You receive notification of new articles being posted, mark articles as read or as a favourite or even share and article through Facebook or Twitter.

Web Reader offers offline support so you can still read your RSS feed when you are not using your BlackBerry Bridge or connected to WiFi. I loved the little things, such as being able to sync with Google Reader, video playback support and being able to get a full screen view when I tap on an article twice. If you’re worried about the security of your Google account, Web Reader uses oAuth protocol; which provides clients with a way to access server resources for an end-user, without the end-user having to provide their login credentials. This RSS reader should have been on the PlayBook since the beginning.

Web Reader for the BlackBerry PlayBook is available for $2.99 from BlackBerry App World

Real Contact maps out BlackBerry Messenger contacts

Remember a while back when I asked you how precious your BlackBerry PIN was? I came across another service that expands upon the functionality of BlackBerry Messenger and potentially puts your PIN out there for the public to discover. Real Contact puts your BlackBerry Messenger users on the map, BlackBerry Maps to be exact, making them discoverable and locatable. Real Contact doesn’t make use of Google Maps, so make sure you have BlackBerry Maps installed (and BlackBerry Messenger 6, as well). The idea is to forgo the “Where are you?” messages and see how close your friends are to you.

Now while some of the information is pretty handy to have, some details that you see can be a little spooky; especially when you realize that others can see the same about you. If you’re worried about your own personal security, you can make your location and information as public, or private as you want it to be. Real Contact can also be used as a helpful reminder or notifier, as well. Contacts are displayed on the map, with their BlackBerry Messenger avatar showing up in a red or green marker (green indicates the contact is using the application, red indicates they are not). When looking at a contact on a map, you could potentially see detail such as; GPS coordinates, BlackBerry Messenger personal message, availability, signal strength and battery level. I guess that you can’t use the excuse “I can’t talk, my phone is about to die” anymore, especially if the other person can see you still have 83% power left.

Besides that, you can also set notifications when you are nearing a specific contact, address or when a contact is nearing you. This may help take the guessing game out of wondering when they will arrive. A contacts location is captured and relayed every 100 meters. Notifications go even further when you can set the application to let you know if a contact is busy, unavailable, finished with their phone call or has completed a calendar appointment- If you’re comfortable with sharing that type of information. It’s crazy how intuitive your contacts now seem to be, they’ll know the right moment to contact you and also know where you are. Not too shabby for a free service. You can download the application for free from BlackBerry App World.

Meet TOMPlayer - The Other Media Player

Emacberry, the creator of FileScout, has once again gotten the creative wheels in motion. Not satisfied with the native BlackBerry Media Player, he compiled a list of what functions he wanted from a media application and then got to work. The result, TOMPlayer, [T]he[O]ther[M]ediaPlayer.

The UI is simple (it's the first version so cut him some slack) and easy to navigate. With TOMPlayer, you can open any existing playlist (you have to create the playlist with another application such as FileScout) and listen to your audio files. TOMPlayer stores the last active playlist & track so whenever you exit the application and return, TOMPlayer will resume playback from that exact spot. This makes it an ideal application for listening to AudioBooks or longer playlists. The application is also integrated into the BlackBerry Menu list. By selecting 'TOMP: SONG_TITLE_HERE', you can easily see what song you left off at and bring the application to the foreground to adjust volume and such.

TOMPlayer is available for FREE and works on devices running OS 4.3 or higher (including OS 7 devices). Feel free to leave comments/thoughts below or head on over to the forum post dedicated to the app.

Carbon by Hedone Design - where simple becomes vibrant

Hedone Design knocks it out of the park again with their latest theme, Carbon. Featuring all of the style and class you expect from this developer combined with ultra-functionality, you're not only buying a theme, you're investing in a piece of art. Carbon fiber backgrounds are the perfect setting for the orange, gray, and blue splashes of color, making important features pop. Two home screens ensure that you can have the style that suites you best, either minimalistic with one user customizable icon surrounded by time, date, and important info - or an uber slick circular dock surrounding that same single icon. This amazing dock is like no other, with text based icons radiating out from the center, with sub-menus nestled hidden within. To add separation and definition to the layout, Hedone Design created curved battery and signal meters, encircling the middle icon.

Carbon is available for $7.99 and is compatible with most BlackBerry smartphones. Please remember, BlackBerry OS 7 devices do not have themes available yet as RIM has not released the updated Theme Studio.

