Need a new do? Try VirtualHair for BlackBerry smartphones!

VirtualHair

Some people are just born with an amazing head of hair. There are those have a great natural colour and others that will never know the horror of a receding hairline. I talk of the ones that have picture perfect hair; the ones who must have an army of stylists consistently making sure every single strand is in the right place. I’m sure you know someone whose locks look like a helmet and must be placed on their head like Darth Vader’s helmet. Others are not so lucky and have yet to find the perfect style.

Toysoft Development Inc came up with an entertaining (and funny) way to see which style is best for you through their app called VirtualHair for BlackBerry smartphones. All you need is a headshot of yourself (preferably from head on) in order to do some hair shopping. Browse through over 30 different hairstyles for both women and men. VirtualHair also lets you change the size and colour of the hair until you find a suitable match. When you are finished, you add a frame (optional), then save it, email it or update your BBM avatar.

Features

If anything else, it’s great for a laugh. Though I think my new best friend in the image above might like my new style, what do you think? You can pick up VirtualHair for $0.99 from BlackBerry App World.

Deal of the Day: Save on two great cases for your BlackBerry Playbook today only!

Are you getting the best deal on your mobile phone contract?

Mobile Phone contract

Most BlackBerry smartphone owners get theirs on a contract. We established this in a recent poll where most CrackBerry readers said they were locked in a contract. For most of my mobile phone life I have been on a contract. There have been occasions where I have gotten bored with the phone I got with my contract and buy one off contract half way through but that was before my BlackBerry days. That was also before UK networks got rid of 12 month contracts. Nowadays, we see 24 month contracts or 18 month ones in the UK and although some UK networks have brought back 12 month contracts, it's only available to existing customers and you pay a whole lot more upfront than on an 18 or 24 month contract.

You may have noticed from my UK Buyer's guide Part 1 that we love our ‘free' contracts, where we pay nothing upfront for the device. It is what most people go for when getting a contract and networks willfully oblige, as it means you pay higher per month but by doing this are you really getting the best deal? Is better to take a lower tariff and pay upfront? Or even get the device sim free (off-contract) from an authorised reseller or pay as you go?

Let's take a closer look at the cost of these contracts we're signing up to. We'll use the BlackBerry Bold 9900 as an example since all UK networks now have this BlackBerry device available. Sim free devices or pay as you go devices can be a bargain. It is certainly popular here in the UK as you can get decent, entry level handsets on a budget but high-end smartphones tend to be a little more expensive. In the UK there are a couple of websites that sell mobile phones sim free - www.expansys.com and www.clove.co.uk. Some networks will have higher end smartphones available on pay as you go while others don't. The BlackBerry Bold 9900 is available on pay as you go from O2 and Three. Let's take a look at the price breakdown.

Looking at the list above the cheapest deal would be with Three UK at a total of £459.99 (including £10 top-up). Now, let's take a look at the overall cost of your 18 or 24 month contract. The lowest monthly payment on a 24 month contract is from O2 at £16.50 per month, with an upfront payment of £199.99 for the device. The cost overall in 24 months is £595.99, already £150 more than Three's pay as you go deal. T-Mobile offers one of the most expensive monthly tariffs at £61.27, although there probably won't be many opting to choose this tariff the overall cost would £1470.48, three times more than pay as you go deals. Let's be a little more realistic and look at what most people go for. Most folks, myself included would go for the plan that would give me the phone ‘free' on average this ranges from £30 to £40 a month depending on what network you go for. Vodafone offers the Bold 9900 for free from £36 a month so over 24 months the cost to you is £864. Anyone one of the pay as you go deals looks a lot better than that amount. Is an 18-month contract any better? Well, you pay £5 more a month but it is also 6 months less in length, so looking at the same plans as we already have O2's cheapest would become £21.50 + £199.99, totalling £586.99. This plan already cheaper than going for a 24-month contract. Vodafone's plan would be £41 a month with a free device with a grand total of £738. Again, much cheaper than its 24-month equivalent.

So, by taking a look at those values, it seems going sim free/off-contract is more cost effective than going for a contract deal. Granted some may not be able to afford spending all that money in one go but over the long run you certainly save more. If you must go on a contract plan, perhaps consider going for a lower monthly payment and pay something upfront as it still works out cheaper than taking the 'free' device option. Have you had a look at your monthly contract lately? Will you start to think about paying a little more upfront? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Looking to get yourself a new BlackBerry Curve? Well Three UK has added the Curve 9360 to their BlackBerry collection and is available on 24-month contracts and pay as you go. The slimline Curve is the latest addition to the Curve family and runs BlackBerry 7.

