Cooklet - An inspiring culinary organizer for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Cooklet for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Calling all non chefs out there. If you've been nervous about spending time near an oven or get home so late you think you can't whip up a good meal, then you want to check out Cooklet for the BlackBerry PlayBook by Cooklet Sp. It's a great application that links you to food lovers from around the world to exchange recipies or to help improve your skills. There's my favorite, the Quick Pick option, that lets you pick the meal type and prepare time, and voila, it brings up all the recipes they have on file that match.

Cooklet comes with an integrated search feature by food type, a built-in shopping list and an amazing interface that lets you flow through recipes with ease. Being in the kitchen was never my domain, I usually eat sandwiches or boil water after a long day at work, but Cooklet is slowly making me not want to reach for my faithful take out menu.

Features:

Cooklet is available for free at BlackBerry App World and registration is free if you want to upload your culinary concoctions. A WiFi connection is required to view the recipes. So if you're a newbie like me or a cooking whiz this app gives you everything at your fingertips to create the perfect meal.

Review: Allergen Free Cooking for the BlackBerry PlayBook

Allergen Free Cooking

It’s funny, there’s one thing that sticks with me when I think back to the finalists for the BlackBerry Super Fanboy contest. Besides the creativity, I think about the content; applications to be more specific. How fitting that the winners also included developers. We’ve heard about Marco van Hylckama Vlieg’s ever useful Screamager application, which was out and about at DevCon 2011, and also came in handy during our Halloween Trick or Treat trek. There’s another one that was shown off in a fanboy video that isn’t quite as well known, but is definitely awesome. Another Fanboy contest winner, Alexander Perri, could be seen cooking with his PlayBook next to him- check out his My Everlasting Light video at the 3 min, 45 sec mark to see the app in question. That application is actually his own creation; it’s called Allergen Free Cooking.

When his video was posted in the blogs, I immediately reached out to him, wanting to know which app it was. At DevCon, I finally met up with Alexander and we discussed the application, its creation and its future. Since day one, it hasn’t left my BlackBerry PlayBook, though it does cause me to salivate which in turn creates the danger of potentially causing water damage to my tablet. Read on for more.

Allergen Free Cooking was developed by Alexander Perri under AP Photography and by CR6 Technologies. It’s currently only for the BlackBerry PlayBook, though there are plans to bring to OS 7 BlackBerry smartphones. The application is currently in version 1.0 and has a file size of 32.6 MB.

Cost: $1.99

Rating in BlackBerry App World: Not Yet Rated

Allergen Free Cooking Main Menu

In a nutshell, Allergen Free Cooking is a recipe book that caters towards those with intolerances, or allergies towards dairy, egg, gluten or soy by currently providing 19 delicious recipes. According to the about screen, these appear to be provided by stylist and Chef Biance Drennan. There are two ways of accessing the recipes; view all or view by type. You can do either from the main menu, where types are divided into Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Dessert.

Allergen Free Cooking recipe list

Below these categories, the navigation menu can be found, which is stationary no matter which screen you are viewing. In this menu, there is a link to the master list of recipes, as well. In either view, each entry includes a thumbnail of the delectable dish. Let’s take a look at one now.

Allergen Free Cooking recipe card

The design and layout of the application is wonderful, it showcases Alexander’s photographer skills quite well. This includes the look of each “recipe card”. Each recipe card includes items such as a description of the dish, storage options, substitutions, information on specific ingredients, serving size and difficulty. The recipe card also lists the ingredients, measurements and directions. The description, ingredients and direction fields may include more information than it can display. You are able to scroll up and down within those fields. That allows for maximum information and minimum use of the screens real-estate. What’s done with the rest of the screen? How about 4 beautiful images capturing the dish from start to finish? My stomach is growling as I write this while looking at the app. Excuse me while I go get a snack…

Allergen Free Cooking grocery list

Of course you need to keep track of the ingredients needs for these recipes. Conveniently, Allergen Free Cooking has a section where you can manage your grocery list. Rather than one massive list to run through, your items are divided into four categories;

Fruits, Vegetables & Herbs

Spices, Seeds & Grains

Meat, Fish & Milk

Baking, Honey, Syrup & Condiments

The ingredients are preset with no option to modify them in any way. Wait, no you can choose the quantity of each item you want to pick up. Each entry has a quantity tracker to the right, allowing you to easily mark off of many of each you need. To the left of each entry, a check mark is displayed. As you drop items into your shopping cart, click on the checkmarks to track what’s left to pick up. It’s simple, to the point and easy to use while pushing a cart or juggling a basket. The only thing I can think of is combining recipe cards with the grocery list. Include a button that will automatically add the ingredients from a recipe card into the grocery list. Streamlining this process will make the app go far.