RIM Providing India BlackBerry Monitoring Tools to Simplify What They Could Already Do

I am still not sure if anybody at RIM has sat down with the folks in India and explained to them how BlackBerry encryption works. Regular consumer BIS and BBM conversations are NOT encrypted which means carriers and governments could view the contents if they had access to the data stream through the carrier. This is nothing new and has been the case for years. We covered this detail in an article back in August of last year on “What communication is encrypted on your BlackBerry.” To sum it up your regular BIS email is not encrypted between your device and the carriers BIS server only BES email is encrypted. BBM messages for consumers and most business users are also not encrypted but rather are scrambled using the same key found on any BlackBerry device unless a BES admin sets is differently which would stop you from BBM-ing anybody outside your BES.

The rocket scientists in India’s Department of Telecommunications seem to not have the technical savvy to read clear text on the wire so they have been hounding RIM to provide them a solution. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that RIM has given India’s DOT  a solution to monitor email and BBM which essentially does what any carrier could do if they had the technical know how. India claims this is to protect from terrorists that are using “Encrypted Emails” the problem is RIM’s solution will not help them at all when it comes to this.

If a terrorist or any company uses a BlackBerry on a BES than all BES emails are encrypted and even RIM cannot give carriers access to them. In other words all they need to do to foil the brilliant rocket scientists at India’s DOT is setup their device on a BES server. There are tons of technologies just like this that India can also not monitor like SSL, VPN, PGP, etc but I guess India is still going to try.

Good luck folks!

Adobe Acquires Nitobi – Developers of PhoneGap HMTL5 Framework

PhoneGap build3

If you are a BlackBerry web developer you have probably heard of Nitobi and their open sourceHTML5 mobile phone development framework called PhoneGap. They help you package apps with HTML5 and JavaScript into cross platform mobile apps including BlackBerry. They just got a nice shot in the arm with an acquisition by Adobe. Not a bad deal if you are invested in PhoneGap as a developer.

It will be very interesting to see what comes of this as Adobe embraces HTML5 alongside Flash especially on the PlayBook which supports both. Check out the details on www.phonegap.com

Possible BlackBerry BBX (QNX OS) Name Confirmed in QNX Auto Summit Japan Slide?

QNX Auto Summit Japan BBX Slide

Rumors have been floating around for a bit now about what RIM will call their future QNX based OS when it migrates off the PlayBook and onto phones. It obviously cannot be called the BlackBerry Tablet OS anymore and CrackBerry posited that it would be called BBX merging BB with QNX. Now Kevin scored a slide from the QNX Auto Summit Japan presentation that seems to be pointing to the BBX name again.

My Japanese is nonexistent but you can clearly see it shows support for BBX, iOS, and Android. Let us know if you can figure out what it says!

RIM Acquires NewBay Cloud Based White Label Service

SkyDrive Skydrive2

RIM is on a roll with their acquisitions. The latest is the acquisition of NewBay which is a Dublin, Ireland cloud based service provider. They white label their solution LifeCache for cloud based services for storing, sharing, and organizing digital content like photos and video. NewBay has 200 of their own employees and currently has deals with T-Mobile US, Deutsche Telekom, Verizon, & AT&T.

Skydrive3SkyDrive4

This seems to be RIM’s answer to Apple, Google, and now Amazons cloud offerings for mobile. They even have a slick SyncDrive solution that competes with DropBox and SugarSync. It should be interesting to see how this plays out. Check out more details about NewBay at www.newbay.com.

RIM Explains Their Customer Feedback Loop & How to be Involved

RIM feedback loop

One of the things RIM is not really known for is listening closely to customer feedback at least from consumers. They have been getting MUCH better at this in the last few years with customer facing feedback solutions like their forums, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Beta Zone, and others. RIM did a nice job of explaining how their feedback loop works using an example of their BlackBerry Mobile Conferencing app.

Its actually an interesting read over on the BlackBerry business blog. Now I just wish that RIM could do more to show users that they are listening whether they are consumers, developers, business users, enthusiasts, etc. I get the feeling that RIM is now listening but they definitely need to do more to show that they are acting on the feedback. For example, if a developer or even a consumer gives feedback about a bug or feature enhancement then let the world know when it is fixed or improved or if it cannot be done… They obviously cannot implement all suggestions but showing responsiveness needs to go beyond the Beta Zone limited applications.

