CrackBerry member builds custom vehicle mount for his PlayBook

CrackBerry member Dylan sent in some pictures of a project he just completed. He designed himself a custom PlayBook vehicle mount! Combining the snap-on shield from his PlayBook OtterBox and a car heater mount with a ball joint, he had a good starting point. A quick trip to the hardware store found him some L-shaped brackets to use as the mount. Says Dylan: "The rest was easy, just drill the holes and bolt them in. After it was mounted I hooked up my aux cable and had myself a custom screen in my truck."

It looks great, and goes to show what you can do with a little creativity and some spare parts. If do-it-yourself isn't your style, head on over to ShopCrackBerry and check out the car kits there. You can have a look at more pictures of Dylan's custom vehicle mount after the break, and if you've created something awesome you want to share with the CrackBerry community, don't hesitate to send it in!

RIM Explains BlackBerry PlayBook Work & Personal Info Security

BlackBerry Bridge

In the past we have mentioned a bit about what security measures RIM has put in place on the BlackBerry PlayBook but the documentation was a bit daunting. They have kindly summed much of it up into one comparably short knowledge base article. In short your work data over the Bridge is ultra secure with 512 bit encryption but your personal data is not. Hopefully that is fixed in the future but still this should be an easy sell for enterprises worried about jailbroken iPads and Android tablets.

Security of work and personal data on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet

Article ID: KB27707

Does the tablet store any work data persistently in the work file system?

No.

When a tablet is connected to a BlackBerry® smartphone using BlackBerry® Bridge™, the tablet temporarily stores work data in the work file system on the tablet. The work file system is encrypted using XTS-AES-256. The keys that the BlackBerry® PlayBook™ tablet uses to encrypt the work file system are encrypted using the BlackBerry Bridge work key. The tablet stores the BlackBerry Bridge work key in RAM only.

When the Bluetooth® connection between a tablet and a smartphone closes, the tablet and the smartphone each delete their copy of the BlackBerry Bridge work key. All of the work data that is stored on the tablet is encrypted with keys that are encrypted using the BlackBerry Bridge work key, and both copies of the work key are deleted. This data and key encryption means that it is not possible to decrypt the work data after the Bluetooth connection closes and the smartphone and tablet delete their copies of the BlackBerry Bridge work key.

What is XTS-AES?

XTS-AES is an IEEE-approved Advanced Encryption Standard mode for disk encryption that provides protection against manipulation of encrypted data. XTS-AES-256 uses 512-bit cryptographic keys.

Does the tablet encrypt personal data?

No.

Can I disable the feature that allows work applications to attach personal files to work email messages or calendar entries?

No.

Is the cryptographic module on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet FIPS validated?

The cryptographic module on the tablet is currently in the process of being validated for FIPS 140-2 certification.

Can I set a password on a tablet?

Yes. A user can configure the tablet password and timeout options using the Options menu on the tablet. If you set a password for the tablet, you must provide that password to log in to the tablet.

Is work data protected by the smartphone password?

Yes. After a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet user connects the tablet to a BlackBerry smartphone that requires a password, the tablet automatically requires the user to provide the smartphone password when the tablet accesses any smartphone data. Smartphone data can include email messages, calendar entries, tasks, memos, BlackBerry® Messenger messages, intranet content, files, or attachments that the user views on the tablet.

The requirement to provide the smartphone password to access work data is independent of the tablet password that a user may set.

Do the IT policy rules that control the password security level of a smartphone extend to a tablet?

Yes. If a user connects a tablet to a smartphone that is associated with a BlackBerry Enterprise Server, any IT policy rules that control the password security level of the smartphone apply to the smartphone password that the user must enter to access work data on the tablet.

What password security level is enforced if I connect a tablet to a smartphone with one set of IT policy rules, then disconnect and connect the tablet to a smartphone with a different set of IT policy rules?

While the tablet is connected to the first smartphone, the password security level that is set for that smartphone is enforced. This security level applies to the smartphone password that a user must enter to access work data on the tablet. It does not apply to the tablet access password that a user may set on the tablet.

