Quick Review: Pattern Lock Pro for BlackBerry

Yes it's pattern lock .. but no, not that pattern lock. Pattern Lock Pro is a locking app of the same name (add the pro of course) that simply lets you use a pattern of your choosing to unlock your device. The settings screen is simple, letting you choose your pattern, lock timeout and apps to override. I'm a big fan of pattern locking on touchscreen devices, as it gives a quick one-handed simplicity to things. Pattern Lock Pro comes in handy for just that, however I do wish it was a bit more responsive. It seems to hang a bit as you map out your pattern, but hopefully something that can be fixed down the line. Check out the video above for my review, then head to BlackBerry App World for more.

Millennial Media is working on their State of the Apps report for 2011 and they asked us to help them reach BlackBerry developers. Their survey covers info from the platforms you are developing for to your monetization goals for 2012. Their current survey is running until this coming Sunday (November 6th) and they are looking for more data on BlackBerry development. They share the report results publicly which is nice to see at the end and they also are offering up a $500 prize for those who fill it out.

BlackBerry OS 7.1 Wi-Fi Mobile Hotspot Feature Caught on Camera

Mobile Hotspot OS 7.1 4 Mobile Hotspot OS 7.1

We first saw the Wi-Fi mobile hotspot feature slipping into early betas of BlackBerry OS 6.1 that turned into OS 7.0. Then RIM yanked it out for the 7.0 release versions promising vaguely that it was coming later while not talking about it. Now @bjxiaoc let us know that they scored (Chinese link) pictures of the new Mobile Hotspot feature running on a BlackBerry Torch 9810 with OS 7.1. Hopefully OS 7.1 is still scheduled for release later this year and will be packing this feature and carriers won’t try to charge an arm and a leg for it.