Allergen Free Cooking gallery

Otherwise known as the drool den, the gallery displays larger image of all 19 dishes. Scroll through, wipe your mouth and decide which one you want to make next. What you make this section more useful is being able to tap on an image and be redirected to the associated recipe card.

Besides the couple of additions I mentioned earlier, this application is amazing. Each of the features is powerful on their own (photography, layout, recipes and grocery list), but Allergen Free Cooking combines them into one beautiful package. Alexander is looking for more recipes to add to future versions, so if you do decide to pick this up, let him know of your ideas. You can pick up Allergen Free Cooking for $1.99 from BlackBerry App World.

Andy Gryc of QNX Talks Automotive Applications with Paul Sykes of Freescale

Update Process

Since RIM acquired QNX I have been very interested in the QNX CAR Application Platform that they have been pushing to car vendors. You don’t usually hear much about it since these are usually rebranded by auto makers into their own car systems but QNX has been working with Freescale to bring the QNX platform and the Freescale iM.x platform to more cars. Paul from QNX pointed out a great interview on Embedded-Computing where their staff interviewed Andy Gryc, Automotive Product Manager @ QNX, along with Paul Sykes, Marketing Manager @ Freescale’s Driver Information Systems organization, about the implications and challenges of in car systems.

Andy from QNX does make a clear point of mentioning that:

…because the BlackBerry PlayBook is based on the QNX Neutrino OS, developers who create applications for the BlackBerry PlayBook could have a natural migration path between application development on the PlayBook and automotive systems based on QNX Neutrino.

RIM’s Alec Saunders Says BBX “Designed for Dual Core” & Theme Studio Coming in 2012

Screen shot 2011-01-09 at 5.13.32 PM

RIM’s new VP of Developer Relations, Alec Saunders, sat down with Al Sacco @CIO for a quick interview on the future of BlackBerry. Most of it seems to cover the same topics we heard at DevCon but there were a few tidbits that are worth pointing out. Alec continues to stress that BlackBerry OS 7 and current devices will “be in market for some time” but we will “see a natural evolution away from the BlackBerry OS Platform” to BBX. The thing is that Alec told Al that:

Unfortunately, because current BlackBerry OS devices do not have dual-core chips they won’t be able to run the new BBX OS, which is designed to run on devices with dual-core CPUs.

We have heard this line a few times all the way up to Mike Lazaridis but then the Colt demo BBX device that is floating around behind the scenes as a developer unit only has a single core. That makes it sound like current BlackBerry 7 devices are never going to see BBX. On the other hand that sort of makes sense since things like bezel gestures don’t exist on current hardware. Alec also confirmed that BBX phones at launch will support BES and native PIM along with BlackBerry bridge for tablets in case companies want to use that for security reasons.

Alec also covered development and said that it was a really tough decision for RIM to not support the BlackBerry JDE on BBX. According to him RIM “worked really hard to get the JDE environment on BBX” but it didn’t work out. Alec also confirmed that the BlackBerry 7 liquid graphics (read OpenGL) engine stopped RIM from being able to release a Theme Studio dev environment for developers. Supposedly those tools will come in mid-2012 which is a far way off. Al smartly asked how RIM developed the Porsche theme used in the new BlackBerry P’9981 and it turns out that RIM has an internal theme development building tool but it is not shared.

Keep track of your projects with FabuList for the BlackBerry PlayBook

FabuList

FabuList by StandAlone Mobile Applications is a unique to-do list and project management application for the PlayBook that utilizes your entire screen to plan and map out projects or tasks. I'm a very visual person when it comes to organization. I need to see everything in front of me or I wind up forgetting, even when using my BlackBerry. One missed alarm and there goes what I need to get done. I guess I'm old fashioned and it's the reason why organizers and apps have come and gone.