For example, it was awesome that RIM added the ability to add to an existing contact in BlackBerry OS 7. On the other hand take the Verizon BlackBerry Bold 9930 back button bug and provide users a solution even if the carrier does not authorize the issuance of a new OS.

Last but not least these are the locations RIM recommends for customers to provide feedback on BlackBerry products and solutions:

Its interesting to see their forums and Twitter are not on the list…

Kik Cross Platform Messenger is Back for BlackBerrys

Kik Back

Kik made a name for themselves as a pretty solid cross platform IM client similar to BBM. They got into some serious business with RIM ending up with feuding lawsuits and RIM pulling Kik’s code signing keys. Terry let us know that Kik is now back and sent out an email to their BlackBerry users about a new Kik version for BlackBerry. It seems like this version is a J2ME app which does not require BlackBerry code signing keys but means it will have very little integration with the rest of the BlackBerry OS. On the other hand it lets Kik make a statement like:

Note: RIM has not endorsed or approved this application for installation on any BlackBerry devices.

BlackBerry Fanboy Video Contest Finalist #5: Inceptionally Fast

Ok CrackBerry Nation, here it is. Our fifth and final finalist video in CrackBerry's BlackBerry Super Fanboy contest. Following up our first, second, third and fourth finalist entries (which were all AWESOME), this one is titled Inceptionally Fast and comes to us from Shahriyar Ali, who lives in India. BlackBerry is taking off in India and this proves there are BlackBerry Super Fans there... it's awesome to see an entry submitted far from CrackBerry HQ.

Inceptionally Fast is pretty darn clever. Inspired by the movie Inception, the story explains the BlackBerry infrastructure showing how fast and secured data is transferred from beginning to end. Action packed and awesome, it's yet another amazing entry in this contest. Watch it above and sound off in the comments!

That's it for our finalist videos. Getting down to the final five wasn't easy - we had some other great entries submitted which we'll make live shortly on CrackBerry's Youtube Channel for your viewing pleasure (we'll follow up with some shout outs). I'll be following up later today with a post showing off the five finalists in one post... we'll want you to post in the comments with your favorites... and from there I've assembled a new judging panel that's going to spend the night trying to sort out who the ultimate winner will be. It's not going to be easy.

RIM shows off the BlackBerry Torch 9850 and 9860 in new commercial

RIM has posted up their latest commercial, this time showing off the BlackBerry Torch 9850/9860. The theme of the ad is "Break Free" and shows off some BlackBerry use to get away. This is the first ad we've seen dedicated solely to the all-touch device but most likely not the last. While it's been a bit overshadowed by the BlackBerry Bold 9990, this is a good reminder that the 9850 and 9860 are still out there :-)

Orange and T-Mobile UK release the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and Torch 9860

BlackBerry Bold 9900 and Torch 9860

As you may have noticed from my BlackBerry Buyer's Guide that T-Mobile and Orange had yet to release a BlackBerry 7 device, leaving our CrackBerry users on those networks out to dry. Today however, that has changed as both T-Mobile and Orange have pulled a double-whammy and released both the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and the Torch 9860.

On Orange the Bold 9900 is available free from £41 a month on a 24-month contract and T-Mobile has it free from £40.85 per month on a 24-month contract. With the Torch 9860 you can get the Bold 9900 free from £36 a month on a 24-month contract on Orange and £35.74 a month on a 24-month contract from T-Mobile.

T-Mobile and Orange can now rejoice that they can finally get their hands on some BlackBerry 7 devices. It's not surprising to see both networks release the devices at the same time since they merged a few years back, to create Everything Everywhere, but still trade under their own names. The merge means that customers on each network can roam on the other network without being charged.

BlackBerry Bold 9900

The final network to release the BlackBerry Bold 9900 is Three UK. The network release their second BlackBerry 7 device to their list of BlackBerry devices and is available for free on all three of their tariffs. Three UK also have the Bold 9900 available on pay as you go for a low, low price of £399.99. The lowest price I've seen for the BlackBerry Bold 9900 so far. It's even cheaper than the Torch 9810!