When you connect the tablet to another smartphone, the tablet deletes the work file system that temporarily stored work data associated with the first smartphone. While the tablet is connected to the second smartphone, the password security level that is set for that smartphone is enforced. This security level applies to the smartphone password that a user must enter to access work data on the tablet. It does not apply to the password that a user may set on the tablet.

BlackBerry PlayBook Tablet OS Update v1.0.7 Coming Later Today?

BlackBerry Torch II Makes It’s Way to the FCC

9810_FCCJust recently we saw the BlackBerry 9900 make it’s way to the FCC website for approval and today the Torch II (9810) sketch shows up on the FCC website. According to the filings the Torch II only supports GSM 850 and 1900 bands, including WCDMA bands II and V. Earlier rumors pointed to a T-Mobile release also but that is still unsure since it may be a while before we see this device make it’s way to other carriers. The Torch up until now has been an AT&T exclusive, only time will tell if T-Mobile will get this one. They were also going to release the all touch Monaco but it seems T-Mobile scrapped that one within the last few months.

RIM Working on BlackBerry Cyclone TV Media Box for This Fall?

blackberry media box

I am not sure what to make of this rumor. We first heard about RIM working on some secretive TV media box at the end of June from N4BB (The mockup above is their imagining of the product). There weren’t many details then but the idea was intriguing. I thought of it as a souped up BlackBerry Presenter since we didn’t know much about features. It simply seemed like the PlayBook with its HDMI connection would do all a presenter could do and more for your TV.

Now we are hearing more rumors along that same vein from NerdBerry with sources telling them that RIM is working on this “BlackBerry Media Box.” According to that source the box is codenamed the BlackBerry Cyclone and has the following features:

It is supposedly scheduled for this fall but I would rather RIM be working on QNX superphones. Still the idea is intriguing especially considering some of what RIM was showing off at BlackBerry World concerning the PlayBook connected home concept.

Rumor: Microsoft Office Suite Coming to the PlayBook?

BlackBerry PlayBook Microsoft Office

Now this is a rumor out of left field but I just felt it was interesting enough to mention to start a conversation. As far as I know the BlackBerry PlayBook is the only current tablet on the market that comes with a free office compatible program (Documents to Go). This latest rumor told to N4BB by one of their sources has RIM bringing the Microsoft Office Suite to the BlackBerry PlayBook. The rumor was not sure if it will be the Microsoft Office 365 online apps or simply real apps and everything else seems to be up in the air too.

The question is how this would benefit RIM. Considering how tightly RIM integrates with Microsoft Exchange it might make sense as a quick email solution upgrade for the BlackBerry PlayBook and future BlackBerry devices but then it would not be an exclusively “BlackBerry” email experience. Especially since Microsoft has clearly stated that they think the tablet experience is the full Windows experience unlike their Windows Phone product. Also worth considering is if Microsoft would create apps in their rival Adobe Flash, WebWorks, or the native SDK. On the other hand RIM announced a pretty tight partnership with Microsoft at BlackBerry World with RIM preloading their software and integrating Bing directly into the device.

What do you think?

RIM Hints to PlayBook Update in Latest Website Images

Playbook Update Video Chat

RIM slips up every once in awhile with their website images. BBin.in noticed exactly such a slipup on RIM’s website this week with the BlackBerry PlayBook images showing off updates that we have not yet seen on the device. First of all they spotted what looks like Headset support or possibly even Bluetooth headset support for the PlayBook which I have been waiting for. It is shown off in the bottom of the video chat screenshot above.

 Playbook Update BBM Chat

On top of that they also noticed that the fonts in the BBM Bridge have been updated. They have also added some nice touches like showing the delivery and recieve status time you can see from BBM on your phone.

Facebook PlayBook Update

The Facebook app also looks a bit revamped. Check them out at us.blackberry.com and let us know if you spot anything else. Who knows this update may even drop today like we previously heard.

Rumor: RIM Working on BBM Social Platform Music App

BBM Music App

I am really hoping RIM blows things out of the park with the BBM social platform and their 1st party apps and helps developers do the same. In that vein BBSync heard from one of their sources that RIM is working on a BBM Social Platform Music app that will make use of that API called BBM Music. I think that is a brilliant move especially after their moves into Amazon MP3 store and BlackBerry Radio.