I like to think of FabuList as my own digital flow chart. Rather than having items listed in a specific order there are presented as blocks of data laid out across the PlayBook's screen. This means no having to scroll or sort through multiple items to find the one you want and no drop down menus needed. This is great because it doesn't require a search feature. I can document, chart my progress, color code, and complete my tasks all from my PlayBook. No having to bridge to my device or use an internet connection.

Just tap on the main projects displayed on the left side of the screen and all items for that project fill the space to the right. Each item is color coded: blue for selected tasks, completed is grey, and active tasks are green. FabuList allows you to filter through projects by using the buttons in the upper left of the screen. You can filter within a specific time frame, view overdue items not completed yet or view ones with no specified date.

Features:

FabuList is a pretty good organizer app for the PlayBook. I admit there should be a way to create projects before entering in a task, a way to back up other than Desktop Manager, and the option of more than just three colors. However, it has potential and I hope future updates will bring added functionality. For those of you who like to group projects and see it all laid out in front of you then this is the app for you. FabuList is currently on sale for $4.99 (regular $9.99) and is available from BlackBerry App World

Contest: MetroUI theme by Bbt Designs - An evolution of the BlackBerry OS

Trying to find a theme can be a difficult task. I tend to look for the ones that offer more than just the same wallpaper and icons. So when I saw MetroUI by Bbt Designs I was blown away. Since I've been rocking it on my 9800 a couple of people pulled me aside to take a closer look. MetroUI comes in two versions, one with stock OS 7 icons and one with custom icons and both are absolutely beautiful. It's a fully packed theme that gives you slick, fluid animations on the home and call screens where you can even choose the accent color. Transitions are smooth, it's wallpaper friendly, and functional and stylish all at the same time. Yet another amazing theme in Bbt designs lineup.

For a limited time BBt designs is offering their popular theme Aura for free in BlackBerry App World. They've also reduced the price of their iLike and iLike OS7 themes to $.99 in BlackBerry App World and the CrackBerry store through the weekend. Be sure to check out their complete catalogue of themes at the links below. MetroUI is available for BlackBerry 8330/50i, 8520/30, 8900/10/30, 9300/30, 9100, 95XX, 9630/50/70, 97XX and 9800. Now for the most important part: Bbt designs has 25 copies of MetroUI up for grabs. For a chance to win simply leave a comment on this post. Contest ends this sunday at midnight PST, one entry per person please. *Please remember that due to limitations with Theme Builder, themes are not available for BlackBerry 7 devices at this time.*

BBM Music is available now, but will you keep using it?

BBM Music hit the streets yesterday in the US, Canada and Australia. Many users that didn't get in on the beta have signed up and are checking it out for the first time. So far the reviews are petty mixed -- some love it and some flat out hate it. While I was one of the lucky ones that got a chance to check out BBM Music when it was first released in the Beta Zone, I unfortunately didn't last too long with it. I'm not a big mobile music listener to begin with, so that app didn't really do much for me. It was cool at first, but the novelty quickly wore off for me.

So what we'd like to know is if you will continue to use BBM Music at the $4.99/month premium price tag? I can see how many would use it if it were free, but I'm just not sure it's worth the $4.99/month with so many other music apps out there. So let us know in the poll above, then leave a comment with your thoughts.

RIM Rolling Out BlackBerry Bridge v1.0.7.4 – PlayBook OS Update Coming Soon?

BlackBerry Bridge

We have been getting tips that RIM is starting yet another update rollout for BlackBerry Bridge this time to v1.0.7.4. These updates are almost always followed up with a PlayBook OS update. My guess by the marginal version update this is just a small PlayBook OS update. On the other hand it could be that this just helps with BlackBerry Bridge. I will report back once it is installed and everything is working.

You can find the updated BlackBerry Bridge in App World here. Kudos to N4BB for the screencap!