Review: Blaq for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Blaq for PlayBook

When the review for the BlackBird Twitter app for the BlackBerry PlayBook went up, someone made a comment that they wanted to see a Blaq review. Up until that point, I had only seen Blaq on BlackBerry smartphones, and thought it was a decent Twitter application. To be honest, I was already bouncing back and forth between Twitter for BlackBerry and another Twitter client and didn’t feel the need to pick up a third. Had I actually done so, I think that Blaq would have been installed on my BlackBerry PlayBook the moment the app was made available. As I had mentioned in the BlackBird review, accessing Twitter from the PlayBook was (at the time) limited to a basic mobile view – making it painful to use. Even with a new beefed up mobile site, I’ve quickly taken to Blaq to help me keep connected to Twitter. Kisai labs has recently updated Blaq with a slew of new features and fixes, making in (in my opinion) the most functional (and sexy) PlayBook Twitter client yet.

With Notifications, paused timelines and multiple account access, Blaq may have you saying “Holy Tweet!” As lame as that just sounded, let’s hope you keep reading.

Blaq for the BlackBerry PlayBook was developed by Kisai labs, the same grey matter behind the image downloading ‘Show Me the Images’ and the games ‘Photo Quest’ and ‘Mancala’. Like I mentioned earlier, Blaq was recently updated to version 1.5 and has a file size of 2.2 MB.

Cost: $1.99

Rating in BlackBerry App World: 4/5

Blaq main view

Blaq for PlayBook expands upon the design of the Blaq app for BlackBerry smartphones. Seeing the menu on a screen this size really shows off the beautiful layout. On the left side, you will see your timeline, mentions and direct messages that can be viewed quite fluidly. No lagging could be seen when scrolling up and down through the Tweet. Just as you would see with Twitter, each entry shows the users avatar, name and when the tweet was posted. Now with Blaq, you can actually see new Tweet getting added to the timeline, with the time showing “moments ago”. Blaq also has a small “Real Time” icon near the bottom right corner of the screen, which has a square that glows green when connected.

On the right side of the screen, you can see your Profile picture and an entry field with which you can tweet away. Added features to this include a convenient “Add photo button”, a character countdown and a quick look at your last tweet. When selecting Add Photo, you can either take a picture or select one from your files. If you want to mention someone in a tweet, all you have to do is type @ to see a popup containing all of your friends. Down the right hand side of the menu are your various views that let you manage your mentions, direct messages, lists and search options (view trends or search through tweets/people). Now you don’t have to stare at Blaq constantly in order to keep on the latest. You can set up native notifications to appear, reminding you to head back to the app. You can set this up to notify you of every single tweet or alert you to new mentions, direct messages or even followers.

Blaq Notification

Blaq Notification settings

Tapping on a tweet generates a popup on the right side of the screen. Now this popup contains a lot of detail; at the top will be the tweet as it appears in the timeline. Below this are five icons/options to choose from; mention/reply, retweet, mark as favourite, direct message and copy/translate tweet. Underneath the icons, you can find the profile of the user; complete with bio, followers and links. What’s cool is you can tap on some of these to see more detail – you can actually see who is following them.

Blaq Profile

You can also see a larger size profile picture by tapping on it. The same can be seen if the tweet contains an image. This is the part that I love; if a tweet contains a link, you have two different ways to view it. First, you can tap on the tweet itself and view the web page as a mini browser window in the previously mentioned popup. The page is fully functional; you can click on links, videos- you name it. I was able to check out BlackBerry FanBoy Video Contest finalist videos from within Blaq. The second way is to click on the link itself, not the tweet. This will redirect you to the native browser. I preferred to use the mini browser, as I can still check out tweets as I go. Oh speaking of which, when you generate a Tweet popup window, your timeline is paused so you don’t miss anything.

Blaq in app browsing

The hidden menu above contains the settings. It’s here that you can manage options like notifications, accounts and font type/size.

Blaq is more than impressive; it’s an absolute necessity if you want to access Twitter on your BlackBerry PlayBook. It has the largest set of features I have seen in an app in a long time. From the mini browser to notifications, this app has it covered. Rather than relying on providing information using multiple windows/applications, everything is practically contained in a beautiful package. If you want to give Blaq a spin, you can grab it for $1.99 from BlackBerry App World.

BlackBerry Super Fanboy Contest Finalists Roundup!

Super Fanboy Contest

OK CrackBerry Nation, over the last two days we've posted our FIVE Finalist Videos in CrackBerry's BlackBerry Super Fanboy contest. The videos have been AWESOME and you can find all of them below. If you haven't watched them yet, I suggest taking 20 minutes to watch them all now. You won't be disappointed.