Monthly plans start at £25 a month and you can get it on pay as you go for £229.99. Incidentally, Three UK have stopped selling the popular Curve 8520, now that the new Curve is available.

RIM Starts Rolling Out BBM v6.0.1 Which Helps Find & Share BBM Connected Apps

BBM 6 Rollout

RIM has announced that they are starting to roll out BBM v6.0.1 today which is a slight upgrade to the official current version 6.0.0.129. This new version has been in the beta zone before since the beginning of last month and includes some small tweaks. It mainly adds a new automated way to search for BBM connected apps in App World along with making it easier to share.

The key changes include:

  • Explore BBM-connected Apps – BBM users will now be able to pull up “Explore BBM-connected Apps” from a menu in the BBM Contacts screen. This action is designed to automate a BlackBerry App World storefront search for “BBM” by redirecting users to a list of up to 25 of the most popular BBM-connected apps available.
  • Sharing App content with your BBM Contacts is easier – Many BBM users have told us that they love sharing app content with their BBM friends who use the same app, but they also wanted to share content with their BBM friends who don’t have the app. BBM v6.0.1 is designed so that you can now share app-specific content with your BBM contacts regardless of whether your contact has the app installed.

For example, foursquare users may want to share a tip or badge they’ve recently earned, or Huffington Post users may want to share a breaking news story with their BBM contacts. Your friends or contacts will also be prompted to download the BBM-connected app if they don’t have it installed.

  • Include BBM v5.0 users in application invites – Now you can include even more friends in the fun! You can now invite BBM v5.0 & BBM v6.0 contacts to join in the fun and share BBM-connected app experiences. Your BBM v5.0 contacts will be prompted to download BBM v6.0 in order to access BBM-connected apps. For users new to BBM v6.0 and BBM-connected apps, here’s a quick rundown of some benefits to upgrading (make sure to read our BBM 6: Apps Made Social blog post for more information).
    • Inviting BBM friends to experience your favorite apps
    • Chatting with BBM contacts from inside BBM-connected apps
    • Discovering apps and updates through friends by browsing their recent profile updates of their contacts profile

Sharing App content with your BBM Contacts is easier – Many BBM users have told us that they love sharing app content with their BBM friends who use the same app, but they also wanted to share content with their BBM friends who don’t have the app. BBM v6.0.1 is designed so that you can now share app-specific content with your BBM contacts regardless of whether your contact has the app installed.

Deal of the Day: Save 48% on the BodyGuardz Protective Skin for BlackBerry Bold 9930 and Bold 9900

Fixmo Tools adds yet even more functionality - 10 copies up for grabs!

Fixmo Tools 2.5

Oh Fixmo Tools, do I ever get tired of talking about you? No, I don’t. It’s part of a small number of applications that has traversed the journey from smartphone to smartphone with me. I review a lot of applications (and by a lot I mean a WHOLE WHACK), and Fixmo Tools is one of the reviewed few that I hold onto. Why do I hold onto it? Inside is a suite of applications (an arsenal you could say), that extends upon the functionality of whatever model of BlackBerry smartphone I may be using. It has saved me time and again by reversing accidental message deletion, alerting me of potentially inappropriate outgoing emails and providing me handy screen capturing capabilities. These of course are but a few of the options Fixmo Tools comes with. If I had run into the team at BlackBerry DevCon 2011, I would have hugged them (and then probably would have shared in an awkward, silent moment afterward).

When I first received my BlackBerry Bold 9900, I discovered that, sadly, Fixmo Tools was not yet OS 7 compatible. I said “until we meet again” to a dear friend (well I didn’t actually say it, that would have been crazy). So recently, Fixmo Tools was updated to version 2.5 and with it came a couple of new features. Now compatible with OS 7, I couldn’t wait to see what else was new.

Fixmo Tools is now available for BlackBerry smartphones running OS 7 (yessss!). They compare Fixmo Tools to owning a utility belt; well they’re going to need suspenders to keep that belt up because it now comes loaded with 18 applications. You heard right, 18 frikkin apps! So on top of the support for BlackBerry OS 7 devices, and performance optimizations, Fixmo Tools does come with a couple of cool additions:

Conserve Wi-Fi

It can be argued that properly managing Wi-Fi connectivity helps to conserve battery life. In the list of Fixmo Tools applications, you will see the Conserve Wi-Fi icon. Using this app, your Wi-Fi will be turned on and off at a specific location, based upon information from cell towers. For example- I’m at work and connect to WiFi. I click on the icon and the next screen will display the available networks and the associated Cell ID. A simple button will allow the application to automatically activate or deactivate WiFi connectivity the next time I’m there. No more manually activating WiFi!