RIM Offers Downgrade Steps from PlayBook OS 2.0 Beta to v1.0.7

playbook-downgrade-1

This has been floating around for at least a week now in the official RIM forums but now RIM has spelled out. Some users have wanted to downgrade from the PlayBook OS 2.0 beta back to the official v1.0.7. RIM has been kind enough to detail the steps in a blog post on the BlackBerry Help blog. The main thing you need to know is that it can take 24 hours waiting to get back to the previous version.

Check out the full instructions here or below. Personally I am very curious to know why users are downgrading. Is it because of BlackBerry Bridge?

Provided 24 hours have passed since signing up and installing the Developer Beta OS, complete the following steps using BlackBerry® Desktop Software to return to the current non-beta release (v1.0.7) of the BlackBerry PlayBook OS.

Tip: BlackBerry Desktop Software is available for PC and Mac users, and the latest version can be downloaded from the BlackBerry Desktop Software website.

Restoring the BlackBerry PlayBook OS to v1.0.7 will erase everything on the tablet, so make sure that you back up any important documents and files before proceeding. Important: If you backup your PlayBook while it is running the Developer Beta OS, you’ll be unable to restore this backup file to your PlayBook once you’ve loaded OS v1.0.7. This is in reference to running a general back up using the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. What you can back up safely are specific documents, photos, or other files – and then reload them once you’ve restored OS v1.0.7. There are several methods to accomplish this; consider using USB File Sharing, or Wi-Fi® File Sharing to backup important documents, photos, or other files before proceeding with the steps below.

Requirements:

Instructions:

playbook-downgrade-1

playbook-downgrade-2

After clicking one of the above options, your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet should have the current non-beta release of the BlackBerry PlayBook OS installed (v1.0.7). After the OS is restored to v1.0.7, you’ll be presented with the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet Setup Wizard, which will allow you to setup the tablet again. While setting up your tablet again, you can check out the BlackBerry PlayBook category of the Inside BlackBerry Help Blog to learn more about your tablet.

Tether Officially Lowers Price to $29.99

Tether BlackBerry

I have always been a bit apprehensive of Tether for BlackBerry but it does have its uses. They let us know this morning that their “team felt it was time to re-evaluate” their pricing and lower it to $29.99 “after extensive price testing.” At first you may think that $29.99 is not that great of a deal until you consider that for three years they were charging an obscene $49.99. There were multiple times where you could pick up tether in the store for 50% off which would be lower than this price but who knows if they will continue doing that.

Either way you can now find Tether in App World and the store for their new official $29.99 price

PS: Anybody else wonder how apps like Tether get into App World when carriers hate them while RIM rejects other apps on a whim?

BlackBerry PlayBook OS v2.0 Developer Beta updated

The developer beta for the BlackBerry PlayBook v2.0 has been updated. With it brings just a few improvements to help developers in creating their apps. The first is that BlackBerry WebWorks applications can now call the GPS. Secondly, Wi-Fi profiles are now saved and do not disappear after rebooting your PlayBook. After registering to receive the developer beta software, an icon will appear in the status bar on their BlackBerry PlayBook to notify that the update is available. At that point you'll have 24 hours to complete the update of software on your PlayBook. After 24 hours, developers can reregister to receive the Developer Beta of PlayBook OS 2.0 as long as the beta is still open.

If you are already running the developer beta, by now you should see a gear symbol signifying that there is an update available. To update simply tap the top right corner of your screen, select Software Updates, Check for Update and complete.

*Update* - Looks as though RIM decided to put BlackBerry App World back into the build. They've adjusted the information on their blog and it no longer reads that App World will not be loaded. Try reregistering your PIN if you have issues though as suggested in the comments.

BlackBerry Curve 9370 Coming to Verizon This Month? (World Phone CDMA Curve)

BlackBerry Curve 9370 Verizon

A new rebate sheet scored by Engadget shows the BlackBerry Curve 9370 coming to Verizon. We have not heard much about the Curve 9370 which differs from the 9350/9360 models by having 1GB of storage instead of the 9350/9360’s 512MB of storage. The 9370 is also a world phone which is a first for the Curve like packing a Dual-Band: 800/1900 MHz CDMA/EVDO Rev A antenna with a Quad-Band: 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE antenna.