It was hard deciding upon five finalists from all the entries submitted (you can see them all on our youtube channel) to begin with, and now things are going to get EVEN more difficult as our judging panel deliberates on who the grand prize winner will be. For your chance to influence the judges on who you want to see win, be sure to watch all the videos and respond in the comments with your rank order favorites and reasoning. We plan to announce the winner tomorrow (Friday) here on the blogs, so hurry and get watching!

Huge props go again to everybody who participated. And to those who didn't make the final round, watch your email as we'll be following up with a nice consolation prize. And to the five finalists... I hope you get some sleep tonight... tomorrow is a big day! Good luck!

Our first finalist video in CrackBerry's BlackBerry Super Fanboy contest comes via Marco van Hylckama Vlieg, who put together an AWESOME BlackBerry rap video. I don't want to give too much away in the teaser here, so hit play on the video above and take it all in. It's totally hardcore BlackBerry Super Fanboy. Which also means I'll slap on a little warning for explicit lyrics. :)

Our second finalist in CrackBerry's BlackBerry Super Fanboy contest comes to us via CrackBerry member Deathcommand. Deathcommand is well known on the CrackBerry forums, having racked up almost 4,000 forum posts to date (win or lose, he's a BB super fan in my book!).

Following the first and second of our top five CrackBerry Super Fanboy contest finalist videos (which we're posting in no particular order), our third finalist video comes from Julien who lives in Los Angeles. A BlackBerry user for over seven years, Julien says he takes his BlackBerry with him just about everywhere he goes.

Ok, so we're one, two, three finalist videos down in our BlackBerry Super Fanboy contest and it's time for our fourth to get unveiled here on the CrackBerry blogs. This video comes to us via Alexander Perri of Toronto, Canada and he's called it BlackBerry, My Everlasting Light (aptly name for the Black Keys song which the video is set to).

YouMail Visual Voicemail Plus updated to version 2.5.17 - 5 copies to be won!

In June, YouMail Inc. updated their popular Visual Voicemail Plus app to include several great improvements such as One-Touch Community Greetings & Number Search available In-App. Now YouMail Inc. has once again updated their app to version 2.5.17 with even more improvements making your voicemail messages truly visual.

The Visual Voicemail Plus service now features a new and comprehensive Visual Caller ID component that makies it closer to a true call management system for your BlackBerry device. Visual Caller ID visually identifies both missed callers and callers who have left messages with a name, a photo and city/state information, even when the number calling is not in the user’s address book.  This allows you to scan & listen to your voicemail messages in any order you choose. When you add this new addition to the other great features like custom contact greetings (love having one for my kids that says "if you're calling to ask for money, you may as well hang up"), checking messages via your pc, calling voicemail # orvia their  app as well as the option to share messages via email (comes in handy when trying to schedule an appointment for mulitple people), blogs and social network sites, that are already available for free, it pretty much makes other number and voicemail services redundant.

YouMail also offers Premium Services that include everything Visual Voicemail Plus offers as well as larger inbox storage (5,000+ messages), extended recordings (up to 5 min messages & 2 min greetings) and 20+ transcribed messages (message length transcribed varies per service level) based on the level you select starting at $4.99 a month.

This app has come in handy for me since switching from my BlackBerry 9670, which had Visual Voicemail included, to the 9930 which doesn't. I love being able to open the application, see who has called (and I mean literally see since there is a picture included) and left a message versus who has just called and hung up. I can easily pick the messages I want to listen to first instead of skipping through the numerous telemarkters & calls from my mother.

Contest: We have 5 annual basic transcription packages to be won. That's a savings of $8.99/month! All you have to do is leave a comment on this post to be entered. Contest ends this Sunday at midnight PST.

BlackBerry Smartphone Models and their Codenames in One Chart (FAQ)

Circle of BlackBerry bridgePair

I cannot count the times that I have been asked for a chart of the different BlackBerry models and the codenames associated with them. I finally got some free time on the train earlier this week and started compiling a list of the codenames I remembered off the top of my head. They should all be right but I am counting on all of you to keep me honest. There are also new unannounced models like the upcoming Curve “All Touch” Malibu (CDMA) and others that are not 100% confirmed yet but let us know in the comments if we missed any. I am also blanking on the codename for the original BlackBerry Bold 9900…

Mike Lazaridis & Jim Balsillie Statement on Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs

The whole world seems a bit shook up today and condolences for Steve Jobs have been flowing in from every corner. RIM’s co-CEO’s Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie also had a statement on Steve Jobs passing. Here is what they said via CityTV/WSJ:

"Steve Jobs was a great visionary and a respected competitor," Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, co-CEOs of rival Research in Motion (TSX:RIM), said in a statement. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family and to all of the employees of Apple.”