Fixmo Tools Conserve WiFi

Application Deletion

If you ask me, having 18 apps in 1 is kind of a crazy deal. Some people may not think the same way. The folks at Fixmo said that they actually received feedback that there were too many applications to choose from. I guess I can see where there may be a problem; not everyone may use the Speed Test, or Remote Print applications. What Fixmo Inc did, was include an option in the menu that allows you to delete the apps you don’t need. All you need to do is open the menu and select Delete Apps. A pop-up will list the currently installed applications, along with a check box beside each entry. Click on each entry that you want to delete and they disappear. See? Fixmo can add more functionality, even when enabling you to remove functionality. Funny how that works, isn’t it?

Fixmo Tools delete

If you would like to pick up Fixmo Tools, it's currently on sale for $7.99 (from $14.99) at the CrackBerry App Store.

Contest: We have 10 copies of Fixmo Tools to giveaway! All you have to do is leave a comment to be entered. Contest ends this Sunday at midnight PST.

Developer Shows Off PlayTorrent Beta BitTorrent Client for the PlayBook

 PlayBook PlayTorrent

Now this is another one of those apps where you wonder if RIM will allow it into App World. PlayTorrent is an on device BitTorrent client for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Cool right? While BitTorrent has many justifiable uses most companies tend to permanently associate it with illegal file sharing. Shahriyar over @BBin.in spotted a video of the PlayTorrent client in action from Behance Network along with a load of screenshots here.

Desktop Video Link | Mobile Video Link

Supposedly Behance Network plans on releasing PlayTorrent shortly after it gets out of beta. I am really curious to see if RIM allows it in App World. The only other BitTorrent related app I have seen in App World is a free NASi app that lets you remotely control the Torrent app on your home QNAP network attached storage (NAS).

Reckless Racing for the BlackBerry PlayBook

I was super happy when I saw that Reckless Racing had finally arrived on the BlackBerry PlayBook. I've had the game on other devices in the past, and it has long been one of my favorite time killers. This overhead racer pits you against oppenents on various courses, speeding your way through mud, dirt and pavement on your way to victory. There is also a Delivery mode where you can test your skills against the clock as you race to deliver packages. Reckless Racing is loads of fun and is that perfect "few minutes of time killing" game when you're on the go. With loads of replay value, you'll find yourself addicted in no time. Check out the video above for my full review.

Reuters Suddenly Realizes RIM SVP, Jim Tobin, Left RIM 2+ Months Ago…

Jim Tobin

You have to love wall streets obsession with RIM remodeling their management structure. First these analysts and investors were clamoring for a shakeup in management and cleaning up house. Now when they see RIM doing just that they complain that RIM is firing people. The latest one Reuters all of a sudden caught on to months later is Jim Tobin who used to be SVP of the Software, Services & Enterprise Markets business unit at RIM.

Last I checked he was let go a little over 2 months ago together with Jeff McDowell, who was SVP of platform marketing and alliances. They also let go Vincent Washington who was heading up RIM Sports, Tyler Lessard, Mike Kirkup, , etc along with thousands of others throughout RIM. Some of these employees that were forced out, laid off, quit dramatically, or found better opportunities were extremely talented people but RIM is in the middle of a drastic platform shift and many acquisitions which leads to redundancies… RIM bought a new enterprise platform Ubitexx which is set to replace and prop up BES. They acquired QNX which is RIM’s new development platform… These are key pieces that are currently sitting side by side with departments run by the old guard of RIM execs.

The thing I don’t get is why Wall Street doesn’t see the management change up as exactly what they asked for? I cannot read the minds of RIM’s upper management but this is something that they started way back in 2009 when they started considering QNX and a whole new platform. The similarities to what they did back when they expanded from enterprise to consumer and their acquisitions back then look awfully like what they are doing now.

What do you think? Many of these people will be sorely missed but this seems to be exactly what RIM needs now. You can catch up with Jim Tobin on Twitter or his blog that he started up again two months ago…

uTrack for the BlackBerry PlayBook is a unique project management application

uTrack

Have you checked out uTrack for the BlackBerry PlayBook yet? Those who seek a task/project management tool may find this application will stick with you. I say this because it offers an interestingly familiar way to manage projects and its corresponding details. Memo pads are used many different ways in an office (home offices as well); quick reminders, messages and office pranks (kick me) are just a few applications. Perhaps at your company you have a boardroom with a huge whiteboard that is littered with these, each representing a task for a much larger project. You move them around as you decide on which ones are more of a priority, or as items get processed. It’s a simple representation on project tracking and management that helps everyone see what needs to be done. The white board becomes the go to wall for what needs to be accomplished, until it meets its demise thanks to a careless member of the cleaning staff. uTrack lets you track the same thing, minus the paper cuts.