The rebate sheet for this month has it having a $50 rebate but no word on price. I have been using a BlackBerry Curve 9350 on Sprint for the last few days and am really liking the device. Anybody else waiting to get one of these?

Tank Recon 3D now available for BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 and Torch 9810/9850/9860

Tank Recon 3D

Tank Recon 3D first popped up over a year ago for the BlackBerry Storm2 and after a long overdue update is now available for the BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930, Torch 9810 and Torch 9850/9860. This first person tank shooter features real-time 3D graphics that make it one of the most fun games on the platform.

Piloting your new advanced tank, code named Alpha, you will be shooting it out with various units such as tanks, planes, AT guns and more. Fire your main cannon and watch as the enemy explodes into pieces. Use your guided missiles to bring down enemy planes or anything else that needs blowing up!

Tank Recon 3D allows you to choose between Mission and Survival mode. Jump right into the action with Survival mode and see how long you can survive. The longer you last the harder the enemy units become. When you're done, submit your high score to the Internet for bragging rights.

Play Story Mode to go on various missions that will ultimately decide whether you defeat the Evil Hepion forces or explode trying. Playing through the missions takes time and is no easy task but fortunately the game supports saving your progress at any point. If you do manage to complete the missions, try them again but this time choose Hard or even Mental!

I've been rocking Tank Recon 3D on my Bold 9930 for a few days now and I absolutely love it. The touchscreen controls are easy and super responsive and the game features loads of replay value. A new version for the BlackBerry Playbook should be on the way very soon as well. Hit the link below for more info.

Updated: BlackBerry PlayBook OS v2.0.0.3894 Developer Beta Available – App World Removed!

Update: RIM let us know that their note in their blog post this morning that said App World not being included in this version of the PlayBook OS 2.0 developer build ”was a typo that has since been removed.”  Hopefully that means RIM is not even considering it anymore. Now I can finally download the update and check for myself.

Thumbs-down

RIM has rolled out an update to the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 Developer Beta bringing it to v2.0.0.3894. This is not the regular consumer build and to ensure that RIM has taken the DRASTIC measure of removing App World from the developer build in this update. That means you can only sideload applications for testing. The problem is that RIM has essentially turned the developer build from something you could more or less still use regularly and test on to a device that is for development only. There is a reason other OS development builds of upcoming OS releases like Windows, iOS, etc DO NOT DO THIS! It pisses developers off!

Either way if you want to update to this new developer build you will get updates that include two development improvements including:

I really hope RIM reconsiders this mistakenly altruistic idiotic approach of removing App World. Make sure to let them know on the BlackBerry Dev Blog. I for one will not be upgrading but let us know if there is anything new if you do.

Update: RIM let us know that their note in their blog post this morning that said App World not being included in this version of the PlayBook OS 2.0 developer build “was a typo that has since been removed.”  Hopefully that means RIM is not even considering it anymore. Now I can finally download the update and check for myself.

Information Overload

That was quick! We told you earlier today that RIM posted up a new version of the PlayBook OS 2.0 Beta with a huge disclaimer. It specifically said that they had removed App World from the development beta. Now just a few hours later that text has been removed from RIM’s announcement and updaters are reporting that they are getting App World. Specifically RIM’s old blog post said (from Google Cache):

Please note that this build is strictly designed for developers and is NOT a build designed for consumer use, since some apps built for BlackBerry PlayBook OS v.1.0.7 may not work correctly. As such, we have removed the BlackBerry App World™ storefront from this developer build (you can still “side load” your applications for testing). If you’ve downloaded and installed this build by accident, or if you’d like to return your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet to its previous state, check out our guide to downgrading on the Inside BlackBerry Help Blog.

While the updated announcement now reads:

Notice the retraction? Hopefully that means that RIM has realized how big of a colossal screw up it would be to remove App World from development builds. If anything they could simply not allow users of Dev Builds to leave reviews on apps in App World. What do you think?

BlackBerry PlayBook OS v2.0.0.3894 Developer Beta Available – App World Removed!

