Play 5 different games of solitaire with SoloDeck for BlackBerry PlayBook

SoloDeck is a collection of solitaire card games for your BlackBerry PlayBook by Chef Delivered Ltd. Included at this time are five games: Freecell, Klondike, Scorpion, Memory, and Gaps. The app has been designed to maximize use of the screen as the play surface. The main screen consists of the layout with the playing cards, and nothing else, just as you might see it on a real table. There is nothing else on the play surface to distract you from the game itself.

Game play is simple and intuitive; you drag a card or cards from one pile to another with your finger. However, if you want to keep track of the game playing time and score, there is an option to place a "score board" on-screen. Using left and right gestures, you can navigate to the Options, Statistics, and Help screens where you can control aspects of the game, view statistics, and link to the developer website for more details and playing guides. You can also get to these screens by swiping down to reveal the app's navigation menu.

Game features include:

The free trial edition of this app is a fully functional counterpart to the paid edition, with one exception: the trial edition closes after each game played, requiring you to restart. If that's not your style, you can grab the paid version for just $.99 in BlackBerry App World.

Shoot some hoops with Slam Dunk Basketball for the BlackBerry PlayBook

There's a new favorite BlackBerry PlayBook game in our house. I discovered Slam Dunk Basketball by VisualDreams yesterday, and haven't stopped playing yet, except when my son stole the PlayBook from me to beat all my best scores. This game is not only a ton of fun, it looks awesome with rich graphics and smooth play.

You've seen games like this before - arcade basketball is nothing new - but Slam Dunk Basketball adds in the excitement of power-ups earned through racking up points by completing tricks and goals. Save up points to unlock new backgrounds, balls, and special powers and get into the Hall of Fame.

FEATURES

You can pick up Slam Dunk Basketball for $2.99 in BlackBerry App World at the link below, and check out a bunch more screenshots after the break.

Friday Photo Fun: WTF is this thing?!

BlackBerry 9980

Wow ... and wow again. Forums member robertyhn sent this into the CrackBerry tip line, and frankly we're not quite sure what to make of it. The site MaxPDA calls this futuristic device a BlackBerry 9980, but it looks to us that it's really just more of a rebuilt (or "reimagined") BlackBerry Bold 9900. At first glance it does look like it could be some type of concept BlackBerry, but as you dive into the photos you'll notice pretty much everything is spot on with the Bold 9900. There are some exceptions in the lock button, volume/mute buttons and memory card slot however, but all of these can easily be tweaked with little effort. All of the ports, camera, flash, proximity senor and other features are all in line with the 9900. It doesn't look to be an actual production device, and most certainly not a QNX device either. So ... take it for what you will, but we're thinking its just the work of a phone geek like us with a little lot of extra time on their hands. Keep reading for a boat load of images. Thanks roberyhn!

NoteSmartly: Create notes with videos, audios & images on your BlackBerry PlayBook

Recently I was introduced to NoteSmartly for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Think to do List & note pad all rolled into one handy little app with some pretty cool extras. With NoteSmartly you have the option to attach pictures, audio/video clips and more. I am so glad I had this app when I recently dropped off my car to be serviced. I made notes of everything needing to be fixed and snapped a couple of pictures to go with them. Sure enough, when I got the car back several items hadn't been fixed correctly (the man super glued the handle back onto my sun roof shade instead of replacing it!). I opened up NoteSmartly and showed the service manager my notes & pictures...needless to say it's all fixed now and I definitely won't be going back to that dealership again. This is definitely an app to have it you create notes on the go. The additional option of attaching pics, video and such are a fantastic idea.

NoteSmartly Features:

Note Smarty also works great for creating multi-task to do lists. You can sort to do lists, set task priorities, mark levels of completion and have different categories.

