If you live, travel, or work in an area with shoddy data connectivity you might really appreciate this app. Josep from Neurona Sistemas let us know about their new app called Data Coverage Notifier. It lets you set notifications via sounds, LED, and vibration when your coverage goes up and down. Its not the most sophisticated of apps but its a great way to know if you are back in a coverage area to browse the web or fire up an app that needs data.
I was at the RIM Campus in Waterloo, Ontario earlier this week and got a chance to take a look at the BlackBerry 7 running BlackBerry Bold 9790 (a.k.a Bellagio) and have some hands on time with it. I noticed a couple things about this new BlackBerry such as the move of the USB from the side to the middle of the bottom of the device eliminating the need for docking contacts on the 9790 and saving in its resulting overall size.
As well, I got to talk with the 9790′s Product Manager, Kyle Dorcas, and Marketing Manager, John Yen. They told me how the 9790 is seen by RIM as a companion device to the 9900 for people who liked the form factor of the 9700/9780. From what they told me, the smaller form factor is more of a global market concern than it is in North America where we don’t mind a larger device. As well, the 9790 was designed to be an entry point to the higher-end Bold franchise especially targeting the markets where phones are not given a subsidy by the providers and people buy them outright. In those markets, the Bold 9790 is targeted to be an “aspirational device” because it is, again, the high end line of BlackBerry without the price point of the Bold 9900.
I got a bunch of pictures of the 9790, specifically comparing it to the 9900 and then Kyle Dorcas was kind enough to do a video walkthrough of the Bold 9790 for everyone at home. Check it out below:
I use Web Inspector all the time to work on BerryReview and other projects on my desktop and I was really glad to see it included on the BlackBerry PlayBook. I knew that RIM managed to stick it into BlackBerry 7 and I finally got a chance to use it this weekend. In case you have never heard of Web Inspector before then here is a brief explanation. Web Inspector is a feature in WebKit (usually only desktop clients) which allows you to view and edit the page source, CSS, live DOM hierarchy, script debugging, profiling and much much more. For example, you can see what it would look like if you changed the text color or you can navigate what your script has done to the DOM.
Back to the topic at hand. I needed to debug a JavaScript error on the mobile version of BerryReview along with an issue with our CDN that did not show images or styling sometimes on BlackBerrys. I had tried debugging this issue on my Bold 9930 when it launched but the Web Inspector did not work that well in the early builds.
Now on my BlackBerry Curve 9350 I have to say Web Inspector is the easiest way to debug and test any mobile web apps or websites for BlackBerry. It is essentially like having the Chrome or Safari WebKit based Web Inspector tool for BlackBerry. From what I understand it even works with the BlackBerry 7 simulator so you don’t need a BlackBerry 7 device. There are a few tricks to get it running so read below:
To setup Web Inspector on your BlackBerry 7 device:
Let us know if it works for you! I am amazed how responsive it is and how fast it is. Even when you hover over elements on the DOM it hovers them on the BlackBerry browser. Changes are instant. Great work from the Torch Mobile team on this one!

Simon @IntoMobilescored a quick video showing off the new BlackBerry Tag branded NFC features RIM plans on adding soon. In the video the tag let you tap two devices together and transfer images. That would also let you transfer things like ringtones, documents, and what I really want… to easily transfer contact info. The NFC connection syncs up to create a Bluetooth connection between the devices.
Check it out below and let us know what you think:
We now have a pretty solid rumor on a launch date for the BlackBerry Bold 9790. The device is now official and confirmed by RIM to be launching soon but that could be anywhere in the next month or two especially with AT&T. At least we have confirmation from MobileSyrup with a launch flyer showing the Bold 9790 launching up north on Bell Canada on December 2nd.
Now that you have seen more of the device are you considering picking one up?

Scuebydue pointed out in the forums that EA Games seems to be having a major sale on their PlayBook Games. That includes their heavy hitter titles which is pretty sweet. The prices are right so hopefully they keep them that way!
RIM seems to have push OS 7.0.0.540 through certification at a few carriers. It is now available from multiple Vodafones around the world for both the BlackBerry Torch 9810 and BlackBerry Torch 9860. No word on what is new in this release but the same version on the Bold 9900 runs well.
Warning: This OS will not install on any other BlackBerry besides the one mentioned above. Don’t forget to delete the vendor.xml file located in c:program files>common files>research in motion>apploader to install it on a different carriers device. If you do not know how to upgrade your BlackBerry OS please start by reading this step by step guide.