We posted up a ton of pictures comparing the upcoming BlackBerry Bold 9790 (codename Bellagio) with the BlackBerry Bold 9900 & 9810 earlier today. Brian pointed out in the comments that we forgot to compare it to the previous generation BlackBerry Bold 9700/9780 series devices in terms of size and design. We asked our tipster to accommodate and they gladly sent over a bunch more pictures comparing the two devices. From what we are hearing the Bold 9790 is much thinner than its predecessor.

BlackBerrys Recognized by International Medical Corps for Role in Relief Efforts

IMC Logo

Its been awhile since RIM made a point of mentioning when it was recognized for being essential in emergency or critical situations. They are back at it with the International Medical Corps recognizing BlackBerry and RIM during its 2011 Annual Awards Celebration in Los Angeles next week. They are awarding BlackBerry for its critical role in assisting disaster relief efforts around the world including the earthquake in Haiti and the tsunami in Japan along with other disasters. Here are some of the quotes from the the IMC included in the announcement:

"We are recognizing Research In Motion with the Global Impact Award for the role of BlackBerry smartphones in our operations on the front lines," said Nancy A. Aossey, International Medical Corps President and CEO. "I can tell you that our use of BlackBerry smartphones literally saves lives."

As a first-responder following the earthquake in Haiti, International Medical Corps was on the ground within 22 hours treating patients and coordinating medical personnel, supplies and providing other relief.

"You just don’t know what kind of a setting you’re going to arrive in," said Dr. Neil Joyce, who has worked with International Medical Corps in Angola, Bosnia, and Afghanistan, among many others, and helped lead its Emergency Response Team in Haiti. "As we arrived in Port-au-Prince, the cell phones were not working, but I was able to send messages with my BlackBerry smartphone."

As part of the disaster relief efforts following the earthquake in Haiti and the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Dr. Joyce arrived with a BlackBerry device in hand. He used it to coordinate the setup of mobile medical centers, organize physicians, communicate with the central hospital, and direct material and equipment to where it was needed. On several occasions in Haiti, the team used their BlackBerry smartphones to coordinate with pilots flying in relief supplies, and help direct them to functioning airstrips.

"In doing humanitarian aid, we need to make contact with relevant people who can help, like DART (Disaster Assistance Response Team), the military, the United Nations, the Red Cross, and other agencies, as well as the media," said Dr. Joyce. "BlackBerry puts you in contact with the people on the ground and the people on the outside who can help. We really could not have done aid work in the modern setting without a BlackBerry smartphone. It made a huge difference."

Margaret Aguirre, Director of Global Communications, was on International Medical Corps’ first Emergency Response Team that arrived in Haiti hours after the earthquake, also with a BlackBerry smartphone in hand.

"It is not only the device of choice, but the device of need," said Aguirre. "Doctors and nurses treating patients amid rubble and under trees were able to communicate with each other about patients needing immediate surgery and to coordinate the urgent transport of blood supplies. BlackBerry helps us communicate to get the materials to where they’re needed and to find out where things are in the moment of an emergency."

In Haiti, Aguirre used her BlackBerry handset to take photos and send updates to headquarters, as well as post images and information to Facebook and Twitter.

"Being able to upload pictures to social media was really important," she said. "Our social media posts in the early days enabled military personnel to know the needs of various humanitarian groups on the ground and where to direct assets."

Aguirre says, "It’s my personal lifeline, not just to be able to protect myself but to know I can get help right away if I need it. I can communicate with my family and let them know I’m alright. I did that after the second earthquake hit Haiti to let them know I was ok."

Tons More Pictures of the BlackBerry Bold 9790 (Bellagio)

BlackBerry Bold 9790 Bellagio 27 BlackBerry Bold 9790 Bellagio 28

We have seen a few shots here and there of the upcoming BlackBerry Bold 9790 (codename Bellagio). Now thanks to one of our friends we have THIRTY more pictures of the device in all its glory. That includes its NFC connections and the rest of the device aesthetics including comparisons with other current BlackBerry devices. My favorite is how the keys of the keyboard wrap around the device as you can see in the pics below. Its sort of like RIM pealed off the bezel from the device and changed the buttons to raised buttons. Essentially it is a hybrid between the Bold 9900 and the Bold 9700 with buttons and back from the Torch 9850.