There are quite a few interesting stories being shared about Steve Jobs. I recommend checking out Techmeme today for most of the stories.

BlackBerry App World Hits 45,000+ Apps, Games, & Themes

BBM BlackBerry Cupcakes

Alex pointed out to us earlier this week that App World now has 45,000+ items available. That is a nice ramp up though I am sure they would want to hit 50,000+ for DevCon but that is probably not going to happen. The break down between the three categories for Apps, Themes, & Games works like this:

Something tells me the Android Player for the PlayBook is going to change those numbers drastically. On the other hand I don’t like reading too much into the numbers. Like the many other app stores, App World suffers from spam apps that really don’t belong together with apps or are duplicates of the same app. For example, 12,223 of items in the “Apps” category are in the Reference & eBooks section which translates into 10,659 eBooks in an App Store. In other words there are more than twice as many eBooks than games… I saw one eBook dev split up a book into three parts just to make it three apps…

Either way congrats to the App World team on hitting some more tonnage. Now we just need to boil down those apps to actually useful apps and forget the numbers…

BlackBerry Torch 9850 & 9860 Commercial Posted by RIM

Torch commercial

RIM has put up a commercial for their new BlackBerry Torch 9850 & 9860 this week. The commercial shows off some of the features of the device as RIM’s redeeming all touch BlackBerry. Hopefully the QNX touch BlackBerrys really help RIM take off in the space. I am kind of digging the fact that RIM is finally showing off the features of the phone in commercials instead of more esoteric stuff. Check out the video below:

Fixmo Tools v2.5 Released! Free Update for Current v2.0 Users

Fixmo Tools

Fixmo let us know that they have launched Fixmo Tools v2.5 which is a nice new enhancement to the previous Fixmo Tools v2.0. The nice part is that it is a totally free update for owners of Fixmo Tools v2.0! This new version brings along some serious updates including support for BlackBerry 7 and the ability to remove any of the 18 subapps that you don’t need.

My favorite feature is a new app to conserve Wi-Fi. I have been using it stand alone for months and I LOVE IT! There are other tools that turn your Wi-Fi on and off based on the cellphone tower you are connected to but Fixmo managed to get simplicity down. It simply works…

Features of Fixmo Tools v2.5 include:

You can pick up Fixmo Tools v2.5 in App World now for $7.99 and hopefully in the store for those of you who purchased it from there once they get the update live.

BlackBerry PlayBook OS v1.07.3312 Fixes Adobe Flash Vulnerability

tabletOS_bg2

RIM has pushed out an update to the BlackBerry PlayBook OS bringing it to OS v1.07.3312. This version is now available and addresses a vulnerability that Adobe announced in Flash on September 21st that could potentially cause issues for devices that support Flash though no exploits are currently documented. Users running OS v1.0.7.2942 will get an update that will only include this Adobe Flash update and should take only a few minutes to install. This is because of the piecemeal updates RIM allowed for in the last update which should make subsequent updates much easier.

So what are you waiting for? Hit that “check for updates” button now!

QNX Connected BMW X5 Shows Up at Auto Summit Japan

BMW x5 QNX

Since RIM acquired QNX they have been showing off cars powered or connected with QNX. Originally they were showing a 2009 Corvette and then they added a BMW roadster. Now Alex Kinsella posted some pictures of a QNX connected BMW X5 which looks pretty slick. I am really curious to see where RIM and QNX are going with these QNX powered cars and any tie in with BlackBerry devices in the real world. BMW cars have usually been dominated with iPod and iOS support but who knows maybe QNX will be powering them in the future…

BMW x5 QNX 2 BMW x5 QNX 3

Who knows RIM does have a trademark on BlackBerry Drive. Maybe we could have a BlackBerry BBX Drive!