The app is supposed to be a stand alone app but tie in to BBM nice and tight. What do you think of such an app? I know quite a few people who already use BBM to share what music they are listening to. I am hoping the BBM Social Platform allows devs like Slacker and Pandora to do the same.

HP7 Part 2 by Walker Themes - It all ends here!

Harry Potter is one of the most popular series of books and movies to date with a huge fan base. This week the last movie comes out in theaters, and it's been anticipated for a long time. What better way to show your love for this magical series than with an amazing theme for your BlackBerry?

Walker Themes has just unleashed his latest, HP7 Part 2, for all of you to enjoy. As with all of his themes, this is packed with a lot of special details you are going to love. The home screen is truly magical, with red and blue bolts shooting from either side of your screen when you scroll, meeting in the middle at the HP7 logo, to be struck by lightening. When you click the animation, the bottom dock and weather slot appear. The dock contains 4-6 icons, depending on your device. Custom made battery and signal meters are a fantastic touch, with stars representing signal and Harry Potter's name in the lower right the battery. As battery level drops, Harry's name turns from blue to white! The font is a perfect match as are the gray stone icons.

Whether you are a huge Harry Potter fan or not, this is a really well done theme with tons of creativity. The animation is smooth and doesn't cause lag whatsoever. It looks so awesome on your device, you'll want to show it off to all the other HP fans when you're waiting in line at the theater. How Do You Use Your BlackBerry: Which streaming music service do you use on your device?

With all the streaming music apps out there, it's sometimes hard to pick just one. Everyone has their favorite for various reasons, but for the most part all of the services offer pretty much the same features. Some users choose what works best for them on their BlackBerry alone, while others love the cross-platform nature of an app. When all is said and done it's a "to each his own" kind of choice. We're curious to know which streaming music app is the most popular with BlackBerry users. Let us know in the poll above, then leave a comment letting us know why you use the app you picked.

PlayBook IM+ App Held “Under Review” By RIM for 2 Months

IMPlus under review

I am not sure what to make of this one. When Luis first told me about it earlier today I did a double take. I know that Amail was “under review” perpetually but that app was at least a clear violation of the SDK license that says you cannot create an email app. Sad but at least understandable. Things get a lot weirder when it comes to long time BlackBerry developer Shape Services. We found out back in mid April that IM+ multi network instant messaging client was coming to the PlayBook and even had an approximate price point at $19.95 along with a May scheduled release.

The thing is Shape submitted IM+ to RIM in App World back on May 19th. That is just shy of 2 months ago! I realize that it might take up to a week to get an app reviewed but 2 months without hearing back from RIM is ridiculous. When Luis pointed it out this morning I immediately reached out to RIM but I have not heard a word back. I was hoping they would simply say it was a mistake and the app would be available. No such luck.

This has prompted Shape to post about it on Google+ throwing their hands in the air. RIM literally cannot allow these key apps to fall through the cracks like this. Even if they are not going to approve it at least communicate with a long time BlackBerry dev. I have been hearing rumblings for awhile that RIM is working on streamlining the App World review house team but maybe they simply need to get off their lazy… I know I submitted two apps for other devs that took almost 2 weeks to get approved but at least that was back before the device launched. With IM+, an app that could really do well on the PlayBook, this is simply unacceptable.

This is why I am very against RIM’s new concept of keeping App World as the only way to get apps on the BlackBerry PlayBook without the user unfriendly sideloading process. THIS is one of many reasons why RIM should simply allow apps to install through the browser. Its one of the best features of BlackBerry phones that they have denied the PlayBook.

So RIM the ball is in your court. Even if we are only hearing one side of the story this shouldn’t even be an issue in the first place. RIM justifies using App World as the only platform for distributing PlayBook apps to help developers centralize. It wasn’t meant to hold developers hostage, stop them from beta testing, and make developing for the PlayBook a hassle…

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Devs: Win a BlackBerry Bold 9900 & a NYC Flight, Hotel, & $500 for the BBM Hackathon!