NoteSmartly is currently available for $3.99 but there is also a NoteSmartly Lite (Free) version available with a few limitations

Box.net Releases Free Cloud Storage BlackBerry PlayBook App

 358766 358770

With SugarSync and DropBox yet to release an official BlackBerry PlayBook app its nice to see that Box.net just put one out. Their app lets you access their cloud storage service to store, send, and access files from your PlayBook. It actually has a pretty slick interface that I hope SugarSync and DropBox are paying attention to. The Box.net app for the PlayBook comes with 50GB free storage for you to kick the tires and includes features like:

  • View your files from anywhere directly on your BlackBerry PlayBook
  • Share files easily with a link
  • Upload files from your device to Box
  • Save content to your tablet for offline access

Keep in mind you need their premium service to sync files from your PC for offline access. You can check out their PlayBook app in App World or learn more about the service at www.box.net.

CrackBerry Asks: Would you use Google+ more if there were a BlackBerry app?

A few weeks back when Google+ popped up, geeks everywhere clamored to get their hands on an invite. The fuss seemed to last quite a while, but recently it looks as if lots of users have given up on Google's social service. I for one haven't been active much (at all really) on Google+, partly because I don't have a sweet app on my BlackBerry to use (there are apps for both Android and iOS already). Granted there is a well designed mobile site, but it's not the best solution for posting and checking feeds. I feel that if there were a BlackBerry app like the Facebook app or the short-lived Myspace app, Google+ would be more of a draw for me.

So our question today is this - would you use Google+ more (or at all) if there were a BlackBerry app? Think push notifications, inbox integration and all that goodness. There is no sign of an app on the BlackBerry front, but maybe down the line something will pop up. Drop your vote in the poll above (pick the answer that fits you best) then leave a comment letting us know if you would use Google+ more or not with a BlackBerry app.

Review: Etymotic Research MC2 Noise-Isolating In-ear Headset and Earphones

IMAG0214

Etymotic Research MC2 Noise-Isolating In-ear Headset and Earphones
Cost: $99 @ Amazon
Rating: ★★★★★★★☆☆☆

Etymotics is well known as the company with a CUSTOM-FIT program for personalized ear molds that provide a perfect fit. They also happen to sell earphones. Their newest release, the MC2 (a universal follow up to their MC3 iPhone version), claims to be the world’s most accurate noise-isolating headset + earphones under $100 for the cost‑conscious consumer.

As far as noise-cancelling, when the earpieces are properly in the ear, you are happily removed from the noise around you. It blocks out most of the sound and allows you to clearly hear your most recent playlist. I have tested these earphones while listening to my latest obsession, Adele, and I have been able to hear her croon to me perfectly clear, well below maximum volume on both my phone and my computer. Using these definitely prevents me from hurting my eardrums on the subway. They are a bit on the pricier side. A non-audiophile like me would normally think twice about spending that much for earphones. Additionally, there is a nifty Send/End Button that, depending on your device, may also mute a call. Always a pro to have an option like that attached to your earphones.

There is much left to be desired when it comes to the fit of these earpieces. Etymotics gives you an array of buds to try to your liking, but I have yet to find one that fits me best. I have not tried their custom fit program. There are two sizes of the 3-flange eartip, or what I refer to as the plunger type buds that seal in very tightly. Etymotics explains you must take out very gently and slowly to break the seal. There are people who may prefer these tips, but it’s something you must get used to. The Foam eartip you must rub between your fingers to compress the foam before inserting into your ear. These fit and block out all noise from the surrounding, but I wish they were shaped a little less boxy and a little more rounded on the edges to fit more comfortably in the ear. The Glider eartip Etymotics states must be pushed in simply to the ear canal. These are the least fitting buds, as they fall out almost immediately, every time.

In short, it’s worth a shot to try the earphones out, especially if you are inclined to try or have used Etymotics Custom-Fit Program. They are a bit on the pricier end, so if you are having trouble with the ear pieces, you may not benefit from the noise isolation. All in all, these are far superior than the typical iPod pain-inducing earphones.