FunOrama by novemberagain – a cool panoramic Windows Phone 7 style theme

If you're on the lookout for a unique and quirky theme or are a fan of the Windows 7 phone style platform then look no further than FunOrama by novemberagain. I've been rocking this theme on my Torch 9800 and I must say it's definitely one to check out. FunOrama is a panoramic theme made of up three sliding panes and designated spaces or boxes for your apps which gives it an engrossing sliding effect as you scroll across each one. There are three theme settings to choose from to completely change the look and colors of the icon boxes: default (block colors), transparent (clear), and custom theme (use the panoramic wallpaper to fill in the spaces).

Cool thing is you can design your own panoramic wallpaper, name it bigwall.png and save it on your external SD Card in BlackBerry/pictures. For those of you Photoshop gurus out there, create your own panoramic background with individual cutouts so that each image is represented in a different box. This makes for a really amazing look as shown above. Otherwise, using your own wallpapers distributes the image across the boxes.

Features

FunOrama is a slick theme that will certainly turn heads or make people wonder how you did that. Just be sure to do a battery pull after installation. It's available for BlackBerry 8520/30, 8900, 9300/30, 9630/50, 97XX, and 9800. You can grab this theme for $5.99 from BlackBerry App World or the CrackBerry store.

BIS 4.1 Update Goes Live in Europe – Adds BlackBerry 7 Functionality

bisSetup

RIM more or less let the BlackBerry Internet Service v4.1 features out of the bag awhile ago but we have been waiting for the update to go live. It was supposed to go live in Asia Pacific on Sept 10th, Europe on Sept 23rd, and North America on October 11th but that did not happen for Europe. Now CrackBerry has heard from users in Europe that BIS v4.1 is live there. It went live in Asia Pacific in September but we still don’t know if the October 11th date is set for North America.

Either way here is a reminder of the mostly BlackBerry OS 7 specific features that RIM has confirmed for BIS 4.1:

New Features of BlackBerry Internet Service 4.1

The BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) is designed to provide BlackBerry smartphone users with access to email messaging, instant messaging, Internet browsing, and more. BlackBerry Internet Service subscribers can receive automatic delivery of email messages from up to ten email accounts on their BlackBerry smartphones.
The following is a list of new features being introduced with BlackBerry Internet Service 4.1:
Improved large email and native attachment support

Subscribers using BlackBerry smartphones with BlackBerry® 7 installed can:

No interruption to email flow on SIM swap

Subscribers who insert a new SIM card in to their BlackBerry smartphone, including SIM cards from a different wireless service provider, no longer experience email flow interruptions. The BlackBerry Internet Service only stops sending email to a smartphone when the subscriber deletes all data from the smartphone, not when a new SIM card is inserted in to the smartphone.

Due to this change, before selling a smartphone, subscribers must delete all data from the smartphone (security wipe) to protect personal information, including email messages and synchronized contacts and calendar events. For more information on performing a security wipe, please see KB28225.

Note: This functionality will be available when BlackBerry Internet Service 4.1 is released in all regions.

Inbox priming for new account integrations

When a subscriber adds an email address to a smartphone, the inbox on the subscriber’s smartphone is pre-populated with up to 20 existing email messages from the email account.

Additional language support

Latvian and Lithuanian are supported by the BlackBerry Internet Service. Emails received in these languages can now be viewed on BlackBerry smartphones.

BlackBerry Leather Pocket Pouch for the BlackBerry Bold 9930 / 9900 Review

Depending where you live and what carrier you're on, the case that ships with your Bold 9900/9930 varies. For example, on Rogers in Canada my Bold 9900 came with the BlackBerry Leather Holster. But what I would have preferred is the BlackBerry Leather Pocket Pouch. Over the pond, pouches are inluded with the phones from alot of carriers, though the design of those is a little differen than the pocket pouch I take a look at in this review.

The leather pocket pouch protects your Bold when the device is inserted. It's a carrying pouch. Once it's out of the pouch, the phone is naked. Some of you are fine with that -- I know I typically prefer the feel of a naked phone -- while some of you will prefer an always-on case. And if that's your taste, I suggest checking out the hard shell and soft shell cases for the 9900/9930.

The BlackBerry Bold 9930/9900 Leather Pocket Pouch case has a list price of $34.99, but you can get it for less at ShopCrackBerry.com. With such high demand for Bold 9930/9900 cases it's been hard to keep inventory in stock, but we finally got caught up on our backorders for this one and have more available now. Keep reading for a video, more photos and details surrounding this tasteful yet luxurious case.