BerryReview Hackathon Mad Programmer

Since RIM reached out to us about the BBM Hackathon competition I was very intrigued. Working together with RIM we managed to sweeten the contest with our own BerryReview Wildcard contest entry to the RIM BBM Hackathon (www.bbmnyc.com) we told you about earlier today. While RIM is offering up 10 invites to the event we have our own prize. The developer who wins our BerryReview Hackathon contest will not only get a free trip to NYC (Flight & Hotel) to attend and compete in the Hackathon event from August 10th through 13th along with $500 spending money. Our winners will also get a free BlackBerry Bold 9900 (when available) courtesy of BerryReview!

Sounds too good to be true? Obviously there are rules but first lets cover how you enter OUR Hackathon contest. Since the winner must have the skills to compete in the RIM BBM Hackathon we decided to make our contest a test. To enter you simply have to create an original BlackBerry Smartphone Java or WebWorks app that makes our Judges laugh and offer it for free to all our users. The contest app must be funny but not crude or harmful and should hopefully not take a skilled developer very long to create. For example, you could create a prank app that pretends to put your phone through a washing machine cycle when it reboots (I got the idea from the first virus prank I ever saw). Or it could simply pull in other funny content like funny quotes. We will be judging the entries based on originality, BlackBerry development skill demonstrated, design, and most of all if it manages to make us laugh (or cry laughing). You can even win brownie points if throw in some BBM Social Platform features though that is not required.

Submissions to the BerryReview Hackathon can be made through the comments on this article or by emailing hackathon2011@berryreview.com. The BerryReview Hackathon contest apps must also follow the same restrictions as the BBM Hackathon contest including: No crude, illegal, hateful, offensive, disparaging, or other restrictions for entry apps which are set in the BBM Hackathon contest rules. To be eligible to win the BerryReview Hackathon you as the developer must both submit an app following the rules above and also:

If you win our BerryReview Hackathon contest you will receive a:

So what are you waiting for? Start developing and let us know in the comments or on the tip line if you have any ideas for developers or just want to bounce some ideas off the community. Also don’t wait for the last minute to enter! Somebody else might steal your idea…

Kudos to #TeamBlackBerry @ RIM for making this happen! You know who you are!

Developers: Enter the BBM Apps Hackathon!

Hackathon event

RIM let us know about the BBM Hackathon a few days ago and I really like the idea. RIM is opening up the door for multiple contestants to prove their skills at developing BlackBerry apps and bring their app to fruition during a 2 day hackathon in NYC. The contest is open to developers in the United States and District of Columbia (excluding Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico and Florida) and Canada (excluding Quebec).

RIM is giving away 10 chances for developers to be selected to enter the Hackathon on their website www.bbmnyc.com . We will also be giving away a chance to win and represent BerryReview but more details on that later. In a quick recap:

The eligibility criteria that developers need to meet to enter this contest include:

  • have an idea for a new BlackBerry® application that incorporates BBM
  • have the capability to build a BlackBerry smartphone app with their idea
  • have a laptop with all the software, accessories and equipment needed to build their app, including a laptop loaded with BlackBerry® Webworks™ or BlackBerry® Java®
  • be a resident of the United States, District of Columbia (excluding Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, and Florida) or Canada (excluding Quebec)
  • be able to travel to attend the BBM Apps Hackathon Event (“Event”), August 10-13, 2011, and be able to confirm such availability within 48 hours of potential winner notification from RIM
  • understand that the Event will be filmed and that by participating in the BBM Apps Hackathon Contest, consent to the filming of your developer story and the use of your image

xCloud - an iCloud solution for BlackBerry

xCloud

So Apple will be releasing their iCloud this fall. This iCloud will store your documents, media and pretty much your life in a cloud (as long as it fits into a space of 5GB) and will automatically push them to their iProducts or PC. Earlier in the year, a company called Funambol announced a Mobile-Me like service that provided two-way synchronization with Outlook as well as synced pictures between your BlackBerry and PC – or with various social networking sites. Check out the original post here.