With your PlayBook in hand, open up uTrack application. A wallpaper resembling a lined notepad holds your current project. Tapping on it brings you to a wall filled with virtual post its; the wall is divided into four categories – To Do, In Progress, Verify and Done. Within each of these categories is where you will be posting your notes/tasks. At first glance, you will only see the subject of the task, but by tapping on a task, you can see any additional notes you may have entered. When viewing or creating a note, you can assign a colour which you can set any meaning to, such as urgency or type of task or who is the owner of that task.

uTrack Project List

uTrack task list

Moving the notes between categories, or up and down within the same category, is as simple as pressing and dragging. So as you review your work, this effortless management will require less attention, enabling you to focus on getting the work done. If you are within a wall you’ll also notice three buttons at the bottom, allowing you to clear all tasks off of a wall, change the name of the wall or delete the wall itself.

uTrack edit note

Now the lite (free) version of uTrack allows you to make use of only 1 virtual wall and manage up to 10 notes at a time. Recently, Tenpearls released a Pro version of uTrack, which brings you support for:

That is a lot of notes to manage! To be honest, I wouldn’t know what to do if I had to manage those in the real world. Oh, wait, yes I do; I’d file them in the trash bin. The notes only support text input, which is a bit unfortunate. I would like to be able to attach images or sketch/jot down quick visual ideas as well. Maybe that’s something to think about for a future update. Both versions of uTrack, Pro for $4.99 and uTrack Lite, can be picked up from BlackBerry App World.

Connect to TVersity App Promises DLNA / UPNP Streaming to Your PlayBook

 Connect to TVersity

FileArchiveHaven has released a TVersity client for the popular TVersity server that many people use. In case you don’t know TVersity is a free server to install on your PC that lets you stream video to devices like the Xbox, PS3, and now the PlayBook. TVersity is a DLNA compliant sharing server in other words and this new “Connect to TVersity” app lets you stream videos, audio, and pictures to your PlayBook. The crazy part is that this PlayBook app is not limited to use to TVersity and actually works with any standard web based DLNA server. The only benefit of TVersity server is that it pre-converts videos to make sure they are playable on the PlayBook due to compatible video types.

Sounds cool right? With Connect to TVersity and your TVersity server setup you can:

  • Stream Audio files
  • Stream Video Files
  • Stream Photos
  • UPNP / DLNA
  • Supports Subtitles

I have not had a chance to try out this app yet since I have not been home but I will definitely be checking it out. Send us screenshots to our tip line if you get it working! Let us know what you think of Connect to TVersity if you pick it up in App World for $1.99. They also confirm that they have tested it on PlayBook Beta OS 2.0 and it works!

PS: I have had limited success in the past getting the PlayBook to simply work with TVersity without a client by just going to http://<tversity ip address>:<port>/flashlib/ but hopefully this is better!

Crowdsourced PlayBook Android App List

Since the Android Player for the PlayBook leaked out and then officially came out in the public OS 2.0 beta users have been looking for which Android apps work on the PlayBook. There were quite a few lists being created and a few repositories of popular apps but now we seem to have something better. A group of hardworking enthusiasts over at CrackBerry forums created a public Google spreadsheet that lists all of the Android apps they have managed to get working on the BlackBerry PlayBook. It also includes links to download most of them so you can sideload them without having to convert and sign them yourself.

*** The credit goes out to quite a few people and I wish I could name all of them but since I don’t want to offend any of them I will just say you guys know who you are. Keep up the good work! ***

InPulse Smartwatch Gets BlackBerry 7 Support & More in Latest Firmware Beta

Plano-20110225-00014

Well the InPulse Bluetooth Smartwatch for BlackBerry just got another breath of life. The watch received a nice firmware update this week to bring a load of new features including OS 7 support. They have now tested it with the Bold 9900 and Torch 9810 so it should work. The release notes for this v3.9.4 firmware include:

  • Finally, working support for OS 7! Tested on BB 9900 and 9810. Our recommendation: Use your old OS5 or 6 Blackberry to load the latest firmware (3.9.4) onto your watch, then you can begin using inPulse with OS 7
  • Introducing the ability to download free watchapps right to your watch! Browse the inPulse app to see what is available
  • Be sure to update the firmware on your watch after downloading. Download Apps -> Default Notification App -> Load
  • If you happen to get your watch into a non-working state, you can always revert to factory firmware mode by holding the button down until the display says ‘loading…’

You can read more about the update or download it at www.getinpulse.com/beta/