Overall I'm really happy with the design and quality of all the new BlackBerry brand cases for the Bold 9930 and Bold 9900, and the Pocket Pouch is no exception. It's simple, but I think it looks nice. There is a nice to texture to the case, and the stitching seems like it should hold up to a decent amount of abuse. The Bold fits well within the case. Snug, but not too snug.

As it is an official BlackBerry case, there is a built-in sleeper magnet which triggers the phone into standby mode when placed into the pouch (helping to save battery and prevent any sort of accidental dialing). The magnet also enacts "in holster" profile settings on the phone, which is a great feature to have and take advantage of. It's a simple case, but you can tell a lot of design effort went into this case to make it both simple yet functional. If you're looking for a leather pocket pouch for your new Bold, this one should more than do the trick.

Steve Jobs Passes On…

Steve Jobs

The news came in earlier today while I was out eating dinner with a friend and at first I thought it was another Twitter hoax. Sadly we lost a visionary tech leader today who inspired many of the innovations we take for granted today. While there is obviously an “Us & Them” dichotomy between many of us and Steve Jobs we  show our respect for a man who truly believed in living life with perfection as a goal.

BlackBerry Fanboy Video Contest Finalist #4: BlackBerry, My Everlasting Light

Ok, so we're one, two, three finalist videos down in our BlackBerry Super Fanboy contest and it's time for our fourth to get unveiled here on the CrackBerry blogs. This video comes to us via Alexander Perri of Toronto, Canada and he's called it BlackBerry, My Everlasting Light (aptly name for the Black Keys song which the video is set to).

As you can read in the full video details provided below, Alexander was trying to come up with crazy ideas to show off how much he loved BlackBerry, but decided that just didn't make sense and instead went for an approach that was literally all him. The video above walks through a day in Alexander's life, which is definitely a day in the life of a BlackBerry addict. I think a lot of the hardcore CrackBerry readers will see a bit of themselves staring back in this one. It's a well put together video. Definitely a BlackBerry Fanboy, that's for sure. Great stuff!

The video was filmed in Toronto, ON at my house as well as my girlfriend's house. I am the only person in the video and I operated the camera for most of the shots (my girlfriend Tania helped with a couple of scenes). It was filmed on my Nikon D7000 DSLR with a wide angle 24mm for the more zoomed out shots and with a 50mm for the close ups. It was filmed and exported in 1080p. When thinking of ideas to include in my video, I was trying to think of the craziest thing possible. After going through some ideas, I realized they just didn't make sense. After a long while of thinking, I realized I'm not going to try to fabricate some crazy video, but use my daily life as inspiration. I realized I use my BlackBerry a lot. Actually, between my phone and my PlayBook, I'm using it all day long. I feel a sense of panic if I don't have my BlackBerry in my pocket, on the table in front of me or by my side. I am constantly holding my BlackBerry, always checking emails or my social feeds. I am downright addicted to my BlackBerry. This made me come to the conclusion that I was going to film what a typical day in the life of a BlackBerry addict is like.

I am a photographer, graphic designer and as of last year, I'm a BlackBerry application developer (I have developed 3 apps for the PlayBook under AP Photography and 1 more is in the finalization stage), but in my free time I find myself either checking out CrackBerry, development tutorials and news or playing around in Flash Builder to find new and better features to add to my current projects. Because of this, I focused on me being a developer in the video, and what my day is like when I'm developing apps. I literally use my BlackBerry for everything. I use it as my alarm, to get the news and weather, to play games while I'm bored (yes, even in the bathroom), to check and send emails, make phone calls, watch videos and play music, as my e-reader, and so much more. I was only able to capture a few of the many uses I have for my BlackBerry because I didn't want the video to drag on. Basically, I use them for everything and I always have them on me (much to the disapproval of my mom and girlfriend). I also always have to have the latest and greatest BlackBerry. As you can see in the video, I have a BlackBerry Torch box, PlayBook box and Bold 9900 box on my desk. I bought an unlocked Torch 2 weeks before it was released in Canada, I got my PlayBook from RIM for developing an application (I would've bought one on day one if I hadn't) and I got the Bold 9900 on day one for app testing, but obviously use it as my everyday phone. I simply love BlackBerry!