Funambol has recently announced the release of their own version of iCloud, called xCloud. This digital locker is a cross-platform service allowing for synchronization over a numerous brands of smart phones and platforms. In other words, you can sync a BlackBerry with an Android tablet or an iPhone. So the x in xCloud represents the cross platform support. They’ve also vastly improved their synchronization services since their previous versions. xCloud is based on the recently introduced Funambol MediaHub cloud digital locker solution for manufacturers, VAS providers and mobile operators. REDWOOD CITY, Calif., July 7, 2011 – Funambol, the leader of smart cloud sync solutions, today launched its new Funambol xCloud digital locker as an iCloud-alternative for Android devices and BlackBerry mobile phones. Funambol xCloud wirelessly syncs rich media (e.g. pictures and videos), files and PIM data (e.g. contacts and calendar) between mobile phones, tablets, personal computers and MS Outlook via the cloud. It also allows rich media on Android devices and BlackBerry phones to be wirelessly shared with social networks and media sites such as Facebook, Picasa, Flickr and YouTube.

Unlike Apple iCloud that primarily works with Apple products, Funambol xCloud supports the broadest array of mobile device and data types. xCloud is based on the recently introduced Funambol MediaHub white-label ready solution for mobile operators, MSOs, MVNOs, VAS providers and device manufacturers that want to quickly provide a cloud digital locker. Funambol‘s new xcloud4Android and xcloud4BB are upgraded versions of its prior MobileMe-like services (named mm4android and mm4bb, respectively). The 'x' in 'Funambol xCloud' signifies that the Funambol digital locker is a cross-device and cross-platform service, which syncs data and media across multiple brands of devices. For example, Funambol xCloud supports syncing an Android phone with an iPad and PC, an iPhone with an Android tablet and Mac, or a BlackBerry phone with an iPad. Moreover, the new Funambol xCloud services sync more types of rich media, including videos and two-way picture sync, as well as files than its MobileMe-like predecessors.

"iCloud advances wireless cloud sync for Apple users, while Funambol xCloud provides it for everyone, whether they use Apple or not," said Amit Chawla, Funambol CEO. "Funambol xCloud is the leading iCloud-alternative digital locker for anyone who wants to wirelessly sync beyond the Apple silo."

Funambol xCloud4Android and xCloud4BB are immediately available. They provide users with 150M of free storage and offer premium plans for additional storage. Users can sign up for a free or premium account at www.xcloud4android.com and www.xcloud4bb.com.

Funambol is the leading provider of smart cloud sync solutions for mobile phones and connected devices, powered by open source. The commercial version of Funambol has been deployed by top mobile operators, device manufacturers, internet companies, service providers and ISVs. BlackBerry 6 Browser Search Bar Now Goes to Google Mobile Site!

BlackBerry Browser Google Search

Finally! Its amazing how the small things make such a big difference. Since RIM introduced the Google search bar in BlackBerry OS 5.0 (I think) it has always directed searches to the Google desktop site. For the last few days I have noticed it is finally going to the new Google Search page they just released for BlackBerry OS 6.0+ devices with WebKit browsers.

I cannot confirm if this is the case for those of you with devices earlier than OS 6.0 but if so let us know in the comments. Thanks Shaun for reminding me about the change. Both of us are not sure what finally changed and if it was on Google or RIM’s part. Either way I am MUCH happier now…

SHOWWX+ HDMI Expands Your PlayBook on to a 100” Screen (Projector)

SHOWWX _HDMI_BB_PlayBook_2_White_RGB SHOWWX _HDMI_BB_PlayBook_1_White_RGB

Since the BlackBerry PlayBook supports HDMI output without any special dongles it really opens up a world of opportunity. I didn’t even think of pocket sized Pico Projectors at first until MicroVision let us know that they are releasing their SHOWWX+ HDMI today. They are pitching this tiny projector as a perfect companion to the BlackBerry PlayBook pumping out a 30” to 100” screen depending on lighting

The SHOWWX+ HDMI projector should be available as of this article going live from microvision.com and Amazon.com at an MSRP of $369. Let us know if you pick one up or what other uses you have for the PlayBook HDMI capabilities. Full press release after the jump:

MicroVision Unveils SHOWWX+ HDMI for Mobile Big-Screen Sharing and Visual Collaboration

Expanded compatibility to growing device ecosystem and large, focus-free viewing experience unlock the potential of mobile devices for collaboration and entertainment

REDMOND, Wash. – July 14, 2011 — MicroVision, Inc. (NASDAQ:MVIS), the leader in innovative ultra-miniature laser display technology, today unveiled SHOWWX+™ HDMI™ as the newest addition to its family of award-winning, pocket-size laser pico projectors. With pure digital connectivity to a breadth of new tablets, smartphones and devices offering HDMI video-out, SHOWWX+ HDMI enables spontaneous content sharing and bigger visual collaboration outside of traditional meeting room settings.

SHOWWX+ HDMI is the perfect accessory for sharing content on the move thanks to its small size, plug-and-play connectivity and focus-free operation.  New quick start capabilities offer immediate startup, and given that advancements in the latest operating systems of devices like RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook and Apple’s iPad 2 enable true display mirroring—users can connect and project everything on their device screens at image sizes greater than 100 inches in a matter of seconds.

Though HDMI is a standard feature for most laptops and computers, it is a relatively new addition to smartphones and tablets. Adding HDMI connectivity to the SHOWWX line of projectors will extend the family of host devices compatible with MicroVision’s display—delivering a larger, more vivid, focus-free viewing experience to an extended range of mobile devices once the HDMI standard is broadly adopted.

“We are giving road warriors the ability to share digital content in a compelling manner, from the palms of their hands,” said Alexander Tokman, president and CEO of MicroVision. “Extending our connectivity expands our device ecosystem.  Now even more mobile device users can break free from huddling around their palm or pad-sized screens to enjoy a bigger and more immersive viewing experience anywhere, at work or play.”

Visual Collaboration and Entertainment on the Go

Unlike competing products, SHOWWX+ HDMI easily transforms from an on-the-go business collaboration tool to a big screen entertainment display that can play all [digitally rights-protected] content on the host device through HDCP compliance. In addition, MicroVision’s unique in-motion laser display technology is ideal for high intensity, action-packed mobile gaming applications, providing focus-free crisp images that do not suffer from image deterioration or “color break-up” that other pico projectors experience.

Broad Device Compatibility

In addition to being certified for use with Apple iPhone, iPad, iPad 2 and iPod touch, SHOWWX+ HDMI works with tablets including RIM’s BlackBerry Playbook and Windows 7 Tablets, and a range of compatible Android and Symbian smartphones, as well as Windows and Apple notebooks, netbooks and ultra portable HDMI-enabled devices.

It also works with compatible digital cameras, camcorders and other consumer electronics devices, as well as laptops and notebooks through an optional VGA dock. For full information on device compatibility, visit microvision.com/showwx/hdmi.

For a video overview of SHOWWX+ HDMI, please visit microvision.com/showwx/hdmi/gallery.

Availability

SHOWWX+ HDMI is currently available in North America for pre-order on microvision.com and Amazon.com at an MSRP of $369. A full suite of optional accessories, including spare batteries, extended HDMI cables, VGA docks, car chargers and carrying cases are available on the MicroVision online store and from authorized distributors.

Tilebreaker X for the BlackBerry PlayBook

As CrackBerry addicts we're all aware of a little game known as BrickBreaker that comes preinstalled with our devices. Who would have guessed that a modern version of the classic arcade game Breakout would be the cause of so much procrastination and frustration. No matter what, a BlackBerry device just isn't the same without it. So when this game happened to pop up in App World it was a no brainer that I immediately downloaded it.

Tilebreaker X by Marius Heil is a Brickbreaker like game for your Playbook. For all you newbies out there the object of the game is simple. Using only a paddle and a ball you need to break all the tiles to clear them from the board. It sounds easy but half the time its easier said than done especially when you're playing on a larger scale. The only obvious difference between the two is the hidden powerups that descend when you break a tile are not exactly the same (I miss the laser). However, it's still enjoyable.

The great thing about this game is the option to change the controls. You have the choice of using your finger to drag the paddle, your thumbs to move the paddle by tapping on the sides of the screen, and, my personal favorite, using the accelerometer to tilt the device to move. I have to say it is hard to use the last one but touch controls are very responsive and you can adjust the sensitivity. I even played on the train ride home.

Currently there are two versions available. There is a free version with less levels and powerups and the full paid version for $1.99 with all 41 levels of brickbreaker like goodness. I have ro say the graphics are decent and it gets the job done. Not too shabby if you ask me and I've been playing this game in its many incarnations since I was a kid (Anyone remember Alleyway on Gameboy). You'd think I'd be better by now. So why not pick this up today and continue to ignore your work. Don't worry i won't tell your boss.

Scrapbook for BlackBerry PlayBook updated bringing new wallpapers, stickers, and Facebook sharing!

Back in May at the BlackBerry World Conference, Scrapbook was unveiled for the BlackBerry PlayBook. This app was developed by The Astonishing Tribe (TAT) and is a fun way to put your pictures together with clip art and colorful backgrounds for sharing. I like using this app, as does my daughter, but I always wished there were more backgrounds and clip art to choose from.

Today that wish has been granted, as Scrapbook has been updated to v1.1.0.4 bringing with it new backgrounds and stickers, as well as the ability to share directly to Facebook from within the app. I'm more of a Twitter girl myself, so I hope a future update will bring that function as well, though I'm sure we won't see Twitter or email options within the app until these are native features of the PlayBook.

ScrapBook For PlayBook Updated To v1.1.0.4

CrackBerry Asks: How long have you been a BlackBerry user?

I've been a BlackBerry user for around 4 years now. I got into the action when I picked up my 8830WE from Verizon and I'm not sure how I ever got by without it. I had always been a geek when it came to phones, but how I made it without a BlackBerry I'll never know. I picked it up on my own simply because I wanted something powerful that could do more than just make calls and text. I fell in love and have never looked back.

What we want to know is how you, the CrackBerry Nation, got into BlackBerry and how long you've been a BlackBerry user. Was it for work? For fun? Just because? Cast your vote in the poll above and let us know just how long you've been using BlackBerry (pick the option that best fits) and then drop a comment letting us know what got you started.

Breaking Down the Latest “Anonymous” Former RIM Executives Comments

Thumbs-down

The fun continues with more anonymous supposedly former RIM executives speaking out about RIM and its Co-CEO’s courtesy of the latest tech tabloid BoyGenius Report. It seems to be the same story again with and extra helping of hearsay and negative spin attached. The thing is some of it is totally believable while on the other hand it makes you wonder what the big deal is especially since most of the things that the BGR points out are things RIM has already fixed or is improving in the next 6-8 months. While they may be later to market than we would like they definitely have some serious fight left in them. RIM’s CEOs have admitted that they fell behind the curve but they are committed to fixing that. It could be they were a bit pigheaded but their latest QNX work and other signs point to drastically changed times. Harping about the past just seems to be crying over spilt milk. Hearing old executives talk about RIM before they entered this “Transitory period” over to QNX and new hardware doesn’t seem to add much to any conversation.

Let me give you a few examples and take a crack at boiling down this latest stupidity:

Harping about how Mike Lazaridis said that BlackBerrys will never have cameras, marketing names, MP3 Players. Cameras: Check, Marketing names: Check, MP3 Players: Check. So what’s the problem? It didn’t happen fast enough? Now their cameras rival the competition and they have features like Wireless Media Sync which no other competitor has.

Missing social collaborative scene in media circles. BlackBerry now dominates social media marketing. They were just named one of the top social brands.

Browser took so long to improve because RIM was always focused on low data usage.
This is something RIM has already addressed and addressed well.

RIM focused too much on security, battery life, and network performance.
And that is a problem? They just needed to throw more into the mix which they have started doing with upgraded hardware and features like Flash on the PlayBook and the browser starting with Torch.

RIM charges carriers network fees that carriers are always trying to lower.
So did Apple with taking a cut of monthly fees… Does that stop the iPhone from selling?

PlayBook didn’t ship with native email as carriers were expecting.
I agree on this one but once again something that is being addressed. First valid complaint but something you didn’t need a RIM executive to tell you. :)

The BlackBerry is not a cool device anymore.
While that might be true in the US just look at how many celebrities use them. RIM is also trying to up the cool factor with the sexy new 9900. Still I agree but RIM has admitted to working on fixing this.

Mike has bodyguards.
Why do we care? He didn’t have bodyguards last time I saw him in downtown Manhattan. Just look how much Amazons CEO pays for private security.

Jim wanted to buy an NHL team.
Why do we care?

Mike was really pissed when devices leak before launch.
Seriously? Did you see what Apple did when the iPhone prototype leaked?

Do you guys want me to go on? You have to love these insightful “anonymous former executives.”

S4BB Photo Booth Adds BlackBerry Messenger 6 Social Platform Support

screenshot_2

S4BB released Photo Booth a bit ago and I was impressed with the app. It lets you easily take 4 pictures in a row sort of like photo booths at amusement parks. They just updated their app to include a awesome new features that integrates with BlackBerry Messenger 6 and its new Social Platform SDK and API. The app now lets you send the pictures after you are done to a friend on BBM. You just need to make sure they also have the app installed from what I can tell and have BBM 6 installed.

You can pick up Photo Booth in the store at this link for $2.99 on sale from $4.99

Fun up your images with free Photo Filters app

The free app includes Alien, Black & White, Exposure, Gain and others. If you choose to you can purchase an additional 16 filters to max out the app's capabilities. RIM Co-CEOs Have 6 Months To Prove Why They Need Chairman Role

RIM Co-CEOs

According to BusinessWeek RIM’s Co-CEOs have 6 months to prove they need to hold both the Co-CEO and chairman positions. This came to a head a bit before the annual shareholder meeting where NEI brought the vote to the table but then withdrew it with a week to go to the vote. The interesting thing is it seems like RIM’s CEO’s are getting just the amount of time they need to turn things around. All 7 of their new generation smartphones are coming out by the end of the year and early 2012 will show off QNX phones and a much stronger PlayBook.

BlackBerry Torch 2 9810 OS 7.1 Showing Up in App Logs?

log-entry

Now here is an odd one. The developer of the opensource BlackBerry email client LogicMail, Derek Konigsberg, spotted an interesting device in his application stats. He saw somebody using one of the unannounced BlackBerry Torch 2 9810 but this model was running OS 7.1.0.4. With OS 7.0 not out the door yet this makes me wonder what device this is. The IP address seems to be coming from Russia but could it be that there is an OS 7.1 coming too?

Just to give you an idea of what the user agent should look like for the 9900:

Mozilla/5.0 (BlackBerry; U; BlackBerry 9900; en-US) AppleWebKit/534.11+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/7.0.0 Mobile Safari/534.11+

Notice the 7.0.0 instead of the 7.1.0.4 found in the logs. Let us know what your conspiracy theory is!

The RIMPIRE already striking back in the UK

BlackBerry UK

With all the bad press and trolls slating RIM lately, they should take comfort in the fact that recent reports from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech have shown that BlackBerry's market share had increased to 22.3 percent in the UK in the 12 weeks running up to June 12. This put them ahead of Apple's iPhone share of 18.3 percent. However, Android was way ahead with 45.2 percent of the UK smartphone market share.

The report also states that 85 percent of the BlackBerry sales came from people who had previously owned conventional handsets, as well as the majority of them being women. The full-QWERTY-keyboard is obviously a hugely appealing feature for those who like to text a lot but the biggest reason for this increase in market share is its appeal to the younger generation. Mainly because of the low prices at which some BlackBerry devices can be purchased for, especially on Pay As You Go. For the struggling student, buying the BlackBerry Curve 9300 or 8520 is a lot more affordable than paying an arm and leg for the iPhone. Of course, there is also the appeal of BlackBerry Messenger, a topic we have touched on previously.

News like this makes tingle all over knowing that Team BlackBerry can still be in with a chance of rising back to the top. RIM just need to focus and recognise that they have plenty of users outside of the US. There's plenty of support across Europe, what with their 1 million subscribers in three weeks.

Go Team BlackBerry.
